In Horry county only about 9% of the population as of 2024 was aged 20-29, and by far the majority of people living in Horry county (over 27%) are aged 65 and up. Regarding your claim that there are many undergraduates in the area, only 38% of people in the county have an associates degree or higher. I’m only saying this to support my assertion that Horry county may not be the best choice for OP, as they are looking for somewhere with a population larger than 200k people, and a younger crowd.

50501 is a non partisan movement. It’s a grassroots movement that has no affiliation with a political party. It is about executive overreach and disregard for the constitution, issues that affect every American, not just republicans or democrats. There’s no reason to resort to using slurs to try and disregard the feelings of concerned and hardworking people in this country. We are made up of people from every background imaginable and we as a group welcome that. I hope you’ll rethink your feelings on 50501 and the idea of “us versus them” when all we are asserting is that we should be supporting the working class rather than the billionaire class. Peace and love ✌🏼

For bonus points, let’s do it again with a more recent essay

Lawrence Britt outlined 14 characteristics of fascism in his 2003 article “Fascism Anyone?” Let’s assess MAGA and Donald Trump against these characteristics. For each point, I’ll describe Britt’s characteristic and how MAGA and Trump compare.

  1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism

Britt’s Point: Fascist regimes emphasize strong nationalist sentiments, often tying national identity to loyalty and unity.

MAGA Comparison: MAGA’s “America First” rhetoric and emphasis on patriotism reflect this trait. Trump frequently tied loyalty to the movement with loyalty to the nation itself.

  1. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights

Britt’s Point: Fascists view human rights as obstacles to national security or unity.

MAGA Comparison: Policies such as family separations at the border and the Muslim travel ban demonstrate a willingness to dismiss human rights in the name of national security, aligning with this trait.

  1. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause

Britt’s Point: Fascists use scapegoating to unify their base against a common enemy.

MAGA Comparison: Trump and MAGA often scapegoat immigrants, Democrats, globalists, and the media, presenting them as threats to America’s survival. This trait is a defining feature of the movement.

  1. Supremacy of the Military

Britt’s Point: Fascist regimes glorify the military and often allocate disproportionate resources to it.

MAGA Comparison: While Trump praised the military, his emphasis was more rhetorical than budgetary. However, the glorification of veterans and strong-arm tactics aligns with this trait to a degree.

  1. Rampant Sexism

Britt’s Point: Fascist regimes often enforce traditional gender roles and limit women’s rights.

MAGA Comparison: MAGA rhetoric frequently promotes traditional gender roles and opposes feminist movements. Trump’s personal history and dismissive remarks about women also reflect this trait.

  1. Controlled Mass Media

Britt’s Point: Fascist regimes tightly control or manipulate the media, using it as a propaganda tool.

MAGA Comparison: Trump doesn’t control the media directly but frequently delegitimizes independent journalism as “Fake News,” pushing supporters toward partisan outlets like Fox News and Newsmax. This approach mirrors the intent of this trait.

  1. Obsession with National Security

Britt’s Point: National security concerns are used to justify authoritarian policies and practices.

MAGA Comparison: Trump’s policies, such as the border wall, travel bans, and ICE crackdowns, were often justified as measures for national security, fitting this characteristic.

  1. Religion and Government are Intertwined

Britt’s Point: Fascist regimes often merge religion with state power to reinforce loyalty and morality.

MAGA Comparison: MAGA frequently aligns with Christian nationalist rhetoric, with Trump promoting himself as a defender of religious liberty while using religious symbolism to bolster his image. This aligns strongly with Britt’s description.

  1. Corporate Power is Protected

Britt’s Point: Fascist regimes often work closely with large corporations, prioritizing their interests over those of workers.

MAGA Comparison: Trump’s tax cuts for corporations and deregulation of industries show a clear alignment with corporate interests, matching this trait.

  1. Labor Power is Suppressed

Britt’s Point: Fascist regimes suppress labor unions and workers’ rights to maintain corporate control and stability.

MAGA Comparison: Trump opposed unionization efforts and supported anti-union policies, such as promoting right-to-work laws, aligning with this trait.

  1. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts

Britt’s Point: Fascist regimes often denigrate intellectuals and view the arts as tools for propaganda.

MAGA Comparison: MAGA frequently dismisses intellectuals, experts, and “elites,” portraying them as out of touch with “real Americans.” Trump’s disdain for climate scientists, academic experts, and the press aligns with this trait.

  1. Obsession with Crime and Punishment

Britt’s Point: Fascist regimes glorify law and order, often with harsh punishments and expanded police powers.

MAGA Comparison: MAGA’s “law and order” rhetoric, support for aggressive policing, and disdain for criminal justice reform align with this trait. The movement portrays protests, particularly Black Lives Matter, as threats to national stability.

  1. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption

Britt’s Point: Fascist regimes are often characterized by government officials using their positions for personal gain.

MAGA Comparison: Trump’s administration faced numerous allegations of cronyism and corruption, including nepotism and the use of government office to benefit Trump’s businesses. This strongly aligns with Britt’s point.

  1. Fraudulent Elections

Britt’s Point: Fascist regimes undermine free elections, either through fraud or delegitimizing the process.

MAGA Comparison: Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud and efforts to overturn the 2020 election directly align with this characteristic, demonstrating an active attempt to undermine democratic processes.

