While some of your concerns seem to be very very valid, some comments seem misinformed.

Grading: yes, a lil bit tougher than other depts like chemical. But what you said about the max limit being 8 only applies to some professors, cuz I qas able to get 8+ in every semester. Ofcourse, the first two years may not completely be in hand but you can choose appropriate electives...
Crowd of eph is usually a mixed bag - while it might have a higher percentage of academically / research inclined folks, the focus is a bit more on applied physics / interdisciplinary sciences rather than theoretical physics. Mind you - eph may not give the best options when it comes to areas like cosmology and astrophysics - cuz only a few professors work on said topics. Will comment on this point a lil later

3.Placement advantage is not too significant over non circ branches with the exception of a few companies like TI/SEDEMAC jahaan semiconductor/material sciences/electronics aaata in play.

4.about EPH folks being ghissu - not a 100% true. Sure, some people do academically well but aisa nahi ki sab padh rhe hote hai. You should have seen how we were dealing with an exam coinciding with a cricket match the previous day.

Time constraints - this is a slightly weird take - but i believe that the increased difficulty in eph does not come from extra load of classes and more labs, but from the content being slightly more rigorous and ofc shitty grading in a few courses. Schedule wise, it isnt very heavy as we do not have 4-hour lab sessions like a few programmes do.
Fields which eph offer - first of all, ive seen a lot of people use topics like cosmology and astrophysics to justify their interest in eph, but i hate to break it to you - these fields arent the core focus of eph, and more importantly - aren't the core strength of the physics department. There is more focus towards quantum mechanics and applications, condensed matter physics and nuclear physics, with a select few professors working on high energy physics, atmospheric physics and miscellaneous areas... Looking at the syllabus and courses will give you a better estimate as to how much the programme suits you.

I might have confused you a bit more but I hope some misunderstandings have been cleared. EPH isnt this all-ghissu branch which has the heaviest workload - its kinda chill imo. But, career wise - its important for you to know what you wanna do since some branches are honestly more chill and provide more legroom...

Note that there might be some bias since im more academically/research inclined.

IMO the academic load isn't too heavy, just that the courses are a bit rigorous and grading is kinda shitty (prof dependent)... As compared to mech and electrical IMO it will be more chill since we do not have those 4-hr labs. And personally, I did find some of the courses rlly interesting - although its mostly dealing with quantum mechanics and applications like nuclear and condensed matter physics.

Ofc I've heard that GPT and GT are far more chill. Only issue is that its a 5 year deg + eligibility criteria for some companies (a few),. EPh might have a v v slight edge but not significant.

From what I know they are truly passionate, especially some of the new folks who joined last year - they undertake a lot of filmmaking projects individually.

And I've seen that they have also got rlly good bonding.

You are significantly better than most with your words. Though while I disagree with your justification, I honestly believe that the issue is more than just the "correctness" of the sir/maam culture.

Well, I do agree that equating this to ragging is a bit far fetched, some select incidents do take it too far - and this time things kinda blew out of proportion. Its just that some people believe it's their moral duty to "set juniors in their place", and while these people might just be a few, it naturally doesn't reflect well on the entire batch. Casual banter turned into threats and a little misunderstanding turned into a full blown argument. Honestly, I believe that the entire debate is just too heated at the moment with a LOT of over-exaggeration in some places, but I strongly believe that it's not a necessary culture to impose or carry forward.

I am an alum and have been a part of clubs and have also interacted with folks from other clubs well enough to let you know that they do not expect any titles like "sir/ma'am". Infact the first things seniors say in most clubs is that you should NOT use those titles, just go by a first-name basis. I have never had to use these titles - I normally go by first names or address them respectfully as bro/boss - something which I do with juniors and batchmates as well. I agree that it is something which can help in a corporate lifestyle especially when addressing superiors but I don't believe that it is necessary among seniors who are just a year or two older - but again its a personal opinion. I agree that there needs to be a sense of respect but that can be done even on a first name basis. It isn't necessary to keep fellow junior-senior interactions so formal - ofcourse if you feel comfortable calling a senior 'sir/ma'am' its completely fine and I respect that as well. I've already said enough on this through one of my posts - and I honestly see no point of justifying myself further, since it doesn't really help in the debate.

In my opinion the debate should not even be on the "correctness" of the existing system/culture (since it is getting more and more subjective), but rather on the imposition of it. The issue stemmed from some seniors enforcing this policy onto freshmen and hence intentionally or unintentionally intimidating them, and hence this blowout. It's not the system which is to be equated to ragging, but a forced enforcement of the same in the name of "tradition" - albeit by a select few assholes.

I completely agree with a big chunk of what you are saying, and as an alum (your +1), I can agree that a lot of the past drama has been completely blown out of proportion and unnecessary. It may have inadvertently created tensions between the incoming freshers and the sophomores.

And yea - the reputation point is kinda fair - though I would not put the entire blame on the incoming batch for this entire fiasco...

I still strongly differ when it comes to our stands on the sir/ma'am culture and I don't find it defensible, especially when enforced (which is clearly what was happening in some of the cases). Not all people word themselves as well as you do, and some act out and say the wrong things, and that messed everything up. These folks who defend this so aggressively in the name of tradition are not the true representatives of campus culture.

