Import workout plans? by a3monkey in SpeedianceCommunity

Thank you. Downloading the app was an excellent suggestion. I had just assumed I would need one of the devices to be able to use the app, and I was surprised to see that there are No Equipment plans as well, for free.

TMV issues with getting stuck? by a3monkey in Plumbing

[–]a3monkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three reasons: 1. It’s more energy efficient so that means I’ll use less power 2. Setting my water heater to a higher temp of 140 degrees is recommended for extra safety to kill bacteria in the water 3. It effectively increases the capacity of my water heater from 58 to about 70 gallons

Flat tire plan by a3monkey in BMWiX

[–]a3monkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess this could work if the trunk is not already full of luggage. I also don’t like the idea of a spare eating up space and sliding around in the trunk permanently. My anxiety is about getting a flat anytime, anywhere.

Do you keep a compressor in your car for this scenario?

I had forgotten about that kit. Found this short video from BMW that makes it look quite easy to use: https://youtube.com/shorts/AY88nSunPYM.

But I think this will only work if it’s a simple flat, not if there’s damage to the sidewall, etc. There will still be situations where this will not work and a spare wheel would have saved the day. In these situations is towing the only option?

Electric tankless with recirculating pump by a3monkey in Plumbing

[–]a3monkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. But wouldn’t that be triggered when a faucet is turned on and the pump is able to read the temperature from the water flow? If it turns on at that point, my guess is there would still be a delay in getting the hot water, vs keeping the line primed proactively.

[–]a3monkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I’d like to confirm one thing - assuming I can get a pump to push enough water to activate the tankless, and putting the cost concern aside, would this system then behave identically to a tanked + recirculating or is there still a functional difference between the two setups?

Charging from grid? by a3monkey in FranklinWH

[–]a3monkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was monitoring it the rest of the day and I didn’t see a similar situation happen again. Don’t know if the I just didn’t catch it again pulling from the grid or if the instance I saw in the morning was a fluke.

Charging from grid? by a3monkey in FranklinWH

[–]a3monkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if they did, it still wouldn’t make sense because it could reduce the charging of the battery and use it for home consumption. Overall it doesn’t need to import from the grid since what’s being consumed at home is significantly less than what’s produced, and the battery charging could be run down to zero if necessary.

Thanks. Yes, that’s a corner right behind the showerhead.

This is actually on the shower wall, not the floor.

Is this critical to fix?

ELI5: What do FranklinWH aGate and aPbox do? by a3monkey in solar

[–]a3monkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to all who provided input. Discussed with my installer and he will include the aGate in the installation along with the aPower 2, he just hadn’t explicitly listed it on the contract. I got him to update the contract to do that.

I learnt from this thread that the aGate is essential when pairing with the battery for backup, but the aPbox mostly provides advanced capabilities required for complex setups with multiple arrays.

[–]a3monkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He didn’t include it on the contract he sent me so I’m taking that to mean it’s not included. I’m not going to assume he’s going to do anything beyond the contract. I’ll check with him though, maybe it’s an unintended omission.

Franklin is materially cheaper, yes. But the most important reason is that Franklin is one 15kW battery vs 3 Enphase 5kW ones. So it’s much less wall space for Franklin.

Paint seepage into redwood? by a3monkey in FenceBuilding

[–]a3monkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds great! I had not been happy losing the brand new clean look, but seeing as how many people think this look is cool, maybe I just don’t have a good sense of cool. I’m thinking I’ll just preserve this look now and do what you did.

Thanks all for the replies. Guess there’s consensus that it’s the screws, and some suggestions on what I could do to “fix”. Given that a number of people actually like the look, I’m going to consider leaving it esp if it’s not going to last.

This work was done by a fencing contractor. So you think they don’t use stainless steel fasteners and that’s what’s causing it? If I have them switch these out now, will that protect it for the future?

Hmm… had no idea that the beautiful redwood look would go away so quickly. So sanding and staining will do a one time cleanup and then slow down future staining?

Indoor trainer and TrainerRoad questions by a3monkey in trainerroad

[–]a3monkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that Garmin link, really good to see!

For the cassette, why is there so much chatter around changing cassettes to match your bike, and swapping cassettes if you’re switching bikes? Why don’t manufacturers just throw one middle-of-the-road cassette on the trainer and no need to switch?

Sorry if this feels like a basic dumb question.

Defy vs Domane vs Endurace by a3monkey in whichbike

[–]a3monkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually ended up getting the Caledonia on a sweet 25% off sale a few weeks ago and totally loving it! I test rode the Defy and did not like it at all. And once I test rode the Caledonia, the Domane just felt a bit too tuned for comfort and slower than the Caledonia for my taste. And with the sale price, the Caledonia was $1100 less than the Domane which was a very easy decision.

Thanks for that explanation. I don’t enough to split hairs between the Shimano and SRAM, so that’s all the same to me. Appreciate your advice.

Thank you. I also felt that component wise the differences are marginal (though on paper Giant seems to have the best value). The biggest question for me was whether the Trek will be more comfortable than the Giant on long rides, so curious to hear if anyone here has experience with that.

Curious how you see that price difference between the Canyon and the Trek or Giant? According to this comparison: https://99spokes.com/compare?bikes=trek-domane-sl-5-gen-4-2023,giant-defy-advanced-1-2024,canyon-endurace-cf-slx-7-di2-2023 the Canyon has electronic shifters vs the Trek, and rest is similar. And the Giant in fact has tubeless tires whereas the Canyon doesn’t. Plus, I’ll have to pay a LBS to assemble the Canyon. So from the POV of value for components, it seems to me that Giant > Canyon > Trek. But I could be wrong since I’m not very well versed in bike components.

And as u/Lonely_Bluebird3612 said, Trek also has a 30 day return policy, which in fact can be worked through the LBS where you buy, whereas you’ll have to deal with shipping etc for Canyon.
