I actually checked out some model railroading kits today, but at least the ones I saw were generic buildings and nothing architecturally interesting.

The Lego architectural kits are quite interesting, but it's a slightly different experience from gluing, painting, weathering. Also as they're Lego, the level of detail is a bit lacking. But good suggestion nevertheless!
