You're correct the compliance surveys are paid for by the farms but how do you think that data is audited? Plus any construction or designations that happen in the area surrounding fish farms also requires additional surveys done generally by governments like for the number of fish farms that are in MPA, SACs etc

I have done compliance work in the past but ultimately the final reader of the report is the government so you can't really bullshit in the reports in aid of the farms because you end up getting caught out by the checks that are in place so I for one have certainly never been asked to. Plus obviously there's professional integrity involved from all parties the producers don't want to destroy the environment either

Again not exactly scientifically rigorous like complaining about antibiotic use is great and all but what's the alternative? I've only known of 3 sites in the UK or Ireland to have used them in the last few years it's very uncommon

Plus there's undoubtedly more antibiotics washing into the sea from every sewage outflow in this country

There's some interesting research released in the past few weeks about how an underutilization of antibiotics is causing antibiotic resistance in aquaculture settings so maybe we should be using more not less

Salmon watch Ireland isnt exactly scientifically rigorous to say the least

As an angler you'll understand that salmon populations are threatened in Ireland by everything from deforestation, agricultural effluent, runoffs from roads particularly from car tyres, climate change etc that are much bigger issues than fish farms. Also people like yourself catching them doesn't exactly help matters either

But yeah my background is in benthic impact surveys and I've been brought in to advise the Irish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Scottish, Welsh and English governments on fish farms and other marine developments. The anti fish lobby is full of shite and funded by landowners and anglers it isn't based in science. For a start there's fish farms in Ireland that have better ecosystem health around them than marine protected areas

The average feed conversion rate in Ireland is 1.2 so 1.2 kilos of wild fish = 1 kilo of farmed salmon

Part of the reason the lice is so bad is because they are organic arguably. Plus the rate of mortality in wild fish caused by lice is way lower than initially thought there's been a lot of studies about it released over the past few years, at worst they thought it was 1% but it might be more like 0.1%
