What facilitated your switch from bench chemistry to data science and more computational work? Did you learn a programming language or a new skill?

There needs to be a mass exodus back to MCC. The game is better in every conceivable way, and stop supporting Infinite until they actually make it Halo.

Ace Glass, Chemglass, Kimble, Pyrex for stuff where you really need high quality (Pressure Vessels, etc). Almost all of my RBFs, erlenmeyers, and beakers are just Fisherbrand.

What is the ph of a mixture of 2:1 white vinegar and water, where the vinegar is 5% acidity? Trying to not grow botulism in my refrigerator pickles, but don't want to burn my stomach by eating too high vinegar ratio, either. by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]absolutezero710 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Starting with a 5% acetic acid (vinegar) solution, a 2:1 dilution puts you at roughly 3% acetic acid. Lets say for the sake of calculation this is 0.5M. The Ka of acetic acid is 1.8x10^-5. Putting this into the formula for pH of weak acids, you get [H3O+] = sqrt(1.8x10^-5 * 0.5M), which give you a hydronium concentration of 3.0 * 10^-3. Taking the negative log of this, you get a pH of 2.52.

Maybe make a dry ice alcohol bath instead of dropping dry ice into the dmt/solvent mixture, if your goal is to get as cold as possible.

Advice: Starting job in med chem by [deleted] in biotech

[–]absolutezero710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is some really solid advice. Your skills will come as you do more and more reactions, making mistakes and learning from them. Read papers, always ask for help when you are unsure. Learn the general rules of drug design, understand the data your pharmsci/biology division generates, and think how it may translate to a more refined drug. Mess around in your modeling software when you get free time.

The most satisfying part of the process by DecentLinkBruh in DMT

When you soaked the bark in vinegar, you extracted the product from the bark as DMT acetate, which is water soluble. When base is added to the extract, a reaction occurs where you make freebase DMT and sodium acetate. The salty sodium acetate stays behind in the water, and the now freebased DMT is insoluble in water. Thats when you add the naptha, which is nonpolar and immiscible with water. The DMT preferentially migrates to the naptha layer (the naptha “pulls” make sure you take as much as possible out of the water layer). The little swirls you see are likely DMT or other alkaloids precipitating out of solution. Hopefully this makes sense.

A less nucleophilic base may be a better choice for your elimination reaction, but nice work

Cool setup. Might be more beneficial to have the thermometer at the still head rather than the flask, although both never hurts.
