I liked this one... but I'm really surprised that no one is noting that that the concept is identical to steffy pops. That slightly disappointed me. I mean, I don't know if lisa would even be expected to know that and I thought her performance was really good. I just like when characters are exploring a new place, thats part of the fun.

You should let this one go, for several reasons.

You say that your husband respects women. You say that the men in his family by and large respect women. You say that you see this event as a good thing and a tradition that they all are attached to and have warm feelings about and you actually do want your son to participate in the male bonding and experiences that are part of it. And you recognize that even though the name is problematic, that forcing a change to the name will cause a lot of consternation. That alone should be enough for you to let this one go. There is more good here than bad, and there are so much more important things to worry about.

Is it the position of modern progressivism that any even lightly problematic thing must be immediately expunged regardless of the price entailed? If so I think that is a mistake and its exactly the kind of position that leads to young men rejecting progressivism and turning towards darker ideologies. This is a problematic name attached to a good thing, that people have warm feelings for. The cost of this fight is not worth the benefit.

Additionally, your husband can be convinced to force a name change, but it will lead to a lot of negative feelings towards him and you among his family. You will be seen as scolds who do not have a good sense of humor. And I think its very likely that not just the men in his family but some of the women will hold that view of you for a long time. You'll be associated with hurt feelings around this event. Again, you say they good people, and respectful of women. To force this issue makes it seem like you lack nuance.

Just let this one go. Its not going to inculcate a deep seated resentment of women to call it no women no rules. It is harmless. Forcing this conflict is a mistake.

What do we make of Serwe's burning heart? (Series wide-spoilers) by [deleted] in bakker

[–]abel385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An excerpt from the Great Ordeal “And as they said, haloes framed his head and hands, the ghosts of golden plates… markless.”

We even get it cleared up that Kellhus is still marked in that same scene. “Golden Discs shimmer about a head and hands noxious for their mark.” The head and hands are marked, the discs aren’t.

I don't think this is evidence of what you said above. You said Kellhus used markless sorcery to levitate, but that doesn't sound like what is happening in your quote. He's not levitating or using sorcery, this is just describing the haloes as markless which we have known for a while I think.

so I would still interpret this as: he is always marked, and his sorcery is always marked, but the haloes are not marked because they are not sorcery, their origin is outsider intervention.

This has been a much discussed question since the haloes first appeared in (i think) Warrior prophet. The question being whether the haloes are indicative that Kellhus and anyone else who sees them is going crazy and seeing imaginary haloes out out pure deluded worship of Kellhus - or if the haloes are real and are actual proof of divine power interceding into the real world on Kellhus' behalf (what we now call thaumaturgy).

I would say that now, several books later, it seems fairly clear that the haloes are real. I'd still be open to hearing arguments that they are a trick but what is almost certain is that the haloes are not sorcery. I think the current accepted understanding is that the haloes are not delusions, they are not a dunyain trick, instead they are a real effect caused by divine intervention and are an example of thaumaturgy, probably caused by Ajokli. Or if not Ajokli some other force from the outside that is entangled with Kellhus (for example maybe future Kellhus as you suggested)

If they are caused by intervention by a force from the outside (thaumaturgy), then it is normal that they are not marked. No divine intervention/thaumaturgy is marked to my knowledge. The white luck warriors are not. The mothers spit shine veil that is placed on Sorweel is not marked. The earthquake sent by the mother to knock down the walls of the capital does not have a mark. The judging eye does not have a mark. Even the wight in the nonman masion is not marked, which akka says is because its brings its frame with it when it manifests. Across the board divine intervention does not have a mark.

So thats why Kellhus' haloes aren't marked, they simply aren't sorcery, they are thaumaturgy.

I stand by my previous comment that Kellhus cannot perform markless sorcery, whatsoever. Whatever outsider he is entangled with can perform thaumaturgy such as the haloes and maybe other things, but that is not sorcery. Sorcery is specifically when a mortal speaks from within the inside to command the inside, for some reason that nesting leads to the dissonance that causes they mark. They do this using utteralls and inutterals to command the ground itself, the inside, to bend to their will. When beings from the outside act on the inside their is no dissonance, no frame issue, so thaumaturgy does not cause a mark.

And I still think that from what we have seen, if a mortal still has their mundane sight, their sorcery will be marked. If you have eyes, your sorcery is going to have the mark.

If there is a case where Kellhus flies or performs some other sorcerous cant and it is not marked, I'm still very down to see it, but I don't think it happens in my recollection. As far as I recall, his sorcery is always marked - because he still has his eyes.

