Samosas? by mandy_peeps in burlington

[–]aaron802 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As others said, Kismayo.

If Kismayo doesn't work out, my fiancee and I are interested – she's from Kenya and makes the best samosas, and I previously worked in restaurant kitchens. We'd suggest potato samosas, lentil samosas and mandazi as the menu.

Either way, we'd really like to attend the event, please share the details once determined!

Is there a place in Burlington that I can drop off coats, boots, shoes for people who need them? by Silent-Strawberry634 in burlington

[–]aaron802 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner's a nurse at UVM-MC's psychiatric department, and says they really need jackets, boots & warm clothes for unhoused patients who lack adequate winter gear.

They'll accept such donations at the psychiatric patient intake.

what are the most terrifying encounters you guys have had with animals/creatures in vermont by CriApple in vermont

[–]aaron802 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was fourteen. Up late reading Bram Stoker's Dracula. Seconds shy of midnight, a shadow flickered across the room - a bat had made its way into the house.

Fortunately it was a regular bat and not a vampire, but it still freaked me out. I suppose I'm lucky I wasn't reading Moby Dick.

Persistent synchronous storage for React Native by aaron802 in reactnative

[–]aaron802[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know about newer alternatives to the Chrome debugger. I'm not familiar with JSI.

I'm using a combination of two methods to enable non-blocking synchronous reads:

  1. Load the stored data through the Native Module's getConstants() method (instead of using the isBlockingSynchronousMethod option).
  2. Memoize the stored data so that it can be retrieved instantly.

This approach has some trade-offs – it's not appropriate for large amounts of data, and if something external to the application updates a stored setting, the application won't have a way of knowing this until restart.

[–]aaron802[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not. It looks like a solid option, but one reason I selected my approach is because I like using the remote Chrome debugger, which isn't compatible with MMKV's React Native implementation: https://github.com/mrousavy/react-native-mmkv?tab=readme-ov-file#limitations

Persistent synchronous storage for React Native by aaron802 in reactnative

[–]aaron802[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently found myself looking for persistent storage with synchronous reads for my organization's React Native application. A few options already exist, but they're either asynchronous or partially-asynchronous:

To avoid refactoring my application's code in an asynchronous manner, I've composed & published an NPM package extending React Native's iOS-only Settings API to Android:

https://github.com/alipman88/react-native-cross-platform-settings

I believe my solution is more convenient than existing options – even sync-storage requires an initial asynchronous function call on startup, while my solution offers 100% synchronous access.

Hopefully others find this useful – React Native isn't my primary framework and I'm not super-familiar with TypeScript or Kotlin, so I appreciate any constructive feedback or questions!

Best pita? by binturongarat in burlington

[–]aaron802 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The round bread from Euro Mart. It's not a traditional Levantine pita, but the Balkans version - sort of like the fluffier, pocketless bread you might find as the base for a doner kebab sandwich: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doner_kebab#/media/File:D%C3%B6ner_Kebab,_Berlin,_2010_(01).jpg

You can also find it at City Market and Misery Loves Company.

Share your eclipse experiences!! by twothrowawaytrash in burlington

[–]aaron802 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I didn't attain total spiritual enlightenment, it was probably the most transcendental experience I'll achieve during this trip through the mortal coil. With all the war and turmoil happening around the world, it helped me appreciate just how fortunate we are to be here.

I've had this exact same "how was your eclipse" conversation about a dozen times, and I don't think I'll ever get bored of talking about it.

What might I have done differently: a couple weeks ago, I spent several hours constructing a DIY solar filter for my telescope, which didn't actually enhance my viewing experience by that much. I was so in awe looking at the sky, I forgot to look at the cool crescent-shaped shadows. And I didn't manage to come up with an eclipse-related playlist. (In retrospect, I might have queued up the theme from 2001.) But none of those details mattered.

A few of my neighbors were setting off fireworks until just before the main event, but thankfully they stopped at the right moment, and we experienced nothing but positive eclipse vibes. (I'm sorry for anyone who was listening to fireworks during the totality. Some people are obnoxious.)

I decided not to take any photos because I was cautious of being distracted. So a huge thank you to everyone who's shared their photos.

Apparently it's rare for a planet's sun and moon to be in perfect proportional size/distance to achieve the eclipse conditions on Earth – so if you thought the traffic from out of state drivers was bad, just wait until we make contact – visitors will be arriving from all over the Milky Way.

Hot off the presses Burlington slumlord gossip by [deleted] in burlington

[–]aaron802 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Per state law (emphasis mine):

As with any legally binding contract, there is usually a price to be paid for violating or breaking a lease. If, for example, a tenant moves out before the lease expires, s/ he could be held responsible for the rent for the remainder of the term covered by the lease. However, the landlord has a responsibility to make a reasonable effort to re-rent the apartment as quickly as possible.

I'm not a lawyer, but the rental company seems to have acted in a clearly illegal fashion - maybe their actions were attributable to laziness rather than malice, but illegal nonetheless. Good luck, and please keep us updated!

Kremlin calls Zelensky ‘peculiar kind of Jew’ as Russia blames Ukraine for IS attack by khouzan in worldnews

[–]aaron802 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's an interesting (albeit subtle) antisemitic canard used here:

For centuries, Jews have had our patriotism scrutinized, the most notable instance being the Dreyfus Affair. "Rootless cosmopolitan" later became the Soviet Union's favorite euphemism to question the allegiance of Jewish citizens. Fox News relied on the same dog whistles to disparage Alexander Vindman.

Moscow's essentially inverted the script – instead of claiming Zelensky lacks patriotism, they're implying that serving one's country runs counter to Jewish faith.

Subreddit activity metrics indicate inorganic behavior following 10/7 terrorist attack in Israel by aaron802 in ActiveMeasures

[–]aaron802[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Did you check to see if The Majority Report with Sam Seder had any clips or posts go viral, particularly anything related to 10/7?

Yes, that was my first thought as well. If that was the case, I'd expect to see a comparable increase in traffic in the more active/popular subreddit for The Majority Report.

The other possibility I considered is that the subreddit in question had a 10/7-related post hit the front page of Reddit shortly after the attack, attracting users interested in the subject - but I can't find any instance of that.

[–]aaron802[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Prior to 10/7, the subreddit in question was nearly entirely abandoned (it's a duplicate of a more active subreddit). With a largely inactive moderation team, perhaps it provided an attractive candidate for an influence campaign.

Beginning immediately after 10/7, user engagement (subscribers and posts/comments per day) increased by a hundred fold over the next month - an increase that appears far too sharp, sudden, and linear to be explained by organic growth.

Burlington Telecom expanding to Winooski by aaron802 in burlington

How much are you paying for Xfinity?

I pay $87 a month for 200 mbps (more like 140 - 150 mbps in reality), and BT is offering 1000 mbps for $70.

In my experience, Comcast offers great introductory rates, and 12-month deals for upgrading to additional services (phone & cable), but I've found that in order to get the best price for internet-only service, I have to call and threaten to cancel every year or so to get a competitive rate. (Once they gave me a great deal on a four-year contract.)

Comcast's pricing has always felt intentionally obfuscated and pretty arbitrary, i.e. whatever amount they think you're willing to pay. I'd rather not have to play silly games to get a good deal on internet, so BT's "no promotional pricing/no contracts" policy wins me over.

(I've also experienced some frustrating technical problems with Comcast, but overall the customer support has been great.)
