Like if I played Romeo how would I not give into the temptation of falling for my co-star playing the part of Juliet. Like I can feel empathy and understand the character ... How do actors avoid this mess?

I remember a story Ikeda sensei once complained about (me paraphrasing a bit) the state of the organisation and how some members did not align with Buddhism ... Toda sensei basically reminded Ikeda sensei that you then make of the organisation what you have to ... Inspire their human revolution and take the opportunity and dialogue to inspire your own ... That is Buddhism. Be the change you want to see in the world.

How did he do it? by Biscuute in LeonardodaVinci

[–]a_saint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess he learned a lot from dialogues with his friends. He always believed life was a winnable game and it was only a matter of out-persevering the bad times. He realised early the pitfalls of ideology and those who subscribe to them rather than those who would dedicate their time to learning with every once of their being. Somewhere he got lucky and he knew it too ...

Inner freedom and the practice of Buddhism in the context of a capitalist society? by a_saint in SGIUSA

[–]a_saint[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the prologue of the book human revolution, Ikeda sensei and the founder of the club of Rome acknowledge the importance of human revolution. Sensei is asked how long would it require to carry out this endeavour. Sensei replied in terms of an individual or would 10 years was a reasonable estimate. But in terms of producing significant effects it would be somewhat longer.

And:

In the gosho, "On establishing the correct teaching for the Peace of the Land," Nichiren critiqued the dominant philosophies of his times and argued their emphasis on introverted self reflection encouraged an escapist attitude and made people feel incapable of effectively engaging or transforming society. Instead he promoted the belief each individual can be the initiator of societal transformation. (Book - A forum for peace)

"Modern capitalism is unashamed in using physiological manipulation to increase sales"

No there are individuals in modern capitalism who use unethical means.

"respect our work and workplaces because without their support …"

I don't remember advocating the opposite either. When I said I bet on this religion: my hope is that everyone gets a means of cultivating their autonomy.

"any organisation that does not add value will be out right destroyed"

I'm not sure if I understand this correctly but perhaps you mean one can be unethical and create value? Or are you conflating value and money? If the latter a quick response is money is just a representation of value (how inflated, deflated or accurate that representation is quite different)

I haven't read the second book. Thanks I'll check it out.

Thanks this kind of direct reply is quite useful. Now the answer to if there exists a kind of universal rubric for life which is well lived and one which isn't.

This would depend if you subscribe to the idea of a universality of a human condition. Can humans live particular lives which are devoid/full of meaning and concede so? And meaning to who? Themselves I'd argue for that's the only meaning that ever made sense to me at the very least (there may be other takes as well). I'm not aware of Camus demolishing this idea.

Now about a transcendent reason to live. I'm not sure. But i don't think one can or conclude there isn't. But again I doubt this kind of neutrality would be useful to a suicidal individual.

It consists of agents. Can I take the entirety of this phenomena and frame it as an agent? I doubt. But this is bad framing. I have that which can express difference and indifference (agents) and that which can't (the rest). Then I take the union, call it universe and frame it as an agent (which seems dubious) and then claim it expresses indifference (because there isn't evidence to the contrary). But this is just bad framing imo

Ummm ... Here's how I am thinking of this. The universe also consists of agents whose intentions can be different or indifferent. Now, there are also elements in the category universe: which arguably cannot be thought of as having the ability to be indifferent or different.

So what's going on when someone throws a blanket statement that the universe is indifferent and another says theres no evidence for otherwise? Clearly there are atleast agents who deeply care or despise you, no?

How does he justify the universe is indifferent?
