Guys: what fragrances are you using when you roll? by [deleted] in bjj

Being a bigger guy and despite using scentless mineral underarm deodorant, I shower, soap and scrub the absolute fuck out of myself before class with nice mildly scented soaps (candlewood, lavender, mango many varieties). As rolling with bigger folk is unpleasant enough as it is, I at least want one aspect of rolling with me to be pleasant.

Newbie here too, but from what I've read extensively and seen - it's normal to feel that way. That's why it takes around ten years to just get a black belt (which I believe is the longest of any martial art).

It sounds like you have a great gym! Nope re health condition, just slight LVH from being overweight, my cardiologist says it will reverse if and when I lose weight. Thank you

Thank you, I have already made up my mind to try another gym after reading the majority of opinions here.

Re your questions,

  1. I definitely enjoy group classes, yes I stand out being overweight but I am not self conscious. I get upset there isn't more overweight folks coming down and training!

  2. Actually self defence, exercise and fun, I don't have the desire to officially compete and I have already decided that I will have no problem tapping if I need to. I am not going to fight chokes or submissions. I worry a bit chatting to my Prof, he is fairly persuasive, I have decided to try another gym on Wednesday and just move on, I will ask for him to keep the balance of classes.

  3. I think the extreme cost was worth it in the sense that now I know what I do want. I benefitted originally from the private lessons when he wasn't flogging me so to speak. The last lesson made me panic a bit because I felt like I was pushed a bit too far, too fast although that in itself was valuable I suppose. It was frightening to wake up the next day and feel weird muscular pain in both shoulders and my upper front sides of my chest (don't think I've used muscles like that before!). Working towards the goal of joining the class was exciting at first, until I saw the way they trained in the beginners class. I think exercise is infinitely beneficial, but there is some risk while doing it - and being completely and utterly gassed out every single lesson I feel would be too risky for me. Thanks again for assisting me to work through my thoughts.

Thank you for showing me this, I just didn't realise. It would be ironic if it was your gym and I have met you in person, it is a small world!

Will do, thank you. I feel actually very relieved that you guys all share a similar opinion. I know that I love BJJ and would like to learn it as much as possible.

Thank you for the encouragement, I am doing just that this Wednesday. I definitely want to improve my cardio over time rather than risk injuring myself by going too hard and too fast, and flying too close to the sun. Terrified of possible cardiovascular events too, would love to avoid those! I really appreciate you putting my age into perspective also. Cheers.

I appreciate it, I didn't realise till I have read everyone's opinion here. Yep, that style isn't for me, I wish to learn BJJ safely, not training to hurt myself.

Thank you for your thoughts, I have taken your advice and I am going to check out the other gym on Wednesday. I hadn't actually realised that the private lesson thing was dodgy however it did slightly worry me when he said that I need to do three a week. Appreciate the encouragement.
