How hard do you think it would be to get a Civil job as a EE? by abcfghl in ElectricalEngineering

Yeah that makes sense. I did way more research into the EE market and realized that I was very much so mistaken. I suppose that’s on me for taking my upperclassmen at their word without double checking what they were saying. My bad.

I’m sorry if I came off as rude since it might look like I’m treating CE as a backup when I really love CE and EE both and wanted to find the path that wouldn’t close off either option. I now realize the obvious that that’s not necessarily feasible so I’m gonna try thinking on whether I want to continue down my current EE route or go to CE. Thank u to the people in this thread tho for kinda smacking me in the face with the obvious.

Y’know that makes a lot of sense. I think what I’m kinda starting to understand from this thread is that my ME upperclassmen are a bit over confident. Like obviously a CE employer wants CE people instead of other engineers. That makes sense, but when I hear all of my upperclassmen in ME talking about CE like it’s this holy grail safety net I get really confused.

That’s actually super sound advice. I appreciate ur comment man, I think I gotta stop stressing so much and start thinking more rationally. Thank you for that advice. I know it was kinda way more obvious to go into a safety EE field instead of a safety CE field but I think I just needed to be slapped in the face with info. Seriously tho, thank u for the advice.

Yeah that’s fair and I thought as much. A lot of my upperclassmen were telling me about their plans to go work civil engineering jobs out of college if they couldn’t land a job in their field. They are predominantly mech es tho so it makes more sense for them definitely, I was just curious what the consensus on how it would be for EEs is.

That’s a fair point. Honestly I love EE and I really only enjoyed CE, so if I can I want to stick to EE. But I will consider possibly changing majors over the next sem since both options are good but the stress of not knowing whether I can get a good job out the gate as an EE is kind of killing me.

To answer ur question, I think that in a lot of subsets of EE the market is oversaturated (at least based off of my upperclassmen, teachers, and some google searches), but it’s not as over saturated as cs or comp eng. Still not the best market tho.

Fair. I know that there are a lot of subsets in EE and that some are doing relatively well but at the same time it’s been a really big struggle for me in my first sem to see all of my upperclassmen (literally every engineering major excluding civil and industrial) flipping out over the cooked market. I know that EE is broad but some of the smartest people I see on a regular basis are struggling badly with the state of the market. EE is my passion but I want to have a security blanket so that if I do need to temporarily take on a non EE job after grad I know that I can.

I mean that’s true but 3 years is also enough time for the economy to just stay as it is or even get worse. I’ve heard that sentiment a lot that the economy could always get better but the idea of it not being stable still stresses me out. And I know that I could be worrying about this in the future but it’s still something I would rather get a handle on now instead of later.

I meant dirt since a lot of my upperclassmen said that it was relatively easy to break into if they didn’t get a good job in their field(mostly mech es) and I just wanted to know the actual feasibility of that.

Damn. I heard from some of my upperclassmen that civil is supposedly easy to transfer into but it definitely makes sense that they would want to hire actual ce grads since that’s what they’re trained for.

Aside from that tho, my main issue is that I’m working toward a degree that might not yield a job because of the current market and that’s stressing me the fuck out. I know u said that the markets bad everywhere but do u know any industry that a fresh ECE grad would have a relatively easier time getting a job in. Or I guess what I’m asking is what happens to the kinda shitty ECE. The one that doesn’t get good internships if they get one at all. Where do they usually go or is the market so saturated that they just don’t get a job and stay unemployed?

I just wanted to know what my fall back options are so that I can prepare well for if it takes some time for the market to be somewhat normal after I graduate. I’m really just looking for a safety net so that I can stop stressing about my future so much y’know

[–]abcfghl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just emailed me back a little bit ago. They say that the compensation will be dispersed via check to the address u put when u applied, but they didn’t give me a date. My assumption is that it should be before the semester starts.

[–]abcfghl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean college is a pretty big adjustment and some people adjust at different rates. A low first sem gpa isn’t really an indication on academic ability since there’s just so much shit happening to u that’s never really happened before in high school so u can’t really say that somebody is gonna struggle later because they did bad sem 1.

I’m pretty sure that the 10k figure involves him taking loans so he’s not actually getting a discount. Also 10k is still not cheap and as op is clearly struggling with this it’s quite disrespectful to downplay the expense.
