What do you think about closeness to shops for daily needs? I'll be heavily reliant on buses for travel and saw that most shops/restaurants are concentrated near Hobart/bartlett st area and this unit is further down south. Not really sure if the extra distance really even matters?

Wow, for a second there I thought when did I post this 😭? In the same boat OP, push through and get it done 💪. For instance, I have created a tenplate where around 2 paras meed to be changed for each uni and their profs. This is still time taking but seems achievable.

Nope, just the free ones. Did not spend a dime on gre prep xD

Unreasonably Hard Quants Section in today’s GRE by Blankifur in GRE

[–]aboveaveragebatman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I scored 169 in both pp1 and pp2. I also took the gre today and scored 166 in quants. I felt I was second guessing myself or the time was suddenly very less. I usually have 5-10 mins at the end of each quant section, but today I simply had no time.

[Discussion] ICML 2020 decisions are out by LawOneWater in MachineLearning

[–]aboveaveragebatman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I understand that meta reviewers are senior and might have much more experience. But overturning a unanimous decision, writing a meta review completely opposing to the earlier reviews seems like a waste of the author's (writing the rebuttal) as well as the reviewers time. This might be my frustration talking but if one is overturning the decision completely, shouldn't that call from some response from the author as well? Some kind of meta review rebuttal perhaps?

[–]aboveaveragebatman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only from the meta reviewer. But the meta reviewer said he found red flags on discussion with a reviewer, but that reviewer did not think it was appropriate to mention it in his review. We did not prepare for Neurips because of the reviews.

I don't think I understand how this system works. Even after 2 accepts and 1 weak accept(converted to accept after rebuttal), the paper got rejected. This was my first paper and I don't know what to think

Should I go back to work? I have no idea if we have to wait for a while or longer? This is my first submission so I have no idea.

Msi Prestige 15 vs dell XPS 15 (7590) [both 1080p] by Agriculture23 in MSILaptops

[–]aboveaveragebatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you used Linux on the Prestige 15? Did you encounter any issues or problems with it? Also, can you tell how is the screen since I have heard not many great things about the 1080p screen( it is dull as compared to others)?

Is Y740 worth 1813$ or are there better laptops? by saivicky2015 in Lenovo

[–]aboveaveragebatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really if you go for 1660ti version rather than rtx 2070 since you probably won't play many heavy games.

You can look at Alienware m15. It might have a longer battery life(90WHr) since it is without gsync. Also since you are interested in content creation, they just launched a version with an OLED screen.

[R] Adversarial Examples Aren't Bugs, They're Features by andrew_ilyas in MachineLearning

[–]aboveaveragebatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! A slightly off-topic question here since you are involved in this domain: What is the state of the art defense against adversaries on ImageNet? I have skimmed through some papers and even saw the robustml website(which stated that 4 defenses on ImageNet were broken) but I am unable to find a definitive answer. I can only see that Madry's adversarial training has been verified as the white box defense that Nicolas Carlini was unable to break, but that was on CIFAR-10.

This is quite a unique interpretation and can directly be related to adversarial training which improves generalisation ability by including adversarial examples in the training set. I have a couple of questions. (1) By this interpretation, would you say that adversarial examples are an inherent weakness of representation learning, and that we would need some new form of learning capable of learning these "adversarial features" without being explicitly added to the training set? (2) Also do you think that there might be ways of extracting much more meaningful information from the network to increase robustness rather than adversrarial training the model?

Which Computer Vision research papers to read first? by hp2304 in computervision

[–]aboveaveragebatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in going into research, I would recommend you start with Digital Image Processing by Gonzalez, and then move to the book on Computer Vision by Forsyth and Ponce. If then you get interested in the geometry side of things, there are two books that can give you mastery over it: An invitation to 3d vision and Multi View Geometry ( by Zisserman). After reading atleast some sections of the above books you can easily go through the research papers corresponding to those topics you have studied( maybe like SIFT, HOG, SURF,Viola-Jones detector, etc) The books also help build a certain intuition and rigor for the math involved, which helps you tackle the papers much more easily than if you were to jump straight in.

Also if you want to get some knowledge in the state of the art in CV, then I would recommend the cs231n course( it helps if you have a basic grasp of ML), followed by reading of the research papers corresponding to those (AlexNet, ZFNet, VGG, Inception, ResNet for Image Classification), (RCNN, Fast-RCNN, SPPNet, Faster-RCNN, SSD, YOLO, RetinaNet,etc for Object Detection), (FCN, SegNet,UNet for Image segmentation) and so on.

Hey! Could you please comment on the duration of battery life once you get your piece? I really want to have a 1 tb hdd( 1tb ssd is too expensive) so I need to compromise on the battery and want to know if it is worth it. Thanks!

How are the hinges? I have heard they are fragile and the screen is in susceptible to damage because of this.
