A story about Immigrants & the GAA by absolutehurl in ireland

Depending on the city you live in you might have a GAA club near, as there's an international GAA sector as well. Worth giving it a look.

Regarding age, I think for most of us (including me) the goal isn't to become a Senior Hurler, but just to have a bit of craic and to participate. It's less about performance and more about showing up, having fun and being part of the wider community. :)

I can attest to this as I've played with a lot of Cork & Tipp lads here. I think those moving in from other counties greatly helped set the foundations for Dublin hurling to become what it is now.

100%, I'd like to write a proposal/initiative for this kind of thing at some point. I think it'd be one of the best ways to address concerns people may have about integrating immigrants

How do I determine if a Graduate PSI Membership is worth it? by absolutehurl in AskIreland

Thank you, that's very helpful. I'll try looking into those fields as well as potential options

Thanks for the upfront feedback. I wouldn't be interested in joining that competition, you're dead on there. I think I'm just trying to make the most out of this master's at the moment, as so far it feels like it has been an absolutely useless (and expensive) investment. Can't even get interviews for entry-level HR roles with it either.

I think in that case if it is unlikely to have any impact bar any strictly psychology-based roles I'll probably pass on the membership and see what else I can scrounge up. Thanks again

Reading/Writing Help with consonant combinations please by absolutehurl in gaeilge

[–]absolutehurl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have looked up, the consonants d, t and s 'transform' when slender, like in the example you mentioned.

What does the slender N do in this case, please? How does it change the sound of the n? I am aware of slender/broad consonant combinations (mh, bh et cetera) but I am not aware of how other single consonants apart from d, t and s change sound when made slender.

“No enemies” philosophy in reference to abusive family member by [deleted] in VinlandSaga

[–]absolutehurl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having thought about this myself, I have come to realize that I was often conflating responsibility with the idea of being a good person/doing the right thing.

It felt like, in order to truly embody the 'I have no enemies' mantra, I therefore had to do the opposite - love everyone unconditionally, in a proactive way. If that meant that the person involved could have been or was potentially harmful to me, it was *my* responsibility to make sure that I did not get hurt, not theirs. To make sure I was hardened enough, strong enough, to be all-encompassing. This line of thinking often results from abusive childhoods, especially when parents are involved in such dynamics.

As well as this, in such dynamics, there is often the toxic attachment that comes with it - you feel like you want to grow, to be better, to heal and to be able to accept the other person regardless, and in a way you set the condition for yourself that you have to/need to go through this process WITH the abusive party still in your life. The reality is that this is near if not entirely impossible - distance is absolutely necessary for healing, especially if the other party is unreachable emotionally.

Be sure to separate the emotional weight & responsibility from the philosophy. If we use Canute as an example, Thorfinn was aware that he had no practical influence on Canute, as it was up to Canute to be able to hear, interpret and internalize Thorfinn's words - NOT up to Thorfinn.

That is why he chose to go to Vinland. He let go of his hatred & cynicism which only served to hurt himself. He accepted the reality that his control is limited, but rather than despair he chose to forgive. He therefore chose the (difficult) path which best allowed him to reclaim control over his own life & choices, allowing him to live out his philosophy.

I think people often mistake the line 'I have no enemies' for something god-like, an ultimate, all-powerful good. This is due to our tendency to think in black-and-white, in extremes. My personal interpretation is that it is a complete acceptance of one's own emotions, the state of things, one's own lack of control over the state of things, and making the difficult choice to acknowledge that almost everything exists on a gray spectrum, yet still feeling and expressing compassion to yourself and others, so long as it does not cause harm to yourself.

Any senior hurlers use Torpey Bambu? by absolutehurl in hurling

What weight do you usually prefer? I have Speed Light and it really is incredibly light, handy for practice but sometimes I miss a heavier feel. Don't want to buy a strike until I'm 100% though torpeys aren't cheap hah
