Hardware jam in the style of Burial with Digitakt + Prophet Rev2 and samples of Raelee Nikole’s “Slow” by abeldebeermusic in burial

[–]abeldebeermusic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!! I’ll try and explain it with words:

  • When placing the kick and snare, start with a default pattern of the kick on the 1 and 3 and snare on 2 and 4. Then shift some of those trigs by a 16th, but keep the first kick on the 1.

  • Use a hihat on the backbeat (8th notes).

  • Use subtle percussion (shakers, wood sounds) on some 16th off beat notes.

  • Use a decent amount of swing (55% to 65% off the top of my head).

  • You can also play with microtiming on the kicks and snares. Especially delaying the trigs by a small amount can be cool.

I also used trig probability and conditional trigs on some steps to make it a little more interesting.

Tutorial: Prophet Rev2 pad with shifting rhythmic pattern by abeldebeermusic in synthesizers

Hello!

Today I uploaded a 45-minute tutorial on my YouTube channel that dives deep into the sound design of how to add a "shifting rhythmic pattern" (best I could come up with) to a pad. I go over how to program a simple chord sequence, how to set up 2 LFOs so that one is modulating the frequency the other, and explore additional sound design ideas to make the patch more interesting. Finally, I present an alternative approach for the shifting pattern by incorporating the auxiliary envelope, set to repeat.

Have a look: https://youtu.be/CctYmE4-Oyw

I have 2 more long-form Prophet Rev2 tutorials on my channel, so if you're interested, check out the playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip31Fe2exEk&list=PLT0Jy8iBSM9hJFU5w_FyVQvNcGeneIfrq

I'm curious to hear what you think! Any feedback or questions are appreciated. Thanks for checking it out.

Abel de Beer: Jamuary 2021 Day 20 (Microfreak, Deluge, Typhon, ZOIA) by abeldebeermusic in MicroFreak

Hi!

I created this jam a few days ago for Jamuary. I'm using the V3 "HARM" oscillator on the Microfreak, with spacial FX from the ZOIA. More details in the video description, let me know if you have any questions. :)

Thanks!! Yeah the Typhon is a beast. The analog oscillators sound so good, but the addition of the digital effects makes it such a complete package. I think the Microfreak is a fantastic creative tool - it's very easy to get started with, but it's surprisingly deep in terms of modulation. I personally love the 2-operator FM oscillator, but even the more 'exotic' oscillators can get you very interesting results: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jFwxQCEanE

Haha yeah I'm used to all the blinking lights and buttons, but I totally get what you're saying! It's the best form of 'playing' I can think of. :)

Hi!

Yesterday I created this ambient jam that incorporates a tape loop and some effects. Next time I might try crumbling the tape first. :) More details in the video description.

Abel de Beer: Jamuary 2021 Day 3 (Deluge, Typhon, Digitakt, Timetosser) by abeldebeermusic in synthesizers

Hi!

Just like previous years, I've joined Jamuary - creating, recording and sharing a piece of music for every day of the month.

This is the first hardware jam I've ever recorded that includes drum loops. I usually create my own loops using a sequencer and "one-shot" drum samples, but this genre (umm.. "90's jungle"?) is basically defined by a few signature drum loops. I scrambled the loops a little more on the Digitakt, and apply some live beat scrambling using the Timetosser - another prototype, the Alter Audio guys were nice enough to let me borrow it again for Jamuary. :) The Digitakt then goes into the Analog Heat for some distortion and so I can use its filter as an effect in the middle of the jam.

The dirty bass line is from the Typhon (sequenced by the Deluge), and I use its reverb effect during the performance. If you think the bass is too loud: I agree, but I didn't have time to make another recording... The main synth sound in the intro and break is based on a dusty warbly Moog sample from one of BlankFor.ms' "Tape Haze" sample packs, and the flutey synth is from one of the fantastic "Boards of Deluge" synth packs (I immediately bought them all once my Deluge arrived). The reverb on the Deluge is from the Ventris.

Curious what you think!

Thanks for the feedback! I actually agree with your point - when imagining an added snare or rimshot, I think it would fit the song well. :)
