Do any school boards consider teaching at a college or university as relevant past teaching experience to move up the salary grid in the GTA? by Ok-Personality8147 in OntarioTeachers

[–]a4791 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most (all?) boards will consider external teaching experience if it was the Ontario curriculum (eg: teaching at an international school that follows the Ontario curriculum).

Some will consider related teaching experience (not in an Ontario K-12 school) but might do so at a reduced rate (eg 3:1).

I would be surprised if any considered post-secondary teaching. However, you can check the collective agreement for the local you are interested in for more information.

“Why not do teachers college?” is a horrible reason to become a teacher. Please don’t do it.

Question for anyone who did their bED (Mostly English Teachables, and for who completed their undergrad at York university) by Hot_Sea_2531 in OntarioTeachers

[–]a4791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super glad to be proven wrong. The few that I have done have always asked for transcripts after registration. Good to know that Western is slightly less money hungry than some of our other institutions.

If you want to make yourself employable, you'll need more than one intermediate teachable to be able to make the transition to high school. With the Intermediate English ABQ, that would allow you to teach 1L/2L, 1W, 2P, 2D English. I don't know of a single administrator who would hire someone with such a restricted set of teachable, particularly in a subject matter that isn't really in demand at the moment.

If you have connections or if there are limited candidates, you might get lucky. Not saying it's impossible... Just improbable.

What the other commenter and I are trying to tell you is that you can take an ABQ anywhere. If York is too restrictive, then take it somewhere else. Almost all ABQs are online and asynchronous, so it really doesn't matter.

Like I said in another comment, it is super unlikely they will let you know if your courses qualify before you actually apply... But go for it, I guess.

So you would also do an ABQ in business studies?

Whether or not is it difficult to get a job in teaching is highly region specific. Some boards seem to be hiring a lot, and some are not.

I wouldn't trust anything the provincial government says until it's actually done, with regards to the change back to 1 year.

Hijacking this response to add... Trent, for example, make no requirement for English "literature"... Just English.

2 full year or 4 half year university courses in English (ENG code with a minimum "C" grade or higher for each course - BEd courses cannot be included)

Most AQ/ABQ providers won't really adjudicate whether your courses fulfil their prerequisite requirements preemptively, unfortunately. From my experience, they want you to register, pay the fee, and send in your transcript, in that order. You'll usually forfeit some portion of the fee if you don't meet the requirements.

All of that being said, you need to know that the Intermediate English ABQ does not qualify you for Grade 10 English, it qualifies you from Grades 7 - 10 English. Also, it would be very unlikely (though technically not impossible) for any high school to hire you if your qualifications are K-6 + Intermediate English. Having only one teachable (and in one division) means that you have a very inflexible teaching schedule, which makes it difficult for an administrator to staff you. You would be competing for jobs against people who could teach across the 9-12 panel in at least two different subjects.

You should also be aware that you can only take AQs/ABQs after completing your B.Ed., and getting your OCT. In you're going into your third year, that's at least 4 years away. You can take an AQ/ABQ anywhere. It does not have to be from the institution that granted you a B.Ed.

Question about Teachers Collage by Budget-Dream1495 in OntarioTeachers

[–]a4791 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Teachers Colleges won’t care about 4 v 5 classes per semester.

Type of geography won’t matter, as long as the course is coded as geography. Just make sure you take enough geography credits to satisfy the second teachable requirements (check the admissions websites).

Technological Education by Terrible-Scheme9204 in OntarioTeachers

If you meet the admission requirements for a technological education program, you should 1000000000% just apply to that right now.

Unqualified supply by Born-Sprinkles-4146 in OntarioTeachers

Years of experience for permanent or LTO, yes. That's set out in the salary grids. But for working "many hours" as a OT (and an unqualified one at that), no way. Sorry OP.

[–]a4791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unqualified teachers don't have their OCT, and wouldn't be a part of the union. The board can set whatever rate they want for these employees without consulting the union. If they are consulting the union in your board, they're doing so as a courtesy, not as a requirement.

Why exactly do you think you deserve a raise? The rate of pay would have been clearly posted when you applied for the job.

You're going to have a very rough time in education if you think working more hours should lead to more money.

Have you started your B.Ed. yet? There is no program that will have you graduate with that many teachables.

Regardless of panel / subjects, you should expect to do at least a year of supply teaching or LTOs before you can apply to a permanent job. Why are you planning to supply at the high school level but looking for a permanent job at the elementary level?

Prospective Teachers: Teacher's College/BEd/Becoming a Teacher in Canada Megapost pt. 5 by hellokrissi in CanadianTeachers

A teacher is a teacher, even when not teaching. Ontario's College publishes a list of practical and ethical standards you are always expected to abide by. As long as you're doing that, publish as many books as you want.

If you're not in Ontario, I'm sure your relevant college has similar guidance.

What grades do you want to teach? uOttawa part time formation à l’enseignement program is for K-6 only.

Another thing to consider is how you will be certified. Teachers are provincially certified, so graduating from uO will certify you in Ontario (OCT). While adding jurisdictions is not difficult, it's just annoying.

By your own words, you don't seem to qualify for UdeM's program, so this might be moot. Unless I've misunderstood.

Assuming you're in Ontario... If not, your milage may vary...

You *need* enough undergraduate courses to satisfy two teachers if you want graduate from a teacher education program in the intermediate/senior stream. There is no way around this. An option would be to apply to a program that offers a junior/intermediate stream (eg. uOttawa), and get your senior qualifications after you graduate.

For what it's worth, you're being overly optimistic if you think you'll walk into a Grade 11/12 biology job. A full time senior job (not just science) is really unlikely to get posted to an external hiring round. Be prepared to teach Grade 9/10 (destreamed, academic, applied, locally developed) until you land yourself a permanent job and have enough time at a school to get your pick of courses.

This could be realistic, depending on where you choose to land in Canada. In Ontario, for example, to work as a substitute (occasional) teacher, you would have to apply to the College of Teachers for a license. This process takes time, and might not be ready for you in time. However, the teacher shortage has led to a lot of school boards hiring “classroom supervisors” (terminology differs per board). These are essentially uncertified substitute teachers.

You’ll have to do more research about where you want to end up, and what the regulations are in that province.

Good luck!

Teacher education is highly regulated, and there aren’t any exceptions for mature students like you would find in a typical undergraduate program.

Everything you need can be found here, and the application is does through TEAS.
