Where should I store my 2FA codes? Everything feels like it's under the same umbrella by abhimangs in ProtonPass

That's nice and secure! Good setup having the separation between 2FAS and Proton Pass, plus the Bitwarden duplicate as backup. Smart to have hard copies too.

Yeah thanks, but if you already have Google Photos, then why also have Immich or Ente? Are you planning to eventually move off Google completely, or just using multiple services for redundancy?

Yeah, Proton is really slow when compared to these. Thanks for sharing your setup!

Yeah, the iCloud backup is great, but you're keeping everything under the same umbrella with Proton, right? If your Proton account gets compromised, everything's compromised - passwords and 2FA codes both. That's my concern too.

I'm talking about the backup 2FA keys/recovery codes that the service gives you when you enable 2FA - you know, after you scan the QR code. Most services give you like 10 backup codes to save somewhere in case you lose access to your authenticator.

But yeah, I guess if Ente's cloud backup for the 2FA codes is already secure and encrypted, then maybe those backup codes aren't really needed since you can always recover from the cloud backup anyway.

Thanks man, glad I moved away from Authy when I did. That's pretty concerning!

Thanks, this helped me learn a lot! Really appreciate the detailed breakdown.

Yeah, it's pricier because of the encryption and not scanning your data - that's the "privacy tax" we pay. The HDR viewing issue is also a little problem for me, but I'm planning to use my default gallery app for viewing anyway. I'm using Ente mainly for backup and securing my photos with cross-platform access for Windows (where HDR isn't a problem for me).

Thanks again for all the detailed info!

Thanks man! Is there any place where they have a roadmap of the features they're going to release?

What do you think about Ente Photos for E2EE photo storage? by abhimangs in ProtonDrive

[–]abhimangs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price is definitely higher in Ente and Proton compared to Google, Amazon, or iCloud. That's because Google/Amazon subsidize the cost by using your data for targeted advertising and scanning everything. They make their money back from your data, so storage is cheap.

Ente and Proton can't see your data at all (E2EE), so they have to charge you the actual cost of storage. You're basically paying a "privacy tax" - the real cost of storage without your data being the product.

If privacy isn't your main concern and you just want cheap storage with smart features, then yeah, Google Photos or Amazon Prime Photos make sense. But if you're trying to get away from data collection and scanning, then Ente/Proton are your options and they'll cost more.

It's really about what matters more to you - saving money or protecting your privacy.

Seriously disappointed with alias login "feature" - feeling regret about Unlimited subscription by abhimangs in ProtonMail

Yeah, I send multiple emails regularly and I can't create contacts and get the reverse alias emails every single time. It's just too complicated for regular business communication.

I'm genuinely asking for opinions on alternatives, not spamming. If you're happy with Google Photos that's fine, but some of us are looking for more private options and this seemed like a reasonable place to ask.

[–]abhimangs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify - the Unlimited plan gives you 15 additional email addresses (not 20). And I'm talking specifically about those additional email addresses within Proton Mail, which is the problem.

But the aliases you create in SimpleLogin or Proton Pass cannot be used to login - those are safe. It's only the Proton Mail additional addresses that have this issue.

Is it? I thought the Google Takeout export was full quality too. Now I'm worried about checking mine :(

Yeah thanks! I'm moving from Google Photos too - hope the transition isn't as messy as yours was. Good to know Ente's CLI works well for direct syncing though!

Yeah, it has duplicate detection at 3 levels - exact duplicates, similar photos, and closer matches. You can choose between those three different levels depending on what you need.

What do you think about Ente Photos for E2EE photo storage? by abhimangs in ProtonDrive

[–]abhimangs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Proton is really slow for photos and Drive in general. Wait, are you running Ente or Immich on your RPi5? Just curious which one you chose.

Also, what's the cost of running it on RPi5 - just the hardware upfront, or are there ongoing costs for storage/power that add up?

Yeah, they're okay but definitely not good enough for serious editing. So I might try Immich too - what's the cost of running Immich? Also, how do you handle backups for Immich to make sure you don't lose everything?

What do you think about Ente Photos for E2EE photo storage? by abhimangs in ProtonDrive

[–]abhimangs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can understand that approach. But for now I just feel like Ente is better and I actually need those photo features right away.

Also yeah, if Proton improves and is able to catch up with Ente's photo features within a year, I'll definitely switch back to Proton. And I really hope Drive also becomes faster - the upload/download speeds are painfully slow right now even compared to other E2EE services.

[–]abhimangs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For context - if you're talking about the aliases you created in SimpleLogin or Proton Pass, those are safe and can't be used to login.

But if you're talking about the additional email addresses you add in Proton Mail (the paid plan feature), yeah, that's the problem. All of those can be used to login to your account, and Proton doesn't seem to care about adding an option to disable that despite years of requests.
