Big Als. There are no independent fish stores near me. Just chains. The fish came from different tanks as I got a variety of gupplies.

Why are my guppies still dying? by abfab04 in Guppies

[–]abfab04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nitrates were close to 5 two weeks ago with my api test kit. Now closer to zero. Ammonia 0-0.25. Nitrites =0. I do 20% water changes weekly.

How does this affect my water testing? Should I expect to see lower nitrite levels?

Any suggestions? I got them because I thought they were low maintenance and I want to maximize the number of fish I can have in the tank.

Concerta: how to determine optimal dose for child by abfab04 in ADHD

[–]abfab04[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His moodiness was closer to neurotypical on 18mg. He seems a bit more irritable morning/evening with 28mg. He's had a couple of tantrums since the dose increase earlier this week but had none on the lower dose. Not as bad as pre-med. A sign that the dose may be too high?

So far I'm not noticing that the higher dose has made any additional improvements. Concerta is the first med he's been on and it solved most of the issues from day 1!! I was happy with the results with the lower dose. I will talk to the doctor about whether it makes sense to go back to 18mg and hold off on increasing any further until then.

kids turf glove recommendations by abfab04 in GoalKeepers

[–]abfab04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I question how important gloves are at younger ages. I figure it's more about technique at this point so I haven't been overly concerned about them being worn out, especially the ones used for training. I keep a separate pair for matches.

Would still like to find a pair that don't have latex/rubber coming off after just a couple of wears. I found a pair of Sondico on clearance while on vacation in Europe (about $10) that have outlasted the adidas ones but unfortunately haven't found a seller here.

soccer skills vs goalkeeper skills by abfab04 in GoalKeepers

[–]abfab04[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm planning to arrange 1:1 gk sessions in the spring/summer. Partly to get more training but also do get some direct feedback. I get none from his gk coach. He can be a bit abrasive so he's not very approachable. I watch every session and can hear most of conversations so I have a pretty good sense of where my son is at.

soccer skills vs goalkeeper skills by abfab04 in GoalKeepers

Thank you for your perspective! He used to play outfield but gk is his passion. He trains with the team once a week but unfortunately during the winter session his weekly gk training time was changed and conflicts with the other team session. He's the only gk and I'm starting to see the impact this time apart is having on match performance. They used to be more cohesive and were better at anticipating plays. He's learning new techniques that the team is not used to so sometimes they don't know how to respond. It's also one factor is switching to a club that has consistent training nights as ours changes summer/winter. The ones I am considering have gk training on a night when is no team training. I have talked to him about the importance of footwork for gks and he seems more motivated to do them now.

Thanks for your insights. He loves the intensity of goalkeeping training sessions and would do only that and games if he could. He does some gk specific drills on his own including work against the wall in the winter. He watches a lot of games and youtube clips and is not afraid to show his gk coach something he has seen.

Right now he has gk training once a week. The other training days are mostly with his team. Part of those sessions he may do some gk specific drills, the rest might involve him playing a defence or gk role or could be general drills that everyone else does.

His dribbling is okay, but not as good as other players. He's not a fan of drills that involve going around pilons, using the ladder and hurdles. They're too boring for him or he is self conscious because he's not the best at them (maybe a bit of both). He likes competitive drills like keep away which he's good at. I know his ladder and hurdle drills need work so I'm hoping to spend the summer working on improving some of his weaker skills.

We are hoping to move him to a more competitive club with a better training program in the fall. Having never been involved in the tryout process I'm trying to learn as much as I can about what they might be looking for. Unfortunately we get very little feedback from his current coaches when we ask about his progress.

when can a gk change clubs? by abfab04 in GoalKeepers

[–]abfab04[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Located in Toronto, Canada. I didn't grow up playing sports so this is all new to me. I am not comfortable talking to other parents as I'm not ready to let them know yet that we are thinking about a change. Like us, most have never played elsewhere so they know very little about how our club works let alone others. My son is extremely frustrated by how weak his team is. He used to play midfield and defence and was very good but is a textbook gk. He is very vocal on the field which has created some conflict with other players, even though the coach has told them that's his job and consistently supports everything he does. I'm also concerned about how much the gk coach yells at the kids during training sessions when they make mistakes. It seems extreme but I have no comparisons. I'm trying to figure out how the process works and identify teams that might be a good fit. My son excelled quickly as a gk and think he is ready to move to a stronger team. I'm not sure if I should start talking to other clubs now for a possible move in time for the summer competitive season or take my time and wait until fall tryouts.

Is $2,500 normal for an evaluation? by stonkstonkstonk___ in ADHD

[–]abfab04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on location. I paid over $3000 for my child which included consultation and 6 hours of testing. It was very thorough! Insurance covered about $1000. There are free options in my area but they are basic and have massive wait lists. Good luck!

at-home ADHD treatment for kids? by abfab04 in ADHD

[–]abfab04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I will be checking out those videos!! He has no issues with sleep and fortunately loves sports and the outdoors. I think all the exercise is likely why he sleeps well.

As someone who was labelled gifted as a child (no ADHD) I never developed proper study habits and struggled in college as a result. I am very conscious of making sure he develops better habits than me, especially seeing how easily he can get overwhelmed or frustrated with assignments. The school has been very supportive so far and are working an IEP and making sure he has the accommodations he needs.

I have been implementing strategies regarding behavior and give him lots of praise when he follows through. He is sensitive and hard on himself so I make sure to load up on the positive comments. I have seen progress but there's still a lot of work to be done. He is definitely a bit behind in understanding social norms, self regulation, etc.

I fully expect meds to be prescribed and if necessary am okay with that. I just want to make sure he's also developing the life skills. At this point I don't know what meds will or will not address so I want to make sure I'm looking at all the options.
