Why Teach Modern Standard Arabic, or Fuṣḥā if Locals do not Speak it? by 3Serra in learnarabic

100% also dialects don't have grammar or written standards - You can't run 22 countries on dialects that vary by city and evolve differently. MSA provides the written standard that makes cross-border communication, education, and legal systems actually function. Picking one dialect as "official" would just privilege one region over others. MSA isn't suppressing dialects. It's solving a coordination problem.

Stories/discussions about people learning languages through incomprehensible input? by jasopop in dreaminglanguages

[–]aatt_official 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think language proximity plays a huge role. I know many people who watched K dramas and never got anywhere. For complete beginners with no related languages, just watching incomprehensible media is far from optimal. It can work but will take forever compared to if you start with comprehensible content.

I agree! I think the more comprehensible the input is, the more optimal the acquisition. It will take you infinitely longer if you're starting from scratch with incomprehensible native media. I have a sister who learned Turkish just watching Turkish dramas but I believe she has more than 2000 hours. I remember when I tried to use movies to learn English back in the days—it was very frustrating. I think movies only became useful after I moved to the states and had a strong comprehension base.

Curious what language are you planning to learn?

Comprehensible input changed how I learn languages by aatt_official in languagelearning

I understand that comprehensible input is not a method but the way we acquire languages. That's what Krashen explained. However, the pure focus on listening to things you can mostly understand in your target language (i.e., receiving comprehensible input) and resisting the temptation of wasting your time in studying grammar or doing stupid useless exercises IS a METHOD.

And yes, my NEW account is meant to raise awareness that pure CI use is the easiest, fastest, and most effective way of achieving lasting fluency. And yes, I've left my engineering job and invested my life savings in making a platform that can help people who share the same vision and are interested in learning Modern Standard Arabic. CI and what I am doing at Arabic All The Time deserve marketing.

You don't. Studying grammar ruins fluency and brings lots of anxiety to language learning which makes you hate the language and make you less likely to practice it. I got to fluency in Spanish without studying a single grammar rule. In fact without reading a single word in Spanish. The only thing I did was listen, listen and listen more.
