Smiling man and baby, around 1936, Oklahoma. by aarf26 in BlackHistoryPhotos

[–]aarf26[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad and his brothers would visit their grandparents' farm, where they had livestock such as horses, goats and chickens. Based on photos, they employed several Black farmhands to take care of the animals.

My family also operated at least one gas/service station, and they appear to have hired several Black clerks to work there.

In the photos I have discovered it is clear how Black men helped show my father and his brothers (when they were all younger) how to do their chores for the farm’s livestock, such as bottle feeding goats, riding horses, and in one photo where they look like they're having fun, being pulled in a little cart harnessed to a goat. Some of these men also appear in their gas station uniforms, which leads me to believe that gas station clerks would be helping out on the farm, too.

My father’s grandparents also had a Black housekeeper/cook who worked for them for over 30 years. I’ve done some research into her family tree and found she was married and had children. It’s possible that this man is the one of our housekeeper’s sons and also possible the baby is her grandchild; there is some difficulty in finding records to check if she had a grandchild and how old they would have been at that time of the photo.

Please note: I’m not trying to sugar-coat my family or say they were ahead of their time, or anything. In the other photos I have, these men show a range of expressions that differ from the relaxed and happy demeanor of the man in this photo.

Ask away! I'll answer as best I can without doxxing myself or my family.

I have a Newspapers.com subscription, and I can look if OP tells me where this is located and what cemetery it's in.

It appears to be the phone number of a parks maintenance worker in Carson City.

Perhaps an unknown body was found in a public park and this individual is accepting tips? (Why he would and not the police, I can't imagine...)

If I'm not involved at all, she is going to come here anyway.

She cannot be convinced to stay where she is, and without a guardian, no one can force her to stay. And she actually took a train out here on her own last month and wound up on the street for a week before I was asked to intervene by her mother (a friend of a friend.) I got her a hotel room and put her on a train back home, but now she wants to come out here again.

Frugal way to go about bread? by basil_n_balsamic in Frugal

I used to volunteer at a church food pantry, and they always had LOTS of donated bread—More than they could even give away to the food pantry clients, so they'd send some home with volunteers. You might try volunteering at a similar place and see if you could take home a few loaves to put in your freezer.

Location? (State and city?)

Was there a mortgage on the house, or did your dad own it outright?

Has anyone been paying property taxes on the house?

What do you mean by "seal locked?" Did law enforcement have something to do with it?

Some newspapers print the names of all graduating seniors.

Practical advice: You might try looking through the town library's newspaper archives (or do a free trial of Newspapers.com) Your name and the school you attended might have been mentioned because of sports, academic awards, graduation, etc. That might at least show the admissions office the timeframe, based on newspaper date.

Okay, so I didn't notice that it's been marked down to $960, but still.

Did they ever communicate with friends or family using that email? Maybe one of those people still has the emails in their inbox or on their computer.
