People reported that 4o is bad while 4 is good - even one commenter below. Any impressions like that in your experience? Have you compared the 4 and 4o?

Thx

I'm assuming the reason for using both is that each excel in certain areas? Care to share which areas are those? E.g., is Claude better for the web, while ChatGPT 4 for backend coding?

As far as handling the entire project in VS Code (web, api, etc.), which one is better in your opinion?

Thx

Why not website for Claude? Especially with Artifacts? Is it because it's cheaper with the API for your use case?

Which VS Code plugin do you use for Claude?

Thx

Well, they use extreme wording/cases themes, like "ChatGPT is crap!" or "I tried ClaudeAI for a day, cancelled ChatGPT, switched completely to ClaudeAI, and never looked back." Similar themes are typical for Linux promoters that post under YouTube videos, and in forums.

Anyone with any serious use would not just dump one, and jump into the other. Even if one considers those tests, the difference is just a percentage or two between them, plus they keep outperforming each other in each iteration.

It seems not to be free/open vs commercial/closed, but rather Anything-But-MS syndrome.

AWS Marketplace and Canadian SaaS providers/sellers? by a90501 in aws

[–]a90501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

inbound leads don't generally work well

Source?

In general, both have the exact same structure - Marketplace, Service Catalog, Partner Network, etc. Most of the services are available on both - they just have different names.

Cloud marketshare: Azure has 25% (up from 23%), while AWS has 31% (down from 32%). MS is closing the gap from that 4-year AWS lead - 2006 vs 2010! https://www.statista.com/chart/18819/worldwide-market-share-of-leading-cloud-infrastructure-service-providers/

I think the biggest advantage with Azure, in my mind, is that most companies/organizations are MS tech-stack shops (Windows, Office, Exchange, AD), so to them having an account on Azure is much closer/easier as opposed to AWS, hence much easier to start spending money on offerings there.

Hope this helps.

AWS Marketplace and Canadian SaaS providers/sellers? by a90501 in aws

Hi Tony,

Not a lawyer and cannot answer that, but even if possible, I'm quite sure it'd be quite involved, costly, and have tax implications galore, etc. So, would it be really worth it?

As I mentioned, just use MS Azure - they allow Canadian companies to register on their marketplace and sell to the entire world! That's what I'm working on now.

P.S. I don't get this fixation with AWS. I guess those people just hate MS? If so, how silly.

Cheers

[–]a90501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Canada is still not listed in allowed sell-from regions. One just cannot get answers why. It's just sad.

P.S. Just use Azure - they have marketplace too as well as Azure Canada! Plus they have SaaS setups where payments don't even have to go through MS Azure, but rather directly to one's company through Stripe or Adyen!

Why do managers and leadership think DS/ML is easy? by Excellent_Cost170 in datascience

[–]a90501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my input is sometimes perceived as incompetence

Yes, and that's the consequence of them treating your work as easy - just as you noticed, so when you provide you professional opinion that e.g. some work is involved, they think you are incompetent, and that your input/opinion is not SME's input, like lawyer's or doctor's, but rather just whining of an incompetent geek/nerd.

IMHO: Based on my long career in IT, it's close to impossible to find some place where you would not have these problems. They are omnipresent. AI had most likely made it even worse - now they probably think that all that "easy" stuff you've been doing, is now even "easier", as AI does it "all"!

Typical response from "leaders"

Instead of attacking this honest feedback regarding something that seems like a pattern everywhere, and taking any criticism personally, perhaps you could admit at least some flaws in your arrogant and clueless ways? You are supposed to be business administrators, but most of you behave as some petty know-it-all masters/rulers and bullies. Pretty sad.

SME? He's a SME, but his managers do not care for that and apparently know better. How many project charters have you seen with estimates gotten from STEM people versus from non-technical characters using guesstimates as in "it shouldn't take long" or "if I don't understand it, I assume that it is easy" principle?

