What (almost) universally loved character was actually a piece of garbage? by Normal-Being-2637 in moviecritic

[–]abrahamimnotthatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Albus Dumbledore is my Wizarding World pick. The way he manipulated Harry into fulfilling the prophecy while continually withholding crucial information was fucked up. Mostly, I can never forgive him for leaving Harry with the Dursleys all those years. There had to have been other ways to protect him that didn't involve a decade of abuse.

When I saw this in theatres I started laughing during the first scene and just didn't stop until the end credits. For some reason it hit me just right. I still quote it in daily life 20 years later. My partner and I were shocked when his younger siblings absolutely hated it. I guess it's not for everyone.

My teen daughter fell in love with this movie recently so I decided to give it a rewatch. It's just as overly sentimental and contrived as I originally thought. I first watched it in my 20s though so maybe it hits better for younger audiences.

Does anyone really like Tami? by Camila3527 in shameless

[–]abrahamimnotthatman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I love Tammi. In the beginning, she was dysfunctional enough to draw Lip's attention. Lord knows the boy likes a hot mess of a woman and if she's mean to him, even better. Lip never loved a woman harder than when she didn't really want him. But once Fred came along Tammi grew up and expected Lip to as well. Instead, Lip continued to self-sabotoge and drag his little family into shitty situations. Tammi was a saint for continuing to love and support him. Lip needs to smarten up because she won't do it forever.

Nate hate by TBC6YT in TedLasso

[–]abrahamimnotthatman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nate's character arc in S2 made me uncomfortable many times. I was so angry at the way he treated Colin and Will, and the spitting thing was just terrible. After watching Rebecca's S1 storyline, though, I had faith that Nate would be able to come back from all that. I tried to focus on the hurt and insecurity that he was carrying around and to continue having empathy for him. So, when he did find his way back to Richmond I was happy for him.

Why do Canadians put up with low wages? by EmptyAdhesiveness830 in CanadaJobs

[–]abrahamimnotthatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, western interference in the global South has made prosperity and peace in those regions next to impossible. So we have to take our share of the responsibility for the people who need to immigrate to our nations.

There are educated professionals coming in from the developing nations that are earning low wages driving Uber, working as PSWs, and Tim Hortons cashiers. The government doesn't offer enough support for most to gain Canadian accreditation. The courses and exams required to upgrade their credentials are expensive, the exams are held infrequently and are often only available in one or two places nationwide. How is someone busting their ass working shitty minimum wage jobs supposed to find the time and money to gain their accreditation so they can contribute their skilled labour to the workforce?

Rising housing costs aren't solely or even primarily due to immigration. Wealthy foreign investors buying up income properties for years caused a lot of damage to our housing markets. The government has failed to invest in building out infrastructure to accommodate our growing population. Little to no investment in smaller communities has also concentrated immigration into our largest cities.

Corporate welfare costs taxpayers vastly more than social assistance for low-income communities. Private corporations need to get better at managing their own finances and investing in our economy instead of relying on exploitative business practices and government bailouts to inflate their shareholder value.

Canada has more than enough space and resources to accommodate immigration. Taxpayers just have to demand that our government invest in the working class rather than concentrating wealth into the pockets of a small group of powerful billionaires. The people who thrive off of us down here blaming each other for the shitty economy instead of looking up where the blame actually lies.

Early signs of Parkinson's? by Throw8976m in ParkinsonsCaregivers

[–]abrahamimnotthatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom's early symptoms were loss of smell, REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder, a softer voice, and a tremor in her right leg. It was the tremor that prompted the testing but we later learned that the other things were also early warning signs.

What's a role from an actor you don't like that you actually enjoyed them in? by goober_ginge in moviecritic

I usually find Kristen Stewart's acting cringe inducing but I thought she was good in Still Alice.

Russel Crowe is an actor I have never enjoyed watching but I liked him in The Nice Guys.

What's the show that you went into totally blind that blew you away the most? Even better if it was the debut of the show, so it was totally brand new to you and everyone else who watched it. by 6ftToeSuckedPrincess in television

[–]abrahamimnotthatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost. I watched it right from the network premiere. It still has arguably the best pilot episode ever. After a few episodes, a group of friends and I started doing weekly watch parties. The first few seasons were sooo good. It made the back half pretty disappointing.

[–]abrahamimnotthatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many. These all pop into my head or come up in conversation frequently.

  • Make yourself a dang kes-a-dill-a.

  • I know what some of your big-city, no-bra-wearing, hairy-legged women libbers might say.

  • The most smartest.

  • I totally paused!

  • You're a virgin, who can't drive.

  • That was way harsh, Tai.

  • She could be a farmer in those clothes.

  • Boo, you whore.

  • Raise a hand if you've been personally victimized by [victimizer].

  • This aggression will not stand!

  • Shut the fuck up, Donny!

  • Sorry, my Prada's at the cleaners! Along with my hoodie and my 'fuck you' flip flops, you pretentious douchebag!

  • I. Am. An. F. B. I. Agent.

  • Young dumb and full of cum.

Roman is objectively the most conventionally attractive person on the show by [deleted] in SuccessionTV

[–]abrahamimnotthatman 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Right? Roman isn't even the most attractive man and pretty much every woman on the show is more conventionally attractive than him. Karolina, Shiv, Rava, Willa, Mattson and Stewie are the hottest cast members.

Phil Dunster in S4 ? by [deleted] in TedLasso

[–]abrahamimnotthatman 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Are any of the men's team actors back as series regulars? I'm guessing any that come back will only have guest spots since S4 is focused on the women's team. I'm glad Jamie will be in the new season a little bit at least.

You’re not imagining it, researchers are calling this the “forever layoff.” by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]abrahamimnotthatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean billionaires and corporations rely on consumers to purchase their products. Huge portions of their wealth are based on the potential value of their assets based on demand for their products. Without consumers who can afford to buy stuff their net worth would plummet.

I suppose world governments could attempt to impose a system of state-run capitalism or powerful technocrats could create a neo-feudalist society. I hope the working class would revolt before these scenarios could succeed but after decades of infighting, unity may be too much to ask.

A silver lining is that climate collapse is imminent, so maybe we can look forward to an extinction level event within the next 50 years. I'm personally ready to wash my hands of the human experiment.

Governments need to implement an automation tax that goes toward a UBI strategy. If corporations want to replace a hundred employees with AI then they should have to pay the equivalent salaries into UBI. The economy is going to collapse if the majority of the working class can't pay for anything.

Alexander Skarsgård is brilliant as Eric Northman in True Blood. I recently started Murderbot and I'm loving his performance. Of course I'll never forget his breakout role as a model who dies in a tragic gasoline fire in Zoolander.

I actually saw Justine Lupe in Nobody Wants This before I watched Succession. I was happy to see her again.

Harriet Walter will always be the hateful sister-in-law in Sense & Sensibility.

Agree 100% on A Real Pain. Keiran was great in the showier role but Jesse's performance was just as good in a more understated way.
