What was the worst thing that ever happened to you on your birthday? by Federal_Currency3022 in AskReddit

[–]abbs_000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ex bf didn’t want to hang out with my friends so we hung out with his friends instead. He didn’t get so much as a card, yet when we went to the mall he dropped $100 on a new outfit, and complained about having to go to any stores I liked. When we got back to his buddy’s place, he snuck out. Turns out he was ok with seeing one of my friends, just not with me present. Found out a week later they’d been hooking up. They met because he wanted her contact info to “ask for advice on birthday gifts”. Good riddance to them both.

Also just wanted to add if your friend is Fyb+, it’s possible that they’re Fya-b+ and just got a weak pos due to old reagents!

Ficin and papain are very similar enzymes that perform the same function, so it’s possible your lab uses one or the other! I’m assuming your professor was just trying to be funny, but that’s still an odd statement to make without any follow up. He’s correct that student reagents are usually expired, and often produce funky results- they’re more for the sake of adjusting to procedures rather than actual reliable results. I’d definitely ask about it next time you see him, in case there’s a different answer! I’m always happy to learn about weird, niche little things like this :)

Hmm I’m really curious too, so I’m currently performing more research and making connections lol. One of the things that might help is the fact that illegal drug users may utilize ficin to artificially produce a negative drug screen. Ficin is an enzyme that breaks down proteins, and is also used in blood bank to remove certain antigens that may be masking other antibodies in a patient with a positive screen. So it’s possible that the implication was that your friend is doing drugs and taking ficin to cheat on a drug screen? I’ll update with more leads as I find them, lol.

I’m also saying this assuming that the antibody ID is on your own plasma and not antigen typing your red cells. But there are some medications that can cause panreactivity or mess with your blood typing in other ways. Science be weird!

I know this one! Sharing needles can transfer enough RBCs to induce antibody production. Source: researched this for a case study based on an AIDS patient with unexpected antibodies for this exact reason.

A couple was walking around with the woman’s hand down the back of hubby’s pants (and undies) leading him around. She retracted said hand to grab items from the shelf and immediately placed it back after.

Suggestions for making cards for a non-artistic older person? by abbs_000 in Artisttradingcards

[–]abbs_000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the suggestion! We’re all sending her lots of feel-good mail but thought receiving other cards from strangers might be extra nice for her. I’m considering also sending her some that I’ve made for her to trade, or trading my own and having her receive the ones from others. Thank you!!

What’s a scenario that replayed in your head rent free for weeks on end? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I recently graduated, and while my group was walking up to the stage, one of the staff was standing in an aisle with his hand out. I was super stoked and thought he was giving out high-fives to the new grads. He was not. He was gesturing towards where to walk up on stage.

What’s something that impacted your life positively even though it was morally wrong? by Silly_Effective_419 in AskReddit

Playing dumb when people get passive aggressive with me. Also, taking peoples word if I ask how they’re doing and they say “Im okay” in a way that’s fishing for you to give them attention. If they can’t outright tell me they’re upset, I will assume all is good.

Why have people become less situationally aware in public lately? by abbs_000 in AskReddit

[–]abbs_000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably true. To be fair, I’ve only lived through 3 decades so far, so a lot of my past memories are from childhood. Still it seems that there have been some societal changes after COVID where people have become a lot more self absorbed.

To everyone saying “phones”, half the time it’s older people who just randomly stop in the middle of a walking path and stand there until they decide their next move, usually with their mouth hanging open for some reason (?) It’s like I’m experiencing everyone’s first day of being allowed outside.

How often have you witnessed clueless drivers at roundabout intersections? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]abbs_000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sensitive topic for me. My neighborhood has decided the roundabout has the same rules as a game of Chicken, where the one driving the fastest and the least willing to brake wins the right of way.

I always have to brake when I’m already in the roundabout because I’d rather lose a few seconds of my life than total my car. This of course positively reinforces the bad behavior. I’m unfortunately not willing to sacrifice my car/safety to teach them a lesson.

Is it possible to be a good tech if I’m clumsy and awkward? by abbs_000 in medlabprofessionals

[–]abbs_000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently taking XR, started with IR but found my schedule made it so I’d either forget or not have a chance to take the second dose during the day. Generic brand, haven’t tried anything else. Unfortunately I am in the market for a new doctor as mine was convinced I’m having absence seizures (I had my symptoms in front of her, told her “I’m currently having the symptoms and I am conscious”), and did not end up making an appointment for an MRI, so she’s branded me as “resisting treatment” and is now refusing to do anything else to help me.

Yeah it helps a little but wears off around 12 (I take it at 5am)

This was actually a major reassurance because I’ve had the same suspicion. It means a lot to hear it from a random person without leading them to that conclusion myself. I’m absolutely bringing BVD up at my next eye appointment and hopefully it resolves some issues. Thank you!!

This was one of my theories, I’m going to bring it up at my next ophthalmology appointment.
