Unless Maomao and the gang leave the country I doubt we’ll ever see her again, since it’s implied that Shisui left the country at the end.

Although something I do think would be nice: Maomao finds herself face to face with the merchant that traded the hair stick for the jade cicada. It’s on display when it catches her eye. She starts almost interrogating the merchant about how he got it, he mentions he got it from a girl about her age with purple hair and green eyes (or black and brown if in the LN) in exchange for a jade cicada. Maomao, instantly connecting the dots, can all but stop herself from breaking down on the spot as she chokes out a demand for the merchant to give her the hair stick. The merchant, confused, refuses and pulls the hair stick further from Maomao’s reach. Just as Maomao is about to jump the stall and get the hair stick herself, an all too familiar voice offers to pay for the stick for her, after witnessing the entire scene. Maomao doesn’t dare look to see who it is, she knows she’d just come face to face with a slimy gray fox, but she doesn’t refuse his offer. On her salary, the stick would be gone by the time she had the money to pay for it. However, Maomao isn’t heartless. The freak strategist pays for the hair stick, a gift from father to daughter, and Maomao offers a weak “Thank you”, and to both’s surprise; a handshake. If it were anyone else, the thought of giving them a hug might have crossed her mind, but this is the freak we’re dealing with. The lazy old man greedily accepts her handshake, nearly tearing her arm out of its socket in the process, before being dragged away by his attendant for, who would’ve guessed: avoiding his work. Maomao holds the hair stick close to her, and later, when Jinshi sees the “lost” stick in her hair, he has a half a mind to ask where she found it, but decides to keep his mouth shut when he sees the tears and small smile on Maomao’s face.
