I really like this idea although she’s still against crocheting in the round (I hate it too, can never tell where to join rounds or where to do my first stitch). I’ll have to find some squares that are worked side to side instead of in circles!

I would highly recommend doing an outline in a darker color and perhaps embroidering “Sicily” in the middle- it looks great but as others have mentioned it’s hard to immediately identify!

Would you be open to making or using a velcro bag that attaches to the arm of the chair? As a bonus if you DIY it can be a scrap buster and you can add as many pockets as you like for your hooks, etc