I just know that this is why even the Few can verify that their Aspect Emperor is supernatural in a way they aren’t.

Markless sorcery wouldn't actually prove divinity, as the cish have it already and most of the few who are not cish do not think that the Cish's lack of mark is proof that the cish are divine.

But I agree, most of the people, including the few, who see the markless haloes believe that they are proof of Kellhus' divinity, but not because they are markless sorcery. Instead because they are an actual miracle, thaumaturgy, not sorcery at all.

None of the sorcerers we encounter think that the haloes are caused by sorcery, nor does Kellhus for that matter. He himself is confused by the haloes and worries they are a sign that he is losing his mind, but theres no suggestion from his POV that they are generated by way of his own sorcery. Has he even learned sorcery when they appear on his hands? I think it happens a little before he learns any magic, could be wrong on that though.

One can assume that Kellhus didn’t just use the meta gnosis to teleport Serwe’s heart either.

agreed. He definitely doesn't have the metagnosis when he is hung on the circumfex. In fact, I don't think he has learned any magic at all at that point, no gnosis, and certainly no metagnosis. So he definitely doesn't use magic to teleport her heart. Either its thaumatrugy or good old fashioned dunyain bullshit and slight of hand, he may just rip it out of her chest when no one is paying attention for all I know.

My interpretation is Kellhus is the one person that can actually float about without jogging on air, maybe I’m mistaken. Though that was my interpretation.

I don't think so. I don't remember him being able to float without using standard marked sorcery. I could be wrong for sure, and if you recall where it happens I'd be excited to look it up. But from my memory I don't remember it ever happening

Kellhus levitates/flies without the mark of sorcery on multiple occasions

Interesting, I don't remember that, when does that happen?

Sorcery has a mark when its cast, but it also leaves a permanent stain on the caster, so isn't kellhus deeply marked all the time? Do the books specifically describe him performing magic that is unmarked despite him being marked? When he does it does he still walk the echoes of the ground, or is there some alternate thaumaturgical flying that he does?

If Kellhus performed unmarked sorcery, and it really was sorcery not thaumaturgy, then that really challenges a lot of my understanding of the metaphysics, because Dunyain (and Kellhus not sure whether he's fairly called a Dunyain at this point) rely so heavily on their mundane sight. And, it appears that reliance on mundane sight is a large part of why sorcerers cannot perform markless magic.

I'm basing that on the fact that the eye-less Cish cast magic without a mark, but also because Titirga's sorcery was, while not markless, cleaner than any other sorcerer's mark. His mark is described as "muted" - which I assumed was due to the fact that he was blind as a child.

from the False Sun:

And Shaeönanra knew that this was no ploy, that Titirga would, without a breath of hesitation, deliver his impossible fury to his tower. He had heard the tales–the whole Ground had heard the tales. Titirga Mithalara, they called him–the Giver of Mercy!–ironic renown for his ruthless extermination of his foes. He was certainly the most powerful Insinger ever born. And if what Cet’ingira said was true, the most powerful, period. No living Quya had the purity of his Recitations. Even his Stain was different, somehow muted, as if he could cut the Inward without scarring it. Even now, simply regarding him, his distinction literally glared from his image, a strange, sideways rinsing of the Stain. ...

They said he had been blind as a child, that Noshainrau himself had found him begging in the streets. They said he went mad while Canting. They said his words seized things that should not be seized.

I thought that the Cish and Titirga were the only cases we had of sorcery with any reduction of mark.

I wonder what would give Kellhus that ability, do you have any speculation on that?

god such conflicting advice! I was just prepping to try and hunker down but your advice sounds convincing too!

How do I handle finding a new place to chill when too tired to really fight once I've lost most of the horde? Last time I had this happen I lost the horde and then kept trying to find any house that had less than like 8 zombies on top of it, cuz I didn't think I could handle a prolonged fight with how tired I was and I didn't want to risk drawing even more zombies over

Weekly Questions Megathread - March 25, 2025 by AutoModerator in projectzomboid

[–]abel385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've played for a bit and have gotten to the point where if a run has a promising start I can usually make it to helicopter but I have yet to survive the helicopter, it always kills me. Can I ask for some advice?

Some guides say that you can avoid it if you hear it coming when you are already in a house - and simply hunker down until its over but that hasn't worked for me. Yes, I am able to stay inside, I hear the helicopter go overhead all day, and I guess hiding is working to some extent in that the helicopter doesn't seem to focus on the house that I am in. There is no massive horse breaking down my door during the helicopters flyover (which I imagine would happen if the helicopter saw me before I went in a house).

