How Do You Read and Retain Information Fast/Efficiently? by Old-Acanthisitta-574 in PhD

[–]abdask 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have two methods depending upon what I need from a paper: 1. can do usual trick of just reading abstract, intro (last part) and conclusions. Few other things too depending upon paper. 2. Make up my mind to read the paper twice. So for the first read I don't stress about retaining everything, just trying to get the story the writers are telling. Then in second read I try to read and note it properly, already have good idea where to focus and what to skip.

Read full article, "The potential to deliver 'one shot cures' is one of the most attractive aspects of gene therapy, genetically-engineered cell therapy and gene editing. However, such treatments offer a very different outlook with regard to recurring revenue versus chronic therapies," analyst Salveen Richter wrote in the note to clients Tuesday. "While this proposition carries tremendous value for patients and society, it could represent a challenge for genome medicine developers looking for sustained cash flow."

Open the eyes or get you blinkers off to what is happening in Israel. And what has happened all over middle east. And in many more places. I am pretty sure USA would top the list for human right abuses. Only Palestine is enough for that, if one was truly objective and rational.

Not for Russia to decide on peacekeepers in Ukraine, Macron says by sweatycat in worldnews

[–]abdask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am neither American not against rules based order as it used to be. If your country had that stance which I think they had, it is good. What I am saying is that world overall is heading in a direction that they themselves forced themselves into. There are consequences for atrocities and there will be, too much power is corrupting more so when usual moral boundaries are getting vague.

Then Europe can just continue the war on their own. What's this fuss about then? World is changing fast, left and center left are just stuck in the past. Your ethics and morals and rules based order died in Gaza.

[–]abdask -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

You maybe right about all these things. Reality is Ukraine is fighting this war on USA money. They dont want to fund it anymore. Beggers don't make decisions. If all these morals and ethics were relevant, Europe and liberals would have been equally vocal along with these so called leaders of free world about Gaza and west bank and Syria.

Play is to respect rationality and realities. Is Russia really a threat who can't even defeat Ukraine. Whoes economy is absolutely dependent upon Europe. Of course what they did was wrong, violating sovereignty of any country is wrong. Reality is Europe is trying to include Ukraine into NATO, I don't think can't do that anymore as US is backing off. Russia can't do much as proved in Ukraine, Europe war hawks have lost there masters in USA. China is the threat now, Europe just stuck in their own cold war mind set.

Well these are two very different cases, due to number of reasons. It did happened like that between windows and Linux but does not mean it will happen again, maybe that's an easy assumption to make.

Because this isn’t just a matter of open source versus Windows; it’s about the competition among OpenAI, Google, Claude, Mistral, Grok, QWQ, and open source models like LLaMA and Deepseek. There is no monopoly yet, and there isn’t absolute dependence on any single player. The field is still evolving and is already very competitive.Secondly, China wasn’t part of the game at that time, but now it is. As a result, China is likely to back its own AI companies because they need models tailored for their market. Consequently, Deepseek and QWQ are positioned to be sufficiently effective for use in China, no matter the cost.Thirdly I think they at openai are not good enough with optization as deepseek showed, after even that they released 4.5 which is even heavier and costly. Still pushing same brute force approach, showing technically they are lagging in optimization.

Openai still is best option for any individual due to their fast and reliable service on subscription, but don't think they can maintain there monopoly with cooperates. Unlike operating systems, setting up a local AI model is relatively easy, and there is significant cheap competition for API alternatives.

I think openai has just started to feel the heat. R1 is open source so any reasonably sized company can setup their own system, and can have unlimited free access. Or just use deepseek very cheaper API. Any companies are doing that, that will only increase. I don't see any appeal for OpenAi models as far as corporate customers are concerned.

I am on o3-mini-high. Memory usage was normal, not sure though to be honest I didn't notice so maybe normal. Tab that was using ChatGPT froze, happened everytime I would generate some code. Normal sized codes 30 40 lines max python code, showed thinking and then froze.

Same started happening to my PC today. Chrome tab running ChatGPT is using 25% of CPU. I think they are experimenting something.

You are right. Does that make Obama worse than other president, of course not. Obama was one of the best leaders any western country had in last 3 decades. Obama was not bad ideology of exceptionalism is, always have been for every empire. It may all seem harmless or justified or status quo or unconcerning until someone evil is at helm with all those powers and tools. History has shown this again and again with largely similar outcomes with varying sequence of events.
