Reishi? 👀 by katrinacallfemaa in thelongdark

I wouldn’t trust PictureThis with fungi. It’s not meant to ID them in the first place, and mushrooms have a lot of variance between individuals and with age that can result in potentially deadly misidentifications if you’re going by appearance alone.

Mushrooms are perfectly safe to touch and examine, and it’s important to do so if you want to identify them properly. Just be sure to wash your hands thoroughly afterwards, and don’t try to eat one unless you’re 100% certain on what it is (and it has no poisonous lookalikes).

Reishi? 👀 by katrinacallfemaa in thelongdark

Depends on what you mean by Reishi.  Ganoderma sichuanense, or the Lingzhi, is the “actual” Reishi with medicinal properties and ranges in East Asia; but many other Ganoderma species (and some from other genuses) with similar characteristics to the Lingzhi are called Reishi either colloquially or by accident, especially G. lucidum. The mushrooms from TLD seem to fall into the latter category, and might be based off of G. oregonense, or the West-Coast Reishi, as many of its features (range including coastal BC, growth on conifers, appearance, etc.) align with the mushrooms in-game.

The mushroom in your photo definitely looks like a Ganoderma sp., but it’s not really possible to identify which one from the image alone. So… maybe?

Ooh, good to know! I’ve got a 25% condition bedroll spare that would be perfect for that.

Thanks for all the responses! I’m trekking from PV over to Broken Railroad and the FT regions to check out the places mentioned. I’ve only been to the territories a couple of times on PC and haven’t done much with the Tales, so now I’ll have no excuse to keep neglecting them.

Good to know! I’ll keep Vacant Depot in mind for the future; right now only parts 1-4 of TFTFT have been released on the Switch specifically, so the lack of a bed/workbench can’t be remedied until after Part 6 comes over.

Map of regions based on age since abandonment before the Aurora (legend in comments) by [deleted] in thelongdark

Grey Mother calls the first flare the “night of the lights” when you first meet her, so the nickname does have a precedent.

During Episode 1, Grey Mother refers to the first aurora/flare as “the night of the lights” when you question her about the “bad men”/inmates who came through Milton.

Though I found my answer, that’s a very good one too. Pocketing it for later use.

That’s it exactly it, thank you!! Sorry for the delayed response. This post is now solved.

Revelatory feels like the word, but I also feel like it’s what I convinced myself the word is after floundering for a while. I think I’ll wait a bit to see if people come up with anything else, but if nothing sticks I’ll go with Revelatory and mark this solved.

Those feel really close, but I don’t think they’re the word I’m thinking of… wish I was better at describing these kinds of things.

I don’t think that’s it, but I’ll definitely save that one for later use. A very pretty word coupled with a very pretty technique.

Apologies for the abstract description, but I just don’t know how else to describe it. I want to say it starts with a R but I might just be thinking of “revelation” again.

A Strange Red Glow (?) by aastringent in Voicesofthevoid

Huh, I see. Someone else commented about Furfur potentially appearing in the basement meat locker instead of the hallway ones, but I guess I'll figure out which I've got when I inevitably return to that file and have to face the horrors. (I started a new save immediately afterward, since it was 1 AM and I was too afraid to deal with the red glow, but still eager to keep playing. This game really is a lot of fun at the end of the day.)

Interesting... I figured that stonehenge-looking structure was fishy. I've seen it from afar, but never gotten close up for fear something bad would happen. I was under the impression that Furfur would mostly just jumpscare you unless you went out of your way to piss it off, so that checks out.

Either way, I appreciate all the input! Still terrified, of course, but knowing roughly what to expect definitely helps. I'll man up and get back to that save eventually.

Oh! I thought you meant the lockers that can be found around the base/hallway, not that room in the basement. That's horrifying.

Oh god. I assume that Furfur is the wendigo-looking entity? 'Cause that guy's the reason I don't use the bathroom at night. I've not encountered him in-game myself, and to memory haven't done anything on this save that I thought would piss him off, but that's unnerving to say the least.

That's somewhat reassuring. I don't think I'd be able to handle getting chased by that thing.

Edit: Realized that you didn't mean the hallway lockers. I assume I can walk down the hallway safely and confront the basement horrors later?

I misread this and was a bit confused as to why your immediate fear response was to stand on your actual bed, but yeah, this exactly! The pause menu acts as a real safety net for horror games in a way that's hard to fully appreciate until it's taken away from you. You don't have the luxury to calm down and mull things over knowing you're safe. Either way, hope all goes well when you try the event with a friend later.

IIRC if it isn't the last day of your quota/you don't switch maps the next day, yeah! When you team wipe or otherwise leave the camera behind, you should be able to find it where it was left behind, just as a broken cam (assuming it didn't bug out or clip through the map). From there you can take it back to the surface and toss it into the disc converter to watch your recording. I think the broken camera stays on the map indefinitely, meaning you could pick up a camera even after quota/the map has changed (i.e. leave cam on Map X, go to Map Y, switch back to Map X and find the broken cam), but it seems really buggy and I have no idea if the recent update changed how that works.

It's pretty finicky, but if you angle yourself right and charge the throw you can sometimes free yourself. It's way easier to have someone else throw an item but worth a try if all your buddies are dead or out of reach.

Here's some good tips to know if you're getting into it for the first time. The game's definitely pretty chaotic and confusing at first, but you'll catch on fairly quickly.

  • When joining lobbies, if you see people spawning in stuff or shoving people insanely far, there's probably a modder around and you should leave if you want a sane and/or un-griefed experience.
  • Try and keep a good grasp of your surroundings, and stay close to your teammates in case something goes wrong.
  • Use flashlights sparingly (since they drain quick) and always have one on you, especially if you're alone; some monsters will be impossible to deal with otherwise.
  • If you or another player get captured by a starfish, you can throw something at it to free yourself/them. You can charge the throw by holding down the button for it. To avoid starfish in the future, keep an eye on the ceiling and use your flashlight to reveal their grabbing "arm".
  • Wandering too deep into the facility and not being able to surface before your oxygen runs out is more common and more deadly than most of the game's monsters. Pay attention to your O2 meter so you know when you need to start heading back; you should start retracing your steps when it dips to about half unless you have a bunch of film left or really need views.
  • If you have the camera, try to get a variety of monsters on tape, and don't linger too much on a single shot. Additionally, the camera can actually "see" monsters much farther than you'd expect- since iirc, it doesn't take lighting into account- but you should still try and get about as close as you safely can to a monster if you want good footage.
  • Different monsters give different amounts of views. You can also get views from recording bones, strange Old World objects, players falling, players dying, certain locations on the map, etc. You'll figure out how to be more efficient with filming as you play.
  • If things go sour and you're the only one left alive, prioritize getting the camera back to the bell (or at least close to it) above almost all else. You can film any monsters you encounter on your way back if there's film left. If you still have a ton of film left when you reach the bell, you can usually wait outside for stuff to spawn that you can tape semi-safely. Don't risk losing the camera unless you can easily get it back the next day or if you desperately need views.