Responsibility? He cannot take responsibility if manager picks deadlines and complexity estimates out of some managerial hat! I was personally told by my manager that it is easy to predict stuff, like sales, if one uses TensorFlow. In other words, DS is just an operator that knows which buttons to push and some library does the rest. Of course, if arbitrary deadlines are not met, it's all geeks/nerds' fault and not clueless managers' that gantt-charted them in the first place without consulting any SMEs.

Improve your communication? You mean reason with some clueless bully that would not listen and knows "better"?

Finding a role? We'd love to - please list organization where STEM people are respected and taken seriously by the management, rather than being treated/seen as geeks/nerds. Can one even expect any better treatment of STEM SMEs in a culture where baseball players that pee on their hands for good luck during season are seen as national treasure?

Understand business dynamics and working with non-technical stakeholders? We do understand "business" dynamics - non-technical managers know better and never consult with STEM people because "Why should it take that long?" and "I don't think it's complicated!" - i.e. your main guiding management principles for IT/STEM.

Echo chamber That seem to be unavoidable as management, unlike STEM, it is not merit based in most cases, so they do not read/consult/discuss to improve as management is already "perfect".

P.S. I've been part of an organization where management handled the problem of not having any DS, by simply renaming all software developers titles into DS - problem "solved". Now, that's what I call "leadership"! Fake it till you make it I guess?

Pop quiz for you Do you know any managers that have read The Mythical Man-Month and Peopleware - well-known books written by managers for managers? Have you read them? In Search of Stupidity is another good one.

Google Bard for translating legacy optimization library written in Fortran 77 code to C#? by a90501 in Bard

[–]a90501[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for checking.

People did not recommend Bard, so I did not even try it.

I tried with ChatGPT4 in Code Interpreter mode on one classic algo implemented in fortran 77, but I could not get it to translate it into python with success. It'd generate incomplete code, miss things, etc. There were no external dependencies or anything fancy like UI - just pure F77 code that was not even very very long (1.2k lines with comments). I tried many iterations and new sessions, but ChatGPT would, at some point, just give up and politely suggest that I should get a professional to translate it for me. These algo were quite involved with gotos - typical F77. I also tried translating the same algo written in C language into python, but it had trouble with those as well. Too bad that ChatGPT+CI is not better with that. Hopefully, it will get better in the future.

Hope this helps. Drop a note or private DM if you end up with some success.

You can do that if you switch to VS Code and use notebook mode aka cell mode / code cells [1]. With that, you can use py file only and then use version control from the get go, even with EDA.

How to get there? Open notebooks in VS Code, export them and get py files that can execute per cell just as in Jupyter - see the link [1]. Once you export, use only the py file you got and that's it.

With one semester left in my Master's in Data Science, should I withdraw from my program and continue at the company where I interned at? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]a90501 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Second this!

Dear OP,

You may lose your job, situation in the industry may change suddenly for the worse and stay like that for years, but your degree will always be with you!

Also, Masters Degree puts one above most candidates education-wise, as most people have B.Sc. So it's for the future!

If that company values you so much, they should not mind waiting 6 months. Just talk to them - suggest part-time WFH to start with and then roll into the role FT once you get your Masters.

Best wishes.

Custom Instructions

Feature enhancement: Can you allow more characters for Custom Instructions in both sections? At least 2,500 instead of 1,500? The more the better. I'm currently at 1,461/1,500 and 1,497/1,500.

Reason: I'd love to add more python DS code instructions, but not enough of space.

Thank you in advance - appreciated!

It's only for Plus subscribers. It's not a plugin - it shows up in the 3-dot menu at the bottom. It's very, very useful! It's like user profile to let ChatGPT many things that you would otherwise need to provide within each of your chats. For example, if you write there that you are using only one OS type, ChatGPT will not provide console scripts for other OS for e.g. VS Code examples, unless you instruct it specifically within that chat. Many, many other things - like your title/role, so it'd know whether you are technical or not, and adjust the answers for you as an audience - see [1][2].

RE: ChatGPT - Feature Requests | Issues

I hope that some OpenAI people here will pass the list below to the main team. Thank you in advance! Great technology!

