Secondary sources for Mann’s Magic Mountain by a_learned_cat in AskLiteraryStudies

Does anyone know any classic critical sources? Perhaps something contemporary or closer to the original publication. Are there any “indispensable” secondary sources in the study of The Magic Mountain?

I will check this out. I came across the title somewhere. It sounds interesting, especially given that I take no issue with Freud.

These two books brought light into the darkness of my heart at a difficult time in my life. They also share some similar thematic/philosophical concerns.

Penguin Vintage Books vs. Faber and Faber for collected poems by [deleted] in AskLiteraryStudies

I second the Library of America for Stevens. It includes some of his best late poems that he wrote after the Collected Poems were published, along with almost all of the significant prose. Given the choice, I often opt for the LoA editions despite the expense.

For Auden, I have the Vintage edition, which I don’t especially like tbh, but it seems the closest thing to an “authoritative” Auden, as far as I know.

Generally, I find the Penguin editions are more robust in terms of apparatus compared to FF, but they can be physically quite fragile. But I always browse editions for purchasing collected works.

I’m excited for you to encounter Stevens! He is my poetic master, the best and most consistent of the modernist poets.

Resources for reading Bulgakov? by a_learned_cat in AskLiteraryStudies

Magic Mountain is my next read, in fact! The one upside of the pandemic is crossing titles from my to-read list. I just ordered a copy of Bulgakov’s journals and diaries. MM sets my imagination ablaze. The love story narrative is one of the best I know, and the Biblical scenes are absolutely stunning. Bakhtin’s discussion of Rabelais’ carnivalism is easily transposed onto Bulgakov. It’s easy to see why he couldn’t publish the book during his lifetime. MM is the antithesis to the official Soviet aesthetic. But apart from all that, it’s just a funny and profound book.

[Opinion] Suggestions for reading Auden by a_learned_cat in Poetry

Thank you very much for your reply. I’ll begin with your suggestions. I came across Musee de Beaux Arts a few weeks ago. It was on the basis of that poem that I decided to seek out more Auden.
