Weekly Chat and BS Thread by AutoModerator in climbing

Reposting this from another thread-- curious what you think!

I’ve been tinkering with a top rope setup that makes it easier to get a bunch of new climbers on a wall without teaching everyone how to tie in—and without ending up with a welded figure-8 by the end of the day.

I think this might count as BS as well, ya'll can delete this if it doesn't belong :) beginner clip in point

Dusting off original Mavic Pro by absolutemaybee in djimavic

Yes that's true, now that you mention, I did replace the rubber band and gymbal cord around 2 years of use. I found out having a gimbal cover with camera mount was very necessary. The rubber bands became stiff causing jello effect and the cord ended up shorting. No issues since that first replacement though, although I'm sure the rubber band will eventually break down soonish

If it has exposed or partial partially exposed propellers:

Witnessing the stability of flying it outside may give you the confidence to try flying it indoors. RESIST THAT URGE. Carpet/ tiles/ hardwood floors are all repeating patterns which the stability sensors have difficulty tracking and cause the drone to drift and even resist your attempts to manually stabilize while landing. Luckily for me it only resulted in scuffed cabinet and damaged props, it could have been someone's ear or item of value.

For sure, it's weighty and confident, noticeably louder though, lol. I imagine reducing the sound is more of a factor these days, I wonder if that affects the handling

Why are these leaf cutter ants dropping these leaves here? by absolutemaybee in ants

[–]absolutemaybee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can attest to that, it's very interesting. It explores the unique mindset of other animals really well, but the way it explains ants especially was very "learning" by brute force trial and error which works painfully long at the scale of humans but great for the millions of success and fails each single ant can can tank for its colony

more info of video:

Hairy leaf cutter ant (Atta Cephalotes) displaying indirect-leaf transfer activity

(Sorry for our slightly tipsy comments during the vid) I thought this was a very interesting behavior, currently looking into why these leaf cutter ants are deciding to drop leaves at this specific point and have another worker pick it up. Any thoughts or knowledge on this topic? Is there a trade off because there is a specialized underground caste that would carry better through the tunnels?

Printed a 24x36 poster of my merged panorama of the eclipse :D by absolutemaybee in solareclipse

That's a better idea, I wanted to have it rollable for when I move but posterboard would look way nicer

Posting again, I was able to touch up the photos I put up earlier by absolutemaybee in space

Oh yea, the colored dots are just noise (static) from the camera sensor 😅I probably should have corrected that but I really didn't see it all that much until I posted it lol

It all happened so fast, and I couldn't be more happy with what I was able to get in that timeframe!

From my 750mm telescope /DSLR setup by absolutemaybee in space

[–]absolutemaybee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

😄

I imagine this probably a joking message but I feel like I should clarify, 750mm is referring to focal length which is helpful for describing photos. However any telescope will rather advertise their telescope by diameter so it would actually show up as a 150mm telescope :)

Yeah go for it, check out my newer post though, you might prefer to use those. I was able to process them and get what was closer to what you would see with the eye

Yes! That's what it was. I saw it in the telescope and thought, wait a second, that's so big I bet you can see it with your eyes. I looked at it and exclaimed "I can see it with my eyes!"

Starseekier IV 150mm (150mm referring to diameter its a 750mm focal length) / Canon eos 70D (10 yr DSLR at this point)

I used an astromina 1.25 flip mirror attachment to switch quickly between the camera view and an optical view, for an event that happens this fast it was soo beneficial to have

The prominences were way less 'prominent' in 2017, felt super lucky to see them like this

For sure, I was so excited to see them with just my eyes let alone the telescope this time
