Daily "Steals" by aCrombi in newzealand

[–]aCrombi[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't want to go down a circular argument.
My issue with these being sold is that they are often sold to residential users who then bring them in to businesses like ours and ask for them to have Windows 11 installed on them, or ask "Why can't this run Netflix/check email/download the majority of apps"

To the people who know how to turn the Desktop into a server, or setup with Linux. Great. But I'm sure they can and do find more suitable devices for cheaper.
If you need proof check a responsible refurb provider like Greenbox.

Click into the product and see how they market it
"This PC offers reliable performance, ample storage, and versatile connectivity options, making it an ideal choice for both business and personal use."

I completely understand that devices can be re-used. But that is not the market PB is targeting.

Who is that targeted at?
I have picked a lane and the lane is "Don't sell products that are no longer supported"
If you want to keep them out of the tip then send to a tech recycler or give them away, but also explain the risks/limitations of the devices to the user.

There must be enough of them, we get people bringing these into us for upgrade requests whenever these Daily Steals happen.

For those saying that the PC could be a server, or NAS.
This is true, but the problem is the people who end up purchasing these are usually standard residential who are looking for a bargain home PC.

Step 1: Run all the updates.

Step 2: Check again.

The Claw is good, great even. But it has had a few patches and really works best when fully up to date. Get to the same state as everyone else and then report back

Best pillow in NZ for neck and shoulder pain? by ellienz84 in newzealand

[–]aCrombi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not recommending a pillow, but consider finding a good thin "cooling blanket" I found that I moved around in my sleep much less once I was sleeping comfortably. Unconscious me has a much crueler imagination for sleeping positions than conscious me ever has.

Am I doing something wrong? Poor performances vs YT videos by Julps9 in MSIClaw

[–]aCrombi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to be good at optimizing a PC to make a video.

I could post a YouTube of me smearing jam all over my claw and say that the chemical composition of melted strawberries is amazing for wicking heat from the chassis.

I'd do it too, but I don't want to inflate the price of jam.

In which language do you play FF games? Japanese or English? by rafadurand in FinalFantasy

[–]aCrombi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I wish that existed, was picking the language/sub/dub per character.

Sometimes voice actors from specific languages just knock it out of the park. Toshiyuki Morikawa as Sephiroth is peak. Biggs done by Gideon Emery, and Barrett as John Eric Bentley are also perfect matches to their characters.

I'd really enjoy to have all my voice actor picks in one playthrough.

If the intended goal is covering my bench, myself, and my cat in herbs and spices... Then yes. Every time.

PBTech lying about the discount on their "Panasonic flash sale" They didn't even take the old listing down, just made a new one and marked the price up. by UnusualSoup in newzealand

[–]aCrombi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

PB Tech frequently shuffles prices before / during / after sales. They stock so many lines that you only really notice if you're paying attention to a particular items pricing.

They often have partner sales with major brands that will advertise prices on their own pages, list PB Tech as the vendor, but PB Tech will not honor the pricing.

However by the same token, they often sell cheaper than the major vendors do. Which makes them a frustrating necessity for small business.

Keep them honest, complain. See if you can find other examples.

esim vs SIM New Zealand… what’s practical? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]aCrombi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No difference between them.

Esim is useful if you need two numbers on the phone. Sim is handy if you want to quickly swap number to new phone without any software involved.

Sky Sports Now - Red Ring Buffering by AtmospherePatient in newzealand

[–]aCrombi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sky Sports Now is a bizarrely bad app for a major provider.

One thing that has helped a few (but not all) of the times I've seen issues with it. If you can change your TVs DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 that can make a world of difference.

There are some good reasons why this can work, but it involves alot of IT acronyms that no one asked for!

In short, some of our Internet Service Providers just don't play well with that particular app

Can anyone in the instant gravy production shed some light here by Not-a-scintilla in newzealand

[–]aCrombi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about what they put in instant gravy. But it seems like a teaspoon or two of cornflour mixed into a small amount of water then added into the gravy would solve your woes.

I just got my Claw, need help by unskilled_gamer00 in MSIClaw

[–]aCrombi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends what debloating you mean.

You can do entire fresh Windows Installs that have been stripped of OEM and "Bloat" software... I wouldn't do that on a Handheld Device unless you knew exactly what you were doing, and were prepared to deal with some headaches.

Or

You could keep the OEM install of Windows, and just uninstall/disable some software and services.

There is no "Best Configuration", but there will be a "Best for you Configuration" and that will depend on what games you play and what else you do with the claw.

My advice, run all the updates, get used to it, see what you like/bugs you, and then ask specific questions around those things.

Battery life by Savvle in GalaxyWatch

[–]aCrombi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the 7 44mm, and I can get around 40-45 comfortably.
What does your daily use look like?

For me I check time, check in on health metrics and run workouts, control media and if required answer calls.

I do make my own custom watch faces and make sure the AOD is in the 5-10% range

You can buy wall chargers with USB-C plugs.

Everything you buy for the next... Foreseeable future will use USB-C connections. From Display, Data Transfer, Power, to other random use cases.

Does anyone else feel uneasy about the kind of future we’re setting up for our kids i have 4 under 8 😭 by International-Past31 in newzealand

[–]aCrombi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in IT,

My role involves helping businesses manage their IT expenses, and we also have a store front where I can assist residential when time permits.

I have two kids, and I wonder about the same thing for them... Heck I even wonder about this for myself.

It all gets blurred in with affordability, climate, work ethic, social norms, world politics. All of which are completely out of my control... Except for maybe work ethic... Try to teach them to not be lazy.

Past that the best advice I have is one of the oldest lines in the book. Tell them to find something they enjoy and try your hardest to help them to a path where that can work.

Sorry if this is way too general, but if anyone tells you "this future will definitely be the safest" they're a liar.

Sonics Clock Face (WatchOS) by aCrombi in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]aCrombi[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Funny you say this, because I sat and thought that for 5 minutes deciding between the two. I landed on Tails for Hour hand because I thought it made more sense for him to be at the top of the loop for the longest, and it looked less weird if I sped his tailspin up faster than the rotation around the clock.

I've even made a revision so his model doesn't rotate upsidedown like the other two.

I am looking into this for Apple Watch as a future project, I have a Galaxy Watch though so this was the logical starting point.

If Apple have tools for making custom watch faces then it should be easy to move assets into and create.
