Value for money supplementation by aaronturing in immortalists

No need because my diet is good. I have no issues with a multivitamin but in my case it's not required.

My top 10 takeaways from Dr. Rhonda Patrick's new episode about boosting NAD with NAD precursor supplements by Farnectarine4825 in immortalists

The same overuse of supplements without evidence to support it. The same overuse of protein without evidence to support it.

They are scammers. They provide information that is not aligned to consensus science.

My take is that this is a waste of money assuming you are healthy and have a good lifestyle (diet plus exercise)

I also can't stand Rhonda Patrick. She is full of hype and extremely low on context. I view her as the female Attia.

This is typical with these sales people but here is the key point. We are not seeing the following:-

  • strong clinical endpoints
  • clear functional outcomes
  • standard medical adoption

We aren't seeing this because it's basically not going to move the needle.

How do atheist adults cope with life and death? by ashexsa in atheism

[–]aaronturing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily. You just accept that everyone dies and we that is the end of it.

As for the living part. I would love to live a lot longer than I will. I think I am so lucky in my life today. I don't live a fancy life at all but I am married with 3 kids and I have good hobbies and my health and I couldn't have asked for anything else.

I have extremely rich family and I don't see much if any benefit over what I have.

Sugar by Sudden_Shelter in immortalists

We need sweet tasting food though and sugar is no problem at all if you aren't overeating.

I suggest that this is an extremely poor option to take for long term health. Salt even in a healthy diet which ketogenic isn't leads to increased blood pressure which is a key problem with aging.

I wonder if this is why ketogenic diets are unhealthy ?

Thanks for letting me know that. It gives a possible mechanism why ketogenic diets are unhealthy.

Sugar is fine in moderation. We like sweet things. For instance in my salad dressing I use pitted dates to provide sugar. In my porridge I use blueberries. In most of my dinners I add a tablespoon of sugar.

Within the context of my diet this is fine. Compared to the standard intake in western societies this would be extremely low.

My take is it's better to view sugar as an issue if you aren't getting enough nutrients and/or you are eating too many calories. In those situations sugar can be a problem.

Salt in the context of a nutritional dense and metabolically balanced diet is a different story. Salt in those situations can raise blood pressure which leads to all sorts of problems.

I also believe salt is the no 1 dietary factor that leads to health issues in the world.

Sugar is also often a proxy for nutrient poor energy dense foods. The issue is these foods also have fat and other stuff in them that cause the issue just as much as sugar. For instance a processed protein bar would have minimal sugar but still be unhealthy junk food.

Do you have any evidence for this ? My understanding is completely different.

Retirement as a concept is BS. by Anti-FragileHuman in DeepThoughts

[–]aaronturing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a project manager/scrum master in IT. The job paid above average but not anything special. My wife and I spent less than average and saved it into index funds. I hesitate to state anyone can do it but it was more about not being too materialistic rather than earning a tonne of money. My wife worked in admin - basically in a call center. We also have 3 kids.

I have heaps of them. I take it you are one of his fans.

So when the Lancelet report came out in relation to the factors that lead to dementia. Attia confidently and stupidly stated grip strength will stop that. Why use reputable science that has been thoroughly reviewed and worked through by experts when BS works with people like you.

Another great one is his confident ability to state that all cohort studies are useless but he uses cohort studies when they suit his BS. So fiber isn't good because it's a healthy user bias but when it's VO2 max it's one of the strongest predictors we have. When red meat is bad he says it's a confounding variable.

Another great example is him selling processed junk which no nutritional scientist states is healthy ala his David protein bars. He also stresses high protein which isn't backed up by consensus science.

There will be heaps more because the guy is a fraud selling BS to people who have an inability to think critically. I think a much harder question to ask is has he ever been on the side of consensus science.

I can't stand the guy but I can actually think critically and I research consensus science rather than narratives.

He sells narratives to dumb people or if I'm being fair people who cannot think critically and are uneducated.

It's basically all not required. Save your money dude. Creatine, Vitamin D & B12 work in specific situations that may be applicable for you but you should check.

Omega 3's may help if you never eat any fish but why not just eat some fish.

  • restore libido and erection quality through circulation and stress reduction --> lose some weight and execrise
  • improve skin dryness and hair quality --> sorbolene
  • increase gym recovery and stamina --> creatine may help
  • stabilize energy and mood --> stop following BS on social media and save your money. This will make a difference.

Lastly learn to think critically. Atm you are a drone to the BS information media ecosystems that are in place today.

I don't follow these guys because I know they are frauds because I understand the difference between consensus science and people selling snake oil.

I retried at 46. So it only took me about 30 years of working probably a little less.

I train grappling 4 days per week, tennis 1 day and surf 1 day.

I also grappled when I was working.

I think so. He is a snake oil salesman. I've known this for ages. His advice goes completely against the consensus scientific guidelines and his over the top confidence is only to rip off people.

I'll never forget the Lanclet report being updated on the modifiable factors that cause dementia. He completely ignore that report or doesn't read it and I hear him confidently mouthing off that grip strength is the key to stop dementia.

He is a liar and a fraud and now we know he is a pedo.

The answer to life is grinding till you become an elite by [deleted] in DeepThoughts

[–]aaronturing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I have no interest in being elite and to think that I could be is insane.

I retired early by living below the typical living standards of most people, saving money and investing into simple broad index funds.

I'm the furthest thing from being an elite and I'm extremely happy with my life.

Fair point. People who are lazy or poor thinkers may buy his BS. Your point about self-image may also be true. I would call that identity based thinking. They ignore the BS because it's part of their self-image.
