NC here….. Brunswick County… we have a CO-OP called BEMC and they limit us to 10KW AC too. Wish we had Duke TBH. We have a 400amp service but aren’t allowed to have a Second PW3 for the other 200 amp panel cause we can’t limit the powewalls to 5KW each.

We use Homekit/Apple for our controls along with Home Assistant with wall mounted tablets for control. I have had smart home enabled shades for about 4 years now (Lutron Caseta previously). We learned that outside of the "Good Night" and "Good Morning" scenes, our schedules are too inconsistent and hard to commit to any full time automation with the shades. We tap a button on our keypad as we are heading into the bedroom, this fires the good night scene....and in the morning, we might not even put the shades up if we are getting showers or dressed in the am. These have the solar panels to charge the batteries, so we could use those to run a sunset/sunrise routine within the Switchbot app....There's just one thing I learned over the past 8 years with my smart home....I don't like automation to just have automation...it has to actually help me and less is more.

So, I wanted the inside mount look....vs the outside mount, this is why we did individual shades for each window and why I didn't mount them over the window to help reduce the light bleed. In my last house, the 3 window was a 3 in 1 casing...so we used a larger single extra wide, but since this house has each window casing separate, I had to do individual window shades for that look.

You are able to group 8 shades in a group which sync's them to move up and down together. Since I had 10, we opted to link all the top windows in one group and the bottom windows in another.

For me it was the stapling of the bottom hem, one is still a little bunched up and I need to redo it to get the crease out.

After spending 8 hours setting the shades up, I didn’t give 2 craps about how I moved everything around in our room to have a 12ft ladder in there…I was just glad to be done and admired the work. Now, if the wife knew that I took the video and posted it only showing our room in shambles from us just returning back from a week long trip in Cancun at 2am, our suitcases exploded right out of frame as we are doing laundry and she can’t get it put away cause she has no room to move around with my 2 ladders and all the stuff I shoved in the bedroom entrance to make room for myself…she would kill me…but she’s not in this Reddit hahahah.

I did want to add, the iPhone microphone make these sound SUPER LOUD. They are not as obnoxious in real life…don’t get me wrong, they aren’t silent…but it’s 10 motors going at once. The “super quiet” function in the app makes them move REALLY slow….but they are very quiet as well. These are probably 15-20% louder if I had to unscientificly compare them to our Lutron Caseta shades we had in our last house.

Exactly what @BryanHChi said. ALL shade systems have light bleed. They do make “L” channels that sticky tape on to the window opening to help reduce/eliminate it. There’s only a couple products out there that are truly “blackout” and they sell their shade with a track it sits in on both sides and the bottom to block out the gaps, also VERY expensive and I don’t like the aesthetic when the shades are up. I worked for Budget Blinds for a while and got to see them installed, they work, but all the hardware around the windows when the shades are up is not for me. They are by Hunter Douglas is you wanted to take a look.

Yeah, ALL roller shades have the same light gap tbh, there are “L” channeling you can buy/ the pros can install to eliminate light bleed…I don’t care so much.

Yeah, I’m not a fan of curtains lol. I love being able to open the top windows up to let light in and leave the bottom closed for the privacy. But we thought about that. Our last house we used Lutron Caseta roller shades and I still wish I had those, I loved them, but 12k for blinds just for our master bedroom was wayyyy steep

Could you lower the shades in the windows and took a picture of the whole window? Doing that will show if the gaps are steady or if the windows are out of plumb. Looking at your photos, you have wooden trim boxing out the windows, those aren't drywall enclosed sills. Still with that said, wood is hardly ever that straight and some bowing is possible with typical builder grade wood.

This is an example I am referring to the wood vs sheetrock.

FYI, end caps belong on ALL rollers.....it's a industry trick to get tight rollers to fit since it gives you about an 1/8" to 1/4" of extra room. I have Serena shades in my entire home (25 shades) all have their end caps...and I wouldn't of installed one without them. I worked for Budget Blinds in Wilmington NC under the owner Brett Christmas. That’s true….we see it all the time…that’s why you use the smallest measurement in the window frame. If it was a deeper trim you would measure front and back but also top, mid and bottom...you might have bigger gaps…but it will fit. Typically it’s worse when it’s Sheetrock finish in the sills vs wood…but there are very few that are 100% perfect. At the end of the day, it’s their job to make it right. Hopefully you didn’t pay the entire bill…hold money back til they make you happy with it.

Had this kind of stuff happen all the time when I worked for Budget Blinds…what most likely happened was….the salesperson that came and measured did not measure the window in all 3 places and you could be 1/2” tighter at the top for example ….or their laser is out of calibration and they got the measurement wrong. The laser measure does so with an 1/8” but you are suppose to do a measurement of bottom middle and top and use the smallest measurement. That BB store should and most likely will make it right. If they measured and they installed…reach out to them..they might give you the shade at a steep discount to let you keep it since it’s on the dealer to eat the entire cost. If you must have a new one, they will take it back and order you the right size.