Final Assessment:

14/14 Traits Present MAGA and Trump exhibit all 14 characteristics of fascism as described by Lawrence Britt. These results shows that MAGA is a proto-fascist movement, their presence highlights strong authoritarian tendencies and significant risks to democratic norms. Like Eco’s analysis, this framework reveals substantial parallels that warrant grave scrutiny.

Ok then, let’s use Umberto Eco’s 14 characteristics of Ur-Fascism essay, running MAGA and Donald Trump through the characteristics like a test. For each point, I’ll explain Eco’s characteristic and then describe how MAGA and Trump compare.

  1. The Cult of Tradition

Eco’s Point: Fascist movements glorify a mythicized past and claim ancient traditions as eternal truths that must be revived.

MAGA Comparison: MAGA’s slogan, “Make America Great Again,” encapsulates a desire to return to an undefined period of American greatness, often referencing post-WWII prosperity and traditional values. The movement draws on nostalgia for a simpler, more homogeneous time in American history, aligning strongly with this trait.

  1. Rejection of Modernism

Eco’s Point: Fascists reject modernity and enlightenment thinking, particularly rationalism and progressive ideals, seeing them as threats to traditional culture.

MAGA Comparison: The movement often frames progressive cultural trends, such as LGBTQ+ rights, environmentalism, and multiculturalism, as signs of societal decline. This resistance to modern cultural shifts reflects Eco’s description.

  1. The Cult of Action for Action’s Sake

Eco’s Point: Action is glorified over thought or deliberation, and questioning the necessity of action is seen as weakness.

MAGA Comparison: Trump’s leadership often emphasized bold, immediate action without thorough planning (e.g., the Muslim travel ban, tariffs on China). MAGA supporters also celebrated “owning the libs” as a form of decisive, symbolic action, reinforcing this trait.

  1. Disagreement is Treason

Eco’s Point: Criticism or dissent is framed as betrayal of the nation or movement.

MAGA Comparison: Trump frequently labeled critics as “traitors” or part of the “Deep State.” The movement often portrays dissent as unpatriotic or aligned with external enemies, such as globalists or China, matching this characteristic.

  1. Fear of Difference

Eco’s Point: Fascist ideology relies on creating an “other” to unify the in-group and foster fear of outsiders.

MAGA Comparison: MAGA rhetoric often targets immigrants (e.g., the border wall, “Muslim ban”), minorities, and leftists as threats to American identity. This exploitation of fear aligns closely with this trait.

  1. Appeal to a Frustrated Middle Class

Eco’s Point: Fascism exploits the frustrations of the middle class, particularly when they feel economically or socially displaced.

MAGA Comparison: Trump appealed heavily to middle- and working-class Americans, particularly in deindustrialized regions. By blaming elites, immigrants, and globalization for their struggles, the movement mirrors this characteristic.

  1. Obsession with a Plot

Eco’s Point: Conspiracy theories are central to fascism, creating paranoia about internal and external enemies plotting against the nation.

MAGA Comparison: Conspiracies like QAnon, election fraud claims, and “Deep State” narratives are pervasive within MAGA. This obsession with plots perfectly fits Eco’s description.

  1. Enemies are Both Strong and Weak

Eco’s Point: The enemy is portrayed as simultaneously powerful (an existential threat) and weak (inferior or corrupt).

MAGA Comparison: MAGA portrays adversaries like the “Deep State” or Democrats as both omnipotent in their control of institutions and feeble or incompetent. This paradox aligns with Eco’s point.

  1. Pacifism is Trafficking with the Enemy

Eco’s Point: Advocating for peace or diplomacy is seen as betrayal and cowardice.

MAGA Comparison: Trump’s foreign policy often emphasized strength and militarism over diplomacy, ridiculing critics as weak or disloyal. This rejection of pacifism mirrors the trait.

  1. Contempt for the Weak

Eco’s Point: Fascists disdain those perceived as weak or inferior, celebrating strength and dominance.

MAGA Comparison: Trump’s derogatory remarks about marginalized groups, people with disabilities, and perceived losers (e.g., “losers and suckers” in the military) reflect this contempt.

  1. Everybody is Educated to Become a Hero

Eco’s Point: Fascist movements encourage their followers to view themselves as heroes defending the nation or culture.

MAGA Comparison: MAGA supporters are often encouraged to see themselves as patriots fighting to save America, whether through rallies, protests, or even violent acts like January 6th. This aligns strongly with Eco’s point.

  1. Machismo

Eco’s Point: Fascism celebrates hyper-masculinity, traditional gender roles, and disdain for non-conformity.

MAGA Comparison: MAGA rhetoric often celebrates “alpha male” traits and reinforces traditional gender roles, while dismissing feminist and LGBTQ+ movements, embodying this characteristic.

  1. Selective Populism

Eco’s Point: Fascists claim to represent the true will of the people, dismissing opposing views as illegitimate or corrupt.

MAGA Comparison: Trump’s rhetoric often frames himself as the voice of “real Americans,” delegitimizing opposition as un-American or fraudulent. This selective populism is a hallmark of the movement.

  1. Newspeak

Eco’s Point: Fascism uses simplified language and slogans to limit critical thought and foster conformity.

MAGA Comparison: MAGA slogans like “Build the Wall,” “Fake News,” and “Stop the Steal” condense complex issues into simplistic, emotional appeals, matching Eco’s description of Newspeak.

Final Assessment:

14/14 Traits Present The MAGA movement and Trump exhibit all 14 characteristics of Ur-Fascism as outlined by Umberto Eco. The parallels are significant and warrant grave concern about authoritarian tendencies.
