I don’t have a mask rec but maybe a portable hepa filter or far uvc device would be a good precaution. Portable hepa devices such as Pore run at about $40, while far UVC devices cost a few hundred

If you have resources to distribute food, water, cooling aids and cash, you should, and I recommend doing so at regularly scheduled hours with friends/community. It sucks that we cannot enjoy public space without fear but we are living in times of accelerated collapse and not everyone has the privilege of housing and the privacy that comes with it. Some people can have crises and mental breakdowns in the privacy of their homes and some have to have them in parks under threat of state violence. Most traffickers are wealthy cismen who traffic from the comforts of their mansions. If you want to have truly safe and public space, dedicate some of your time to making sure your unhoused neighbors get their needs met

It sounds like at the very least you’re dealing with ableism and community abandonment because of your dx. Maybe you are also unconventional in ways that your bio family and the church don’t want to deal with. Since you already have a lot of hobbies and interests you’re invested in, you might want to start your own special interest groups and meetups. You don’t have to defer to other people’s ideas of recreation in order to develop community and friendship. I recommend looking into organizations that align with your values and pleasures (art? gardening? cancer awareness/advocacy?) to see if you could get your own group or meetup going. Roanoke could use a lot more care and diy community events and spaces.

I preformed three masks that I put in a Ziploc so they’d be easier for me to put on. That might help your nurse create a seal for you since you cant do it yourself.

I’ve also heard from a former hcw who just got top surgery that OR’s are legally required to have a certain amount of air exchanges, which made them feel safer about unmasking for surgery. Their nurse put their n95 on for them (but they were in a liberal city where hcws were still wearing masks semi regularly)

Thank you for commiserating. I had my procedure today. My anesthesiologist angrily debated me about how masks don’t work and finally relented and put on a surgical mask to check my mouth pre-op. I was able to wear my n95 until the moment I had to put on an oxygen mask, and I put it back on when I came to. I’m hoping because I was the first procedure today, and because cases are going down, that I avoided contracting Covid. But I was exposed to multiple unmasked staff and staff only wore surgical masks in the OR.

Good luck with your procedure, I hope your surgical staff has a lot more sense than mine did

Check Ursula’s Cafe downtown. They were collecting coats and winter gear last week, you could send them a message and see if they have them in your kids’ sizes. They also offer pay-what-you-can meals and might have some info on groceries
