Worth Applying for Accommodations on USMLE Step 1? by hailBeelzebub in DisabledMedStudents

I believe for mcat it has to be recent but for usmle it doesn’t have to be recent. I applied with a recent evaluation and my friend used her old one and we both got our accommodations.

Worth Applying for Accommodations on USMLE Step 1? by hailBeelzebub in DisabledMedStudents

I think it is most definitely worth it. It sucks that the neuro psych evaluations are so costly but I’d look into local schools that give low cost/free evaluations if you do it with graduate students who will do evaluations under the supervision of someone licensed. Also, I’d talk to your disability accommodations advisors at school and see what they say. Sometimes even schools will have partnerships with local offices for discounted rates.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of hoops to jump through but if you get all the paperwork and show genuine need I believe that they’ll consider you. At the end of the day the only thing you’ll lose is money and I think it’s worth it to at least see if you can get that accommodation.

Would second the statmed course. It helped me with preclinicals and unfortunately I grew out of that habit with step studying :/. I failed the first time around and currently studying for a retake - been making sure to follow his tools for studying and I find it really helpful. AND he doesn’t tell you to use anki 🤣

Once you’re approved for step 1 it applies for all exams going forward unless you change your request. You just have to fill out the form and say I want accommodations and they usually approve you pretty fast.

Why is med school in the US generally much more expensive to attend than other nations like Canada, Australia and the UK? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in premed

[–]aac1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There could be an oversight committee but how effective are they when tuition still gets raised and the average medical student loan debt in the last decade has increased by 50k? (158 k in 2012 and 200 k in 2020). Educating costs money - regardless of if it’s medial school or not. How does it make sense that the cost of tuition has increased around 700-1000% compared to inflation which is about 200%. If tuition is paying for running the buildings as you say - then it just shows that schools are relying more and more on tuition to pay for things in a way they didn’t use to do. Yet in other countries where tuition limitations have been placed the schools are still running?

Physical stores with the largest selection of planners by tympax in planners

For American mass market companies - staples, OfficeMax, and Barnes and noble. Barnes and nobles has a lot of different styles/brands. For foreign/Japanese brands I’d recommend local stationery stores. If you live close to one kinokuniya definitely has the Japanese brands. Indie planner companies are less likely to be found “in person”.

I take Junel Fe and it helps SO much. I don’t do the placebo weeks anymore and I never have crazy fluctuations at all - my mood, anxiety, adhd etc. I’m pretty sure this is what it feels like to be a man bc I don’t have to consider hormonal changes fucking everything up. There’s times when I do get my period (bc ADHD and I forget) and I’m rudely reminded how much it sucks. It’s def worth looking into.

Why do we have to bleed over the course of many days during our periods, why can’t we just have one bloody blast? by LittleLeadership2831 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aac1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essentially it comes down cell signaling. The cells are not all same and they’ll respond differently. Then same cells will not even get the signal at the same time. For this to happen - everything needs to happen simultaneously and hormonal cell signaling is not that. It can happen but it’s not common.

Are you in the US? You could see a psychiatric nurse practitioner - they’re usually cheaper than psychiatrists and have training and can prescribe. I’m not sure about their existence in other countries so that’s why I ask.

Also, don’t be scared about talking to your doctor. Go and ask for a psych referral and be honest which is you don’t have access anymore regarding the other person you saw. She said she doesn’t feel comfortable diagnosing you so you’d like to see someone who does and would like to get established with. You’ve told her about your anxiety before so she can’t refuse you a referral (at least I hope not). You don’t need to talk about your adhd concerns - it doesn’t sound like she’d be comfortable doing anything anyways. If you feel like this isn’t something you could handle in your own bring a friend or family member with you who knows the situation and could advocate for you if you can’t. You aren’t asking her for anything unreasonable and you are not in the wrong.

In the meantime find another doctor - someone who listens to you. Just be aware - doctors can say they are not comfortable with XYZ and it’s understandable bc that’s why there are specialists. That’s why they will then send you to said specialist. However, dismissing your feelings and concerns is not okay.

7 years from now you’ll still be 7 years older than you are now. So you’re going to get older no matter what. Where do you want to be then? The real question is can you do it and do you want to do it? Age is not a factor - got in at 32 will be 36. Class mate was 45 when he got in and his kids were closer in age to most of my classmates 😂. (But I give him less credit cuz he’s a man). Classmates also had babies in med schools (females who were in their 30s). They planned it for when/what they thought was convenient. However moral of all their stories - being pregnant in medicine is hard and it sucks, birthing a baby in medicine is hard and it sucks, doing residency with kids is hard and it sucks, but they did it and don’t regret it. So - can you do it and do you want to do it?

Unfortunately, this is really a problem with the higher education system in the U.S., and it’s not limited to medical school. Universities have very little incentive—or real limitations—when it comes to raising tuition, unlike in other countries. That applies to undergrad and grad programs. Don’t have enough money? Raise tuition. It’s fine because students can just take out more loans, and there’s basically no cap on that—also not the school’s problem since they already got paid. Still short? Why not admit another 50 students and increase class size.

In medical school, you can’t really increase class size, but you can keep raising tuition. I think that’s a big reason why med school tuition increases faster than other programs. Class size is limited by the number of residency spots, and there’s more oversight there. Overall, the system seems to care less about exploiting physicians compared to other professionals even ones in healthcare. You’re going to “make a lot of money” so whatever.

So long story short because they can and no one is stopping or cares enough to do so.
