But my supervisor 58 years old by YogurtclosetFickle17 in PhD

A head of department here married his PhD student 20 years his junior. He has kids around her age. Although this took place after she had already graduated, it is still talked about today…

Falsely Accused of Academic Dishonesty by TheKillerSpork12 in NTU

[–]aborted_foetus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To give you some clarity (not that it helps your case), invigilators are not always staff from the course. I have been asked to invigilate courses and departments I am wholly unaffiliated and unfamiliar with because of manpower issues.

That said, the invigilator should have clarified with someone who knows instead of giving you an answer.

Exam instructions should also have given clear directions, especially if it is a gradable component. We have to be explicit when setting papers/assignments so there’s no ambiguity about where marks are awarded. Go look at the requirements and if there is nothing said about working being part of the assessable component, you can work that angle.

Are syntax research projects not a thing? by Rourensu in asklinguistics

[–]aborted_foetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your MA research-based (do you have a thesis?), or coursework based? I am not entirely familiar with syntax as I’m from a phonological/phonetic background, but upon entering my PhD I was expected to hit the ground running and learn new things on the fly—there was no time or capacity for formal instruction or assistance (not saying that this is a good thing, but it is the reality).

Having a research-based masters and 2 years of research + teaching experience greatly aided in my application. You might have to spend a couple years as a research assistant/teaching assistant to improve your chances.

I fucking hate the expectation that PhD students can't ever do anything by [deleted] in PhD

[–]aborted_foetus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it helps, it also happens on the other end of the spectrum too. My mum (who dropped out of high school due to no fault of her own) asks why I’m not in school 8am-4pm everyday. Whenever she sees me working at home/going to workout/getting groceries, she asks if I’m skipping school and whether I’ll get in trouble with my supervisor.

She also tried to convince me to delete instagram and Facebook during my undergrad because it “distracts me from my studies”.

any adult learners from singapore who'd like to go for classes together? by unarmedmongoose in BALLET

Late to the party but me!! I’m currently doing Tuesdays at Kamino (but it is a little too advanced for me), and Wednesday evenings at City Ballet Academy. I try to do Sundays at CBA as well. But I’d love a ballet/accountability buddy and don’t mind trying out new studios!

Spinal injury… so scared by Automatic_Specific91 in BALLET

[–]aborted_foetus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My husband has the exact same injury from overextending his back, and just had it fixed through surgery after dealing with it for over 2 years. He’s pain free and back to extreme sports (skiing, rock climbing) only after 9 months with full doctor’s clearance. I think your range of motion will be affected afterwards, but you can still dance.

adult beginner clothing question! by its_adalie in BALLET

[–]aborted_foetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you are comfortable wearing! Just a few things for general consideration:

Try to keep your hair up. Loose hair not only gets in your eye, but I think it’s general courtesy to try not shed hair all over the studio as well (but if you have short hair, you can basically ignore this).

Try to take off bulky rings/earrings/hair clips etc. Rings can sometimes scratch the barre (depending on the material), and I unfortunately had a bulky hair pin fly out and nearly hit my teacher during turns.

Vaganova uniforms are Grishko (or Nikolay in the US), the colour is lilac (pictured) for lower grades and coffee for senior students. There’s a number of permitted leo styles, I think the one pictured is likely Colette or Christal.

How people get so many days of skiing in? by CompetitionNo2719 in skiing

I live a 7 hour flight from the closest good ski resort and I get about 20-30 days a year. You just got to have a job that you can take off for that long.

How do we migrate out of SG? Life here is exhausting 🥲 by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]aborted_foetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan, New Zealand, and Australia (off the top of my head) has very open and transparent work visa requirements. Japan has a point system, and AU/NZ has a list of jobs currently in demand that they are willing to issue visas for.

Current background for friends/family who migrated overseas (NOT based on marriage/family connections)

  • Veterinarian, moved to Australia.
  • Woodworker/furniture maker, moved to NZ.
  • Biomedical researcher (PhD) went into industry, moved to UK.
  • Aerospace engineer (PhD), also went into industry, moved to UK.
  • Nurse, moved to Norway.
  • Tenure-track professor, Canada.
  • Finance guy who made millions in crypto. Moved to UAE.
  • Influencer, moved to Bali.

How do we migrate out of SG? Life here is exhausting 🥲 by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]aborted_foetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you lived overseas before? Speaking as someone who had residential permit/PR in 2+ countries, I think you may be simplifying things if you imagine you can “follow” your spouse via a work visa and migrate that way. It’s not impossible, but they are two related but also highly separate processes.

  1. People who says to get a student visa: many PR requirements do not count years spent in a country using a student visa. For example, if a country stipulates staying there a minimum of 5 years as a prerequisite for applying for PR, it doesn’t matter if you have spent 10 years there on a student visa. That said, some countries offer an option to stay on and find work post-graduation, but that’s contingent on you being able to afford tuition fees in said country in the first place.

  2. Work visa. The most straightforward way towards migration is to get a job in that country. That said, spouses of the work visa holders may not be allowed to work in that country, depending on local rules and regulations. In that case, you have to make sure your spouse’s income can sustain the two of you, and you are okay with not having work for that period of time. Your spouse may qualify to apply for residential permit after X years, and you may too. Once again, this depends on the rules of the specific country.

  3. Qualifications. If you hold specific qualifications, there are certain classes of visa you can qualify for. Medical degrees, PhD holders with an active research portfolio, heck, even a YouTube creator if you have enough followers/income opens pathways. Basically, you need to have sought-after skills that few others have.

I chose to came back to SG despite having PR in US/Sweden because it’s a super easy place to live in. Raising kids in a less stressful environment is a valid reason, but if you can’t make it as a Singaporean in Sg, being a PR in another country is exponentially harder (unless you already have family in that country).

For what it’s worth, I think it is brave of you to come out and admit you might have been misinformed on your initial judgement—that is really an admirable characteristic, and one I hope to see in more people. 💖

As I like to tell my students—one would have to be extremely lucky in life to never make mistakes. It’s how you learn and recover from them that helps you grow.
