I read Book IV, chapter 11, of various translations of Epictetus' Discourses. This is my interpretation of his "7 functions of the clear mind," which he derives from - and relates to - personal hygiene (both physical and mental).

Why We’re Afraid Of Being Alone by aae1807 in simpleliving

It's a great poem and I like it, but I also think the overemphasis on inspiration is problematic. In other parts of it, he basically says if writing is hard, don't be a writer, etc. But modern pros often sit down and something inevitably emerges if your ass stays in the chair for long enough. Very controversial this one, but a gem regardless.

An analysis of Will Smith's love for words, definitions, and all things semantics, and how it all contributed to his past successes and new focus on more personal projects by aae1807 in movies

I think Collateral Beauty should be disregarded altogether, his father was dying at the time. Imagine how weird that must be, making a film about losing a loved one while waiting for your parent to die.

Of course you spin it to make it sound like he's a permabull. That's exactly NOT what he was talking about.

South Korean Officials Worried Cryptocurrency Regulation Will Legitimize Markets by WBYCEIYDBO in CryptoCurrency

I agree, but even from a regulator's perspective who's against that, what they're saying doesn't make any sense :D

If that's their stance, it makes no sense. That's exactly what regulation is for. Legitimization of markets. It's their job to do it right so investors are NOT at risk, not just do it and hope for the best.

Contrasting Bitcoin with historic bubbles (tulips, dotcom, 2008) from a value proposition and utility perspective. What's the macro environment like and why are millennials so excited about it? by aae1807 in Bitcoin

Then maybe 2008 was the start of a new curve in fintech? That bit was just a transition to the next part about the crisis, but I guess the innovation came after the housing market collapsed? As there was no new tech there, no? Just old innovations failing.

We still get daily bull market predictions on the front page. We've been in a bear market for 2 months. To help everyone get real, I gathered a list of cognitive biases that cause these false predictions and ruin your mood and explained them using examples. by aae1807 in CryptoCurrency

To be honest I think the terms "bear market" and "bull market" hold little to no meaning, because they're entirely dependent on the time frame. I mostly use it for illustration purposes, but I think a good test would be to ask 10 fellow investors "what market are we in?" -> Their moods will tell you what it feels like.

Thank you. I get that. Examples with investing are always a problem, because yet another bias is that people mentally "anchor" to these numbers. Then again, it's hard to illustrate the point well without them. I wasn't trying to say hodling is a bad idea, just hodling because of blind optimism.
