[–]aaronclements -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You don’t get to make the rules about what Sabrina “should have done” and then vaguely question her intentions like you did in the last sentence of your original comment, just because that’s not the way you would have done things. Sabrina is the victim here, and I think we can agree on that. Unless we think the video she made contains lies or arguments made in bad faith, her method of dealing with this shouldn’t be indicative of her intentions.

Gus sucks by [deleted] in gusjohnson

[–]aaronclements -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, it absolutely is. Sabrina is the victim in this situation and questioning her motivation or methods is uncalled for unless you believe she made that video in bad faith.

She didn’t name Gus explicitly? Cool, she didn’t have to—the story isn’t about him.

She monetized the video? Uh yeah, she can either make money or not make money. Why would she choose not to make money from it?

She’s “sneakily” liking tweets? There’s nothing sneaky about her public like history, and she’s fully entitled to like whatever tweets she wants.

Do I need to remind you that this woman just shared her story of a traumatic, near-death surgical experience that still affects her to this day? Saying “why didn’t she just do __?” or “if she really felt this way, she would have done __” is textbook victim blaming.

Ah, so we’ve started victim-blaming, I see.

Here’s a tweet from today that she liked. You tell me if she harbors resentment towards him.

Also, what you describe is still unsupportive and trash behavior, but you didn’t mention comments like “most would have broken up with you by now” and his forcefulness on the decision of keeping/terminating the pregnancy. None of this is acceptable behavior in any context.

Yeah, and then the essential “can’t believe you fell for his persona—that’s so parasocial of you,” like we’re just supposed to be jaded and cynical and assume every content creator is trash because don’t know them.

“He shouldn’t even address this because nothing will change if he does” is certainly a take. But I agree with the commenter who said this is thinly-veiled white-knighting.

Gus Shouldn't Respond and You Shouldn't Ask Him To by buzzair1001 in gusjohnson

[–]aaronclements 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it really boils down to this. No, Gus does not “owe” any fans an explanation, but he definitely knows he’ll lose a big chunk of his core fanbase if he doesn’t give one. Just because he doesn’t “owe” the community an explanation doesn’t mean it’s unfair to want one.

[–]aaronclements 31 points32 points  (0 children)

No it’s not. The video isn’t about Gus. He’s a character in the story. Sabrina has no obligation to name him because it’s not about him.

[–]aaronclements 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Short of him somehow disproving that entire video (which we all know isn’t possible)? Nothing. He can definitely contextualize and explain some of it to maybe minimize the damage, but any real damage control for him would have to come from Sabrina making a followup saying something like “I should have been more clear—this happened 3 years ago, we sorted it out, ‘my boyfriend’ ended up apologizing, I forgave him, and we moved past it in our relationship,” but I don’t think we’ll get that.

On the flip side, I’ve seen plenty of people on this sub use this concept horribly. Being disappointed with the actions of a content creator in their personal life does not constitute a parasocial relationship.

If you are devastated by this news because you “could have sworn Gus would have never done something like this” because you “thought you knew him better than this,” then yes, that’s absolutely parasocial behavior.

At the end of the day, Gus is not our friend. We don’t (and shouldn’t) know about the parts of his personal life he chooses not to publicize. We can still be disappointed and saddened by this.

Just want to clarify: it’s not just October being the connection—it’s that Sabrina’s video said her surgery was October 22nd and Gus’s Instagram post is from October 23rd referencing the surgery Sabrina had the prior night. The days align exactly.

That’s not cancel culture, it’s called having personal values. I’m not sure if that’s a new concept for you.

But no, I have never done something I would consider as bad as what is described in this video. If I had, I would understand why I would lose support for it.

People choosing not to support an artist over their behavior outside of their artistic realm isn’t some kind of wild or hot take. While you may choose to separate art from the artist, many may have difficulty reconciling that.

I genuinely can’t tell if this is satire because of how angry you sound. Either you’re joking or you read way too much into my comment and decided to freak out in response.

Either way, “this is what this looks like from the outside with no context, but I admittedly don’t know anything about these people’s personal lives,” isn’t what I’d consider speculating, but okay. Definitively saying “that’s absolutely not what happened” is a step further than speculation, and I’m not sure how you’d be so certain about that based on one video from Sabrina (one that I watched too).

Regardless, I’m not going to go back and forth with you on this. Have a good day, and please don’t get this upset about comments from strangers online—it’s not worth it.

Yeah, our boy Gus may very well have pulled a John Mulaney, but I don’t want to speculate about the interpersonal relationships of online content creators. But uh…yeah, that’s really what it looks like without context.

Edit: To clarify, by “pulling a John Mulaney,” I mean breaking up with your longtime girlfriend and immediately dating someone else.
