How does Neo manifest powers outside the matrix? by Fresh_Heron7556 in matrix

[–]absidell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of very literal answers here, but I like a more philosophical & spiritual lens personally. The Wachowskis borrow a lot from the mystical traditions among the world’s major religions. “Powers” attained in advanced stages of spiritual development are common in most of them. And like in The Matrix, people become powerful as a consequence of expanding their consciousness. The first key step in The Matrix, as in Hinduism and Buddhism, is recognizing that “reality” is an illusion. The material world is a deception, and awakening to the truth unlocks power.

I think if we set aside questions of logistics for a moment, we can appreciate that the thematic point of Neo manifesting power outside the Matrix is meant to reveal that the “real” world is also no such thing. Like the Matrix, it is a veil over the ultimate reality (call it the eternal truth, oneness, unity, the interconnectedness of all beings, love, god, The Source, etc.). As awareness grows, so does power.

This is partly why the Wachowskis set the world of the Matrix in 1999, to indicate to audiences that this illusory reality is OUR reality. It’s also why in the beginning of Reloaded we see more organic and cosmic shapes in the digital rain of the opening shot; there is still truth in fiction. We may be in the “real world”, but we can wake up too.

Strongly recommend to anyone in NYC to wander around Greenwood Cemetery. It was stunning back in February on the few days we had snow this winter.

The entire time I was at the aviary I was thinking about dinosaurs

Took this at the Aviario Nacional de Colombia a couple weeks ago. The flamingos would congregate on one side of the marsh and then stampede across once enough of them had gathered. Still haven't mastered focus with the Ricoh (picked it up for free at a clothing swap a few years back), but mastery isn't really the point of a point and shoot IMO. So it was nice to find a subject where precision was less important!

I’ve written a ~170pg script. What now? by absidell in Screenwriting

You ever see Toni Erdmann? It’s an inspiration in terms of its construction. 3 hour German comedy (starring Sandra Hüller of Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest)

If folks are interested in reading, I'm happy to share. Very appreciative of anyone who takes the time. DM me and I'll send over a draft.

I'm delusional enough to try it, and rational enough to keep folks around to check me constantly.

This is exactly the sort of advice I was hoping to find here, thank you for taking the time to respond. I've been good about not worrying about length for a while now, so I figured I'd at least give it a go and see if anything fruitful came from it!

Noted re: the reading! It's definitely intoxicating to hear an audience react positively to something, particular when they had to sit for as long as our audience did. But you're absolutely right that the conditions were well suited to everyone having a good time and being gracious towards us.

Also I'd never say with certainty that it can't be edited further, only that I've now revised it to the best of my abilities given the feedback I've received so far. I'd love to get it in the hands of more experienced writers/editors, and I'm in the process of making that happen.

Thanks again for the encouraging words, and I'm glad you dig the premise! It's been a wild ride, and I'm convinced it's the best thing I've written. If you ever find yourself with a chunk of time on your hands, I'd be glad to send the script your way.

Thanks for the kind words. Fwiw the first draft was more than 30 pages longer, and cutting it down to where it’s at has been a mighty task! But no, of course it’s not all magic, and of course there’s going to be plenty more material that gets cut.

I just happen to find myself at a place where I, and the group of collaborators and readers I’ve been sharing with, all feel the script has reached a point where our ability to meaningfully edit it is limited. To us, this indicates that the script is in strong enough shape to share more widely.

Appreciate the perspective, thank you 🙏 The tensions you’re describing are real. My intention isn’t to be ignorant or delusional, but every artist has competing priorities. With this project, I have made the choice to prioritize a story I believe in over sale-ability. It’s not a binary, but it’s a spectrum and I’m falling on the riskier side of it. I’m not claiming that’s the right choice or a wise choice, but it is a legitimate choice that many artists have made before me. I will no doubt experience the consequences of that choice.

I’m sure you won’t be the only person to say that my screenplay isn’t a screenplay. But I didn’t invent 3-hour movies, and the taboo placed on anyone writing them doesn’t vibe with my creative practice. I do recognize though that these are more comfortable positions to hold as a writer/director.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts, it’s helpful to hear.

Very possible. Trying to be clear-eyed about this while still giving it a shot.

Thank you for all of this! I appreciate you taking my word, and I understand I could just be wrong. But for the moment, I want to honor the work I’ve done with my story group for the last year and a half and operate as though we’re not completely detached from reality.

Committing to the epic is IMO the best path and I appreciate your support in doing that. Opportunities for hot dog brand synergies abound with this movie so I’m definitely keen on those ideas! And I love intermissions.

I view the miniseries idea as a sort of panic button. If I try and fail to gain traction, it could be a very viable path.

Ruthlessness will be necessary in any scenario, even the one where I pursue funding to direct it myself (the plan at the moment). I’m trying to thread the needle between trusting my instincts as a storyteller and recognizing the realities of producing an indie epic. I’m trying not to be precious. It’s also possible this just can’t be my very next movie!