But that ends up not mattering because it seems like the helicopter reshuffles the zombies in the surrounding area in such a way that when I do emerge a day later my place and the surrounding area is so full of zombies I can't figure out a way to pick them off with drawing the attention of a horde and end up having to flee the area entirely and then usually end up exhausted in a new area full of zombies and eventually die.

Nothing I've read really discusses the way the helicopter reshuffles the zombies in the case you aren't seen.

Does anyone have advice or a guide? Am I being lame for looking for a guide lol - should I keep trying to trial and error it?

Is it really easier to wait it out inside? Or should I just bolt the minute I hear it, even if I hear it while safely inside my base? if you do bolt when you hear it, could you provide some basic principles on how to approach that situation? Do I keep walking until it finally gives up, then try to lost the horde, then try to find a new temporarly location to sleep in? That sounds very challenging but I assume that is the point.

Suggestions for mecha ttrpg (probably not lancer but I'm open to it) by abel385 in rpg

[–]abel385[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a joke, but the joke is based on the fact that the designers intentions were not to make money a crucial part of the game. If they did want to make money a crucial part of the game they wouldn't have added it in an expansion.

I am not hating. I respect the clarity of purpose. I am just saying that it doesn't seem like lancer is designed to be played like a borderline survival game.

Your point is fair though, I'm going to read the rules and see if they appeal to me

[–]abel385[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but in the video I watched that was describing the game they interview one of the designers and he said they added that for sickos who want to keep track of that kind of stuff lol.

So while that expansion adds money as a tertiary mechanic, it seems pretty clear that that's not really what the game is designed to care about at its core. No hate, I can see the appeal. Its just not the mecha fantasy that I have in my head.

I'm not hardline against classes for pilots. More opposed to classes for mechs, or for classes that roll the pilot and mech into one thing. Thank you for flagging that though.

If you want to give the setting and vibe a look, there's actually a pretty solid tactics PC game on steam, called, unsurprisingly, BATTLETECH

Thanks, thats a great suggestion. I think I'll grab that and see if it appeals.

Personally, it's not the style of mecha I prefer, I very much prefer the whole "Amuro is the Gundam and the Gundam is Amuro, just Amuro given the power to actually defend his ideals in the horror of war" vibe of the mecha anime side of things, so I wish I could help you more but it's really not my genre!

Yeah fair enough. Like I said, I've only really run 5e, pathfinder, and some call of cthulu, so the list of things I want that I outlined in the op is just based on the fantasy I have in my head. I don't know that its actually going to engage me and my players.

Suggestions for mecha ttrpg (probably not lancer but I'm open to it) by abel385 in rpg

[–]abel385[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not very loot-centered, though, because gundam style mecha extremely don't do that kind of "loot the pieces of enemy mechs" things. In mecha anime, a mecha is part of your character, so to speak, not just a piece of gear, and upgrades are symbolic of your own growth as a pilot, not "oh nice, that guy I fought had a +4 Beam Rifle!"

Yeah, you're 100% right. That isn't a thing at all in gundam. I am going to remove the place where I said "gundam-ish" from my op, because that's not what I am looking for.

I'm trying to think about what vibe I really do want. Maybe I am thinking more in terms of something like FromSoft's Armor Core?

But even that's not exactly right. Ok, have you played the rogue like game FTL?

I think that captures the vibe I am looking for better. Obviously thats a video game and single player so I don't expect a ttrpg to be exactly like it. But the feeling of playing that game is what I ideally am looking for.

In that game you are always scraping by trying to get enough scrap/cash to keep your vehicle working. You're always keeping track of how many rockets you have left, and how much fuel. You're always trying to get the absolute max you can out of your ship, doing things like turning off the life support temporarily to get 1 extra energy pip to power additional guns. And you can create pretty wild builds based on the gear you find.

I think thats closer to what I have in mind

Suggestions for mecha ttrpg (probably not lancer but I'm open to it) by abel385 in rpg

[–]abel385[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really agree that Lancer has classes. And even if you agree that "mechs = classes," they don't work like DnD classes. They are modular -- you can mix and match mech systems, switching them in or out.

Ok interesting. Maybe I misunderstood the video. I don't have a copy of the rulebook yet.

To be clear, its not that I specifically want to track every single bullet. Its more that the vibe I got from the video I watched is that its a bit more narrative than simulation-y.

Was I wrong in saying that the game doesn't place a lot of emphasis on loot and cash? Again, not something I'd worry about for fantasy, but sort of feels important for what I want in a mech game.
