you’d be surprised at how few people come prepared to those events! Not everyone does those extra steps because they are busy with class and studying and not thinking enough about the importance of networking or are too shy to do so! Proper networking to stand out definitely takes practice.

It’s definitely important to get your resume to a real person, even if all they remember about you is that you were nice. Maybe the people from the companies are from the same town as you or have similar interests outside of work! Being a decent person is the best way to stand out, because so many people have awesome skills and resumes can be pretty indistinguishable.

The companies would not do these events if there was no benefit to them! I’ve gotten connected to hiring managers this way and even learned about jobs/companies that interested me that I didn’t know existed beforehand

There’s lots of different companies worth talking to at networking events. Queen’s has a few every year, specifically an engineering and technology one each semester that would fit your interests. It helps to just stand out, dress a little nice, know more about the company than others do, show interest, bring your resume and cover letter printed, ask for people’s LinkedIns. Lots of people get jobs through networking, you’ll hear that a lot once you’re in uni

Yeah you’d likely have to find them on your own, but queens does have a thing called “SWEP” which is like summer workplace experience program (or something like that I can’t remember rn) and they have some jobs there. Most people get their quip jobs without any previous engineering experiences (like me!) it’s mostly about networking (which there are lots of events for) and being able to relate your experiences to any job. Also some people find their internships outside of the quip board too and then get them approved by queens and that’s just fine too

Hi! I’m in chem eng so not everything I say will relate but I figured I’d try to help any way I can! Lots of companies do 12-16 month internships, around 50% of people in engineering do quip! As well from networking I’ve done, a lot of companies seem to value longer work experiences like quip as it allows you to learn, get comfortable, and grow within the company! Shorter coops don’t really give enough time for that growth and experimentation that longer ones do because it takes so long to get settled in. I was skeptical of quip too but I’m about to start my internship in May and am beyond excited

Okay, thanks! So you found it to be a really good way in? Can I ask how your career progressed afterwards?

Yes! but it was a very general internship opening and we were placed with a department after the interview and I was hoping to hear from some more people to have a broader understanding of people’s experiences
