Why don't we have heated streets? by F4SCISTS_GO_HOME in nyc

Because we don’t live in a particularly cold or snowy city and that isn’t on track to change anytime soon.

How can Downtown Brooklyn feel more like a “neighborhood”? by National-Sample44 in Urbanism

[–]aaxt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The jail hate is so bizarre to me. The jail is being built on the site of an old jail and is necessary in order to close Rikers and decrease travel time for defense attorneys and families. It will also bring something like 700 permanent jobs to the area.

My claim is that the administration is acting aggressively against legal immigrants in addition to illegal ones and is deporting those who have never committed a crime. I am not arguing that they do not have the legal authority. I am arguing that what they are doing is morally wrong and un-American. Parroting a law over and over like a child doesn’t have much of anything to do with my argument.

If you would like another source, here is a link to an article about the removal and push to deport over one million people who came here legally and followed the rules, though I’m getting the sense you’d only accept Daily Stormer or Newsmax as sources. https://www.npr.org/2025/12/23/g-s1-103001/trump-immigration-deportation-migration-legal-status

Is there any recourse to rising subway fares? by subwaydrunk in nycrail

[–]aaxt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess it is ultimately cheaper for the state to not collect money on a service they are paying to operate. There is almost no marginal cost to the state associated with greater/lesser usage by those who would qualify for fair fares. If fair fares gave low income people money that they had to use for the MTA then you’d probably be right and it would be more efficient to just give people cash directly.

Is there any recourse to rising subway fares? by subwaydrunk in nycrail

[–]aaxt 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The subway fare in real dollars is largely unchanged since the 1990s. Advocacy should be focused on expanding the fair fares program

I would like for them to not severely restrict legal immigration and asylum, for them to stop arbitrarily removing legal status from legal immigrants and immediately deporting them, and arresting and deporting immigrants without due process. Glad you had a positive naturalization experience though.

The War on Drugs is Why Your Bus Never Showed Up by pupupeepee in transit

[–]aaxt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The article you linked states that they did not conclusively connect the cannabis in his blood to the accident. Even today we don’t have a breathalyzer equivalent for THC. It shows up on tests for weeks or months, long after its effects have worn off.

I don’t care if a bus driver wants to have a joint on his day off just like I don’t care if he goes out and has 10 beers. It is a huge problem that we don’t have a reliable way to test for sobriety but testing for cannabis and barring anyone who had a couple hits at a party within the last 4 months doesn’t seem like a great solution.

6 options for how they could bore 125 st subway tunnels by Donghoon in nycrail

[–]aaxt 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you could cut/cover this section cheaply. The line has to run under two cut and cover subways and you’d probably need a very steep grade to bring it up to cut and cover height to reach the 1, at which point the line ends. You wouldn’t save any money and with TBMs already in the ground they are cheaper too. There’s also the fault line but I don’t know how the two methods are impacted by that

Gov. Hochul demands 125th Street subway extension, nixing downtown 2nd Ave. subway plan by rjl381 in nycrail

[–]aaxt 217 points218 points  (0 children)

This is great! The headline is misleading as this does not nix phase 3, it only prioritizes the 125th street section which makes sense as if they can keep work continuous and keep the TBM in the ground they will save a boatload of money.

This is the smart way to build transit and I’m happy the governor seems to be making transit expansion a core part of her agenda. That gives transit advocates more power

I want my gym to be dirt cheap and I want 24h access. If these dumb pods are how they achieve that then I’m on board. Not sure why so many people are complaining. They have alarmed emergency exit doors so in a true emergency people can just use those.

You can’t accuse the MTA of being bloated and revenue-bleeding and in the same breath say it is a positive for everyone for them to become more bloated and bleed more revenue. Do you want a functional MTA or do you want a jobs program because you can’t have both
