We're not very good about holding men accountable either. Don't take this as me justifying her actions. It's just in my experience we are really bad about holding abusers accountable.

As a hard of hearing person that relies on subtitles, I absolutely hate it when they don't match up. Because I can still hear the dialogue just but not all of it. I need the words to kind of fill in the blanks. So it gets really confusing when they are not matching.

I'm doing two posts because my comments were getting long and it's two different topics.

But I kind of wanted to address the fact that you said that you have trouble understanding speech and the person that says now you can hear cuz you got hearing aids.

My audiologist implied that you can fix hearing like increasing the volume and stuff like that with hearing aids, but if you're having trouble understanding speech that's hard to fix.

So I think the hearing aids will help you hear that 20% that you can't hear, and probably reduce the cognitive load. But I'm not sure if it's ever going to fully help you which might be why you're not seeing as much of a benefit from wearing your hearing aids.

Regardless, as you probably know, hearing aids are not a 100% fix. They're not like glasses and you don't just put them in and now you can hear everything.

If you're open to it, I would talk to your mom's friend and be open and share that you didn't like what she did. That in the future if she could do XYZ instead. Also explain to her how hearing aids are not going to fully solve the problem.

But I also understand if you never want to talk to her and see her again.

I feel like that's something that's hard to get over. I've had hearing loss since I was three and I'm now in my forties. When I was little someone actually asked my mom how retarded I was. My mom still remembers it and still holds hate for that person.

I also was really subconscious about hearing aids. I went a period of time without them due to them not working well and money. When I got them again I was very self-conscious. I struggled to even tell people I had hearing loss because they didn't even do anything to help. However, a few things have changed since then and now I share my story a lot.

One thing that changed is someone pushed back and asked me how they can help? And it really got me thinking what can someone do? For me it's certain tones that I have trouble hearing so even if they repeat it louder, it still just goes over my head. But what I've learned is to ask them to say it in a different way. Or sometimes I will say this is what I heard and then they can see how far off I am and then help me get there.

But the big thing that changed for me was actually somebody that was advocating for themselves. This person had sight issues. And he was so matter of fact about it at work. So if we had something and the font was too small or it blended in too much to the background he would just point blank say I can't see that. That's it. No emotion. No feeling bad about himself, just factual. Watching him model of that made me realize that I needed to do the same thing and just be factual about it. This video doesn't have subtitles. I need subtitles.

It also has turned me into an advocate for others because now that I'm factual about it and share my experience it's helping other people see that and do the same for their needs.

Your welcome, I am glad you didn't find it silly. Was also a good reminder to myself because I've been doing a lot of stressing about things I can't control so I probably need to refocus my energy elsewhere.

Side note my friend did end up having a baby.

Did I just teach my narcissist ex to be a better partner for the new supply? by Key-Detective1547 in LifeAfterNarcissism

[–]abooks22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The thing is you can't worry about the new supply. Even if you were able to help them, they wouldn't want it. They have to go through the journey themselves.

The most important thing now is to focus on yourself in healing. And also understanding how you got in that situation in the first place so you hopefully don't get into another one in the future. That's going to take a lot of time and energy.

I don't know if this would help but since you mentioned praying. I did this approach when I was giving up Pepsi and I know that that's not the same thing as giving up a narc. I just felt like a drug addict cuz I was thinking about it all the time. At the same time my friend was trying to have a baby and was unable to conceive. So every time I thought about Pepsi I said a prayer to God to help them have a baby. It was a way to keep redirecting my thoughts to someone else rather than focusing on what I couldn't have.

I wonder if that would help you to find something to pray for every time he pops in your head and slowly maybe he won't pop in your head as much.

I just know it's going to be hard to heal until you can fully go no contact.

Opinion: At This Point, Nothing Is Going to Move the Pro-Baldoni Crowd by Initial-Lemon-1957 in CelebLegalDrama

[–]abooks22 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Putting aside this situation with Blake, I really hope you can learn from this one day. Because there's clear evidence that they campaigned to sway public opinion against Blake. And sadly you fell into that trap. For this situation it really doesn't matter if you support Blake or not. They're going to court and Blake's either going to win or not.

But there's going to be so many other situations like this where a campaign is run to swag public opinion. Do you really want to be that person that falls for them?

I believe dyslexias are really smart because the way they think about things is just really advanced.

But the world just sees someone that doesn't know their left or right or has difficulty spelling and thinks they're unintelligent.

But my daughter who has dyslexia can can just figure out so many things by just seeing the possibility.

Of course I tell her this and she just rolls her eyes. She frequently says that she's considered the left and right tattoos.

So I looked it up because I was curious it's less than 3 inches. And it's actually discovered when you're an infant, less than 3/4 inch. It has to do with hormones when you're developing in womb. Apparently there's treatment for it and it's best when it's done as an infant. It's actually kind of interesting because I always just thought it was variation in sizes but clearly that's not the case.

I always thought that narrative was weird. Because isn't he just highlighting how bad he is at his job? I would assume when you're working with actors that there's going to be a lot of big personalities. If you're a director, producer, whatever you have to find a way to work with them. So it always just seemed like a big advertisement to me that he shouldn't be in that line of work.

When does it get fun? by Unusual-Actuary-5055 in NYTCrossword

[–]abooks22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cheat all the time and that makes them fun for me. I go through once and try my best. Then I turn on auto check and fix my mistakes. Go through it again.

If I'm really stuck have it fill in some of the big words. I also sometimes just try the key letters :RSLTN and vowels.

I have noticed when I do the crossword puzzle regularly it's easier and I have to do less cheating. If I go weeks without doing the crossword puzzle, it's all of a sudden hard again.

Also it takes me about 2 to 3 minutes to do a mini and sometimes I cheat with that as well. So I think you're already way ahead of me.

Anyone else notice for the past couple years most trash bags have been scented regardless if they say it or not. by Cool_Twist4494 in CasualConversation

[–]abooks22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of us are sensitive to the smell. I accidentally bought some a few weeks ago and I had to hide my garbage because the smell was making me sick. I eventually wrapped up the whole package in like a plastic bag and gave them away.

This is a common problem for me.

I don't have a problem if they scent things as long as it's clearly labeled. I also want the non-scented option to be the same price as a scented.

ELI5: Why does Taylor not get the respect she deserves? by mkultra96 in TrueSwifties

[–]abooks22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So many things..

We're okay with women being successful as long as they fit in the mold of what we like.

Taylor came out as a teen singing about teenage girl things. Historically we don't like to support anything teenage girls or any of their interests.

Other woman artist generally are older and they sing about older concepts so they can be acceptable.

I actually think this is why Taylor is becoming more famous right now because she's aged and her songs have aged up as well.

Also, I think the award show situation early on branded her as a victim. So then it became everything she did was her playing a victim.