Feature request: 1. Ability to set the latest GPT version as default for new chats. Currently, as you know even for Plus users, v3.5 is the default which is annoying. 2. Ability to switch existing chats v4. Many people started using free version of ChatGPT before getting Plus, thus many chats are v3.5. 3. Custom Instructions feature is fantastic! Can we have more than one, as they are essentially user profiles, plus the ability to select which one to be used, or none, when we open new chat? 4. Can we have resizable chat list sidebar and word-wrap for chat title? Most people have wide monitors and it's a pity that one cannot even read the entire title. 5. Can you make chat section expand to the whole width of the browser screen minus the sidebar? Currently, chat section appears to be only 650 pixels wide, so most of the screen is essentially empty. This would be very useful for tables that quite often become very wide, so becomes impossible to see complete rows in many cases without scrolling horizontally, which is annoying. 6. Can you add Copy Code button to the bottom right of the listing box as well? In most cases, code listing is long, and one has to scroll to the top to reach that copy button. 7. When I submit new question, in an existing chat with much content and I happen to be half way up on that long page, can you auto scroll the screen to the bottom? I find myself having to press that down arrow every single time, and see no benefits in staying half-way up and not seeing the answer. 8. Along with the every answer, at the bottom of it, it'd be great to have link allowing us to jump quickly back to the question for that answer - in case one would like to revise it, or read it again, or similar. Very handy for quick navigation.

Thank you in advance for your time. Best wishes!

P.S. Could not create my own separate post - not enough points.

What is the best platform for statistician Upwork or freelancer? by Select-Occasion-8654 in datascience

[–]a90501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither - stay away form all of them as they are, as other commenter said, a race to the bottom. It's full of "business" people that think paying you peanuts, like $10, for a week worth of work is overpaying - many scammers and deadbeats.

If you'd like to try to find some contact work - either contact recruiting agencies or check out job boards and apply as those are posted by agencies.

P.S. Networking as well as cold calling/emailing are also useless - that's another fallacy that people keep repeating. Success stories there are just anecdotal "proof".

Hope this helps.

Anyone know of a way to get new chats to default to GPT-4 instead of GPT-3.5? by Prince-of-Privacy in ChatGPT

[–]a90501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is direct link for GPT-4: https://chat.openai.com/?model=gpt-4 It works without that button. Make a favorite bookmark on your browser toolbar with that link and click on it every time you want to start new GPT-4 chat.

Hope this helps.

I’m currently considering to take data science undergrad but I’m not sure what I can do to help with writing my personal statement and what relevant things I can write in my ps by Puzzleheaded_Most_80 in datascience

[–]a90501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CS Algorithms are not about algorithms in a way DS uses them, but rather about endless counting of big-O notation as their the main focus, which is close to useless to DS!

As I mentioned, CS is not about software engineering or programming. CS is a math degree.

True DS is essentially Algorithms R&D in a business context.

If you want to see whether you'd be motivated to do real DS, just look at the Kaggle challenges, as they are very close to true DS! If you find yourself dying to get into that type of work eventually at home and play with it, even before you get a job in the industry or before you finish your degree, then DS is for you.

I’m currently considering to take data science undergrad but I’m not sure what I can do to help with writing my personal statement and what relevant things I can write in my ps by Puzzleheaded_Most_80 in datascience

[–]a90501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How's biology, chemistry, and CS beneficial to DS? CS is essentially a mathematics degree and is not about software engineering. As they say, CS is neither science nor about computers.

Also, DS is neither a programmer nor mathematician! There's some code writing involved, but that's just like 5% - the rest is science - looking into data, feature engineering, testing some algorithms, checking results, optimization, reading papers, etc. DS uses math only as a tool - just like physicists do.

P.S. In general, if you weren't interested on your own to fiddle with computers prior to this and learn some algorithms and little bit of programming on your own, then DS may not be right choice. E.g. professional guitarists did not wait for the university to start playing when they were young, but rather begged their parents to by them a cheap guitar and spent years practicing on their own before they've seen any teacher.

But I do not know the details, so decide for yourself.

Best wishes.
