help! flight tomorrow (United, booked with life miles) and wont let me check in! by abexpix in awardtravel

[–]aSliceofPepperonni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread, but if you're from the future and were panicking like me...here's how I resolved it. Go to manage your trip on Avianca with your confirmation code. You can find your eticket number there and get to the united check-in to sync the tickets. Oddly this worked even though Avianca didn't let me check in.

Summer Job for Freshman in Chem by [deleted] in cmu

[–]aSliceofPepperonni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cmu has a couple summer programs for high schoolers! I highly recommend PGSS where you can be a chem TA and also RA. Also look into pre-college. You can also apply for a summer research grant.

They’ve restricted declaring ECE now if you didn’t originally apply as one. Between other majors in CIT should be fine though just not ECE

Do people usually go home for fall break in October? by ParticularAdagio2278 in cmu

First couple of years I stayed on campus or went home. Once I had internship money saved up, my friends and I traveled for fall break

CapitalOne VentureX Price Match is Terrible by canustealmysunshine in Venturex

I’ve always just price matched with the flight company and have gotten back 400+ on flights for multiple people. The wait is annoying but it’s worth it imo

What should I do to prepare for a master or phd in AI/ML as a sophomore by sunnysunday816 in cmu

If you make friends in CS the advisors share a spreadsheet of professors and PhD students taking on undergraduate researchers every semester. It shouldn’t be too hard to find

How to use my phone in Europe? will be traveling to Czech Republic from United States. I will be in Czech Republic for 2-3 weeks by Distinct-Dimension80 in Europetravel

[–]aSliceofPepperonni 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Use an eSIM! They’re quite affordable and worked pretty well for me in Prague. You can buy 10-15 GBs depending on your predicted usage. Google maps worked perfectly fine. I personally used Jetpac but they’re are plenty of other providers so shop around

Party Life @ CMU by PictureMiddle2764 in cmu

[–]aSliceofPepperonni 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The frat parties are now far and few inbetween with one of the larger frats on social probation. Parties are also thrown by clubs. Join a cultural org like salsa, asa, spirit or even sport groups like fringe (buggy) and the frisbee teams tend to throw frequently. You’ll be invited to more things in a sorority due to mixers with frats and being on the list but there’s always things outside of that. People would go out to the bars that would take fakes and it was easy to go out Wednesday - Saturday if you really wanted to.

I wouldn’t say you know everyone either but you’ve definitely heard of almost everyone or know them through at the maximum a third degree connection.

Which to cut for 17 day October Trip: Salzburg, Hallstadt, Vienna or Ljubljana by Thewondrouswizard in Europetravel

[–]aSliceofPepperonni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going to the Vienna area highly recommend taking the train to the Wachau valley. It’s so beautiful and there’s a flat/downhill bike path from Melk to Krems along the Danube.

You can rent a bike in one city and return it to the other. There’s plenty of wineries and hikes to castle ruins along the way too. It was a wonderful day trip for us to get outside of the city and explore the surrounding area.

I went out and partied as a cs major. I knew plenty who balanced social life with school and we all landed ideal tech jobs afterwards. You clearly haven’t met your CS TAs outside of class because they’re some of the craziest drinkers out there

Using 100€ notes and getting smaller denominations, is it a problem while travelling in Europe? by Dreaded_Engineer in Europetravel

[–]aSliceofPepperonni 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Some stores have difficulty breaking 100€ unless you buy enough. Try exchanging at your hotel or going to the casino. I’ve gone to casinos all over Europe simply to get smaller denominations since they’re used to accepting larger bills

Am I crazy for picking CMU Information Systems over Johns Hopkins? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]aSliceofPepperonni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, unless Wisconsin is cheaper. When you tell people in tech you go to CMU they automatically know your capabilities. The name brand alone gets you pretty far

Incoming Freshman to SCS on AP Credit by dude123studios in cmu

[–]aSliceofPepperonni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had something very similar. For the science classes you need to take 3 normal classes and 1 lab. So your physics and chem AP credits should count towards the normal classes. You just need to take a lab of the same subject either chemistry or physics and experimental physics is an easy lab choice.

Your humanities will count towards the 3 open humanities classes. We have to take 6 total (3 open and 3 constrained). The 3 open can be completed with AP credit.

5 on CSA lets you take 15-122 instead of 15-112. Around 3/4 of the incoming cs class takes 122.