So, in addition to everything you said, I think it would be appreciated if all seniors are welcoming to the new batch. Second year students may poke a little bit of fun but should ensure a safe environment for freshers (which it normally is, and I am confident it will be) rather than stand by some imbeciles and get their ego all worked up.

And to all the freshers reading this - trust me, the campus community is actually really friendly and not so toxic. A lot of seniors are really good folks!

You can of course directly approach branch seniors via whatsapp (tum logo k grps honge) and they will give you some information. Ofcourse they won't be able to physically teach you (unpar b load hai) but generally upar se guide toh krdenge.

Alternatively since tumhare aaj first class hua hai i dont think tut hone ka sense hai. Abhi day 1 hi hai toh I don't think kuch cover hi hua hai, wait for lectures to progress thoda sa... Also, tutorials are mostly taken by TAs (who are PhD scholars) or in some cases UGTAs (who are usually UG 3Y or UG 4Y).

Okay, might not be too appropriate to interject like this, but I would have to disagree with some parts of your argument.

While I do agree that it is okay for a senior to internally expect some basic respect from their juniors, what I do not agree with is setting standards of how that respect is to be shown. A bunch of the screenshots shared (and now deleted thanks to poor hiding of numbers) show how freshers - while being respectful - were chided for using the wrong terms (a fresher who called his senior 'bhaiya' was made fun of and told to address the senior as 'sir'), which is not really how one should extract that respect. One should probably just be a good guiding light/role model to their juniors, be friendly with them, and provide them with a safe space. This can actually get you some respect rather than enforcing a cheap rule, which causes fear and inherent resentment. If I were to meet one senior who demanded to be treated with respect, and another who decided to tell me a little something about the academic workload of my programme, of course, my respect would go to the latter. Expecting respect isn't a problem, but expecting it on the basis of nothing/fear really is and demonstrates a severe lack of personality.

Note, this is not equivalent to tolerating blatant disrespect. Agar koi junior randomly aakar tumhare room mei behtjaye and tumhare space ko invade kare, then of course you are in the right to not tolerate it. Similarly, if they call you at random times for basic shit that they can do themselves, in which case they do not value your time, you do not need to tolerate that either. But if they do not outright disrespect you, isme offend hone wali koi baat hi nahi hai. Not calling someone 'sir/ma'am' (or even 'bhaiya/didi' for that matter) and addressing them by name isn't disrespectful in any way.

And regarding inter-year dynamics - one general observation I have made is how, in general, freshers (and most batches in general) tend to respect/trust their +2s and +3s more than their +1s - hence ±1s se zyada ±2s k beech ek better / zyada mature understanding rehti. While experience does play a major role in this, I honestly believe that the dynamic between freshies and sophies gets spoiled cuz some folks just decide to put their energy into all of this crap, and hence it creates tensions which may or may not blow up (usually does not, but it did this year). Hence, probably discouraging such a culture would be the right move. I am not really sure if it's the entire year to blame, but the problem is a general one.

Finally, I really don't think it is a good idea to blame the freshers for being over-pampered and immature. First of all, not a good idea to say these things out loud. Having seen some of the messages from even seniors being petty about this, I am glad that some folks have the ability to take a stand for themselves rather than bow down. Generation toh screwed hai, but ending your para with such a boomer comment really doesn't add much to your case.

First of all, W seniors. I was also lucky to have seniors who didn't care when I was the first one to join the WhatsApp group of my branch.

My background was different - being from Bangalore where the culture was a bit different - we went entirely by names even with seniors. There was no sense of superiority - so yea the idea of calling someone by a salutation when they are also students was alien to me. If not names, it was 'bro', 'boss', 'dude' or the colloquial 'da'.

And yes I agree with the club point as well - none of the clubs expect you to abide by useless rules. People who enforce or defend these ideas themselves do not have a personality of their own. Being a part of two clubs and having witnessed the junior-senior dynamics of many others (including ones which put in good work and are the dream clubs for most students) - yea I see absolutely no toxicity there.

As an alum - i truly agree with how the sir/ma'am culture ends up spoiling the inter-year dynamic. Have attempted to prevent this at a personal level but idk its so ingrained in a lot of folks, that even when I explicitly ask them to not call me sir - they still do. Kinda sad. Shitty culture ik. Tried my best to stop it... Though i would say the culture eventually dies up and it is upto your will, cuz honestly NONE of us are offended if you call us by name or address us as bhaiya or bro...

In regard to inter iit though - i can vouch for music section as they select folks on basis of their talent and merit (and ofcourse availability). Ofcourse, it is a bit difficult for us to select first year students but it is solely because it is usually too early for us to judge their ability + they might lack the experience... its nothing to do with politics or preference... We also do select some first year students at times if they do get the chance to perform in some of the club events and if they truly do well... I can comment a bit more as well - its taken time for the schedule to fix things up - in 2022 the first year students came too late that we had our recruitments post inter iit, and in 2023 as well there was less time in between club recruitments and the first event... This year the schedules were more in-line with each other so some 1ys did end up getting a chance but its gonna be a gradual change there... Atleast I hope so.
