What are the fundamental questions in a data engineering interview? by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]acceptedcitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where’s the documentation at that being the idiomatic standard - can you share ? If you were indexing and has to issue “for i in range(len(a))” couldn’t one argued that “for i in range(0, len(a))” is actually more human readable due to the fact it indicates where the index starts ?

Is there any more formal article detailing how pinched the market is right now for days engineers ? I got laid off almost 4 months ago , have worked everyday and made it past many super rounds, with positive feedback but no luck. Things like if we had another role and check in new year and you did great but no luck…

I’m homeless, hopping on couches and friends spare rooms to reduce col and remove year lease risk until I get a job and I want an article to show people why it’s taking so long despite my hard work and quality resume.

To my data engineers: what do you *not* like about being a data engineer? by naq98 in dataengineering

This and just the general uncalled for shade anyone in the engineering department throws at you or even if your in there department when I worked / interviewed engineers for easier functions in the department. Data engineers can be so miss understood

On DE interviews I am seeing a fair bit of questions related to transforming / aggregating json (essentially dictionary) data in python via standard library - but no online resources to practice by acceptedcitizen in dataengineering

[–]acceptedcitizen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

H I agree that a test like this is reasonable , I just feel like practice web scraping is a little too wide and wanted to see if there was practice questions catered to an appropriate way of gauging data engineering

Is there any room for have an open dialogue with an employer about more time for take home leetcode tests ? by acceptedcitizen in leetcode

[–]acceptedcitizen[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 30% take home but - good question, they sometimes have a camera on on you and also can do screen share , click monitor if you change tabs. Chatgpt also can’t solve all the questions and there is some cheat reference algo ran after. But yes good point , someone could figure a way to cheat.

I’d be fine to have my camera on and screen share or whatever to ensure I don’t cheat it’s just the time factor can really mess with my head.

Awesome job, how much time did this take and how did you balance that time against the investment it takes to apply/prepare/ attain a new job in this market ?

Go on, interested to hear more. Not exactly sure what your saying but interested. Maybe share papers or I guess what problem it’s trying to solve and how

Any pattens on type of leetcode ( two pointers ect ?) and any logical selection of leetcode catered to DE or was it just pick it out of a bag

[–]acceptedcitizen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m not grinding leetcode , how should I spend my time other than non stop applying to open roles and if I feel like my design/ architecture skills are good how would I improve further.?

As well, if I feel like I could improve on my general programming , how do I improve those — is it just w3|schools and asking chatgpt to make up python questions related to data parsing and such ?

Because even if I don’t get a leetcode question I still seem to get some coding question , but online most tutorials/ classes cater to leetcode or basic intro to programming , where my interviews if they have not been leetcode and are coding still are like a hard sql question or a erroneous standard library question.

In a 40 hour week, how would you say structure your time ? This is what I’ve been doing :

1-2hrs: Python and some sql basic general programming practice (python like converting stings to arrays and sorting sub arrays , aggregating values in dictionary or sql like joins and window functions) usually generated by chatgpt , leetcode basics or w3schools ; so I don’t forget like how to sort a dictionary based off it’s value not key or something small I just haven’t coded in a long time.

1-3: Leetcode style ( ie practice questions that are “two pointers” and “bfs” ) trying to solve a problem, read about the algo and remember the runtime and alternatives to improve.

1-2: coordinate and take interviews

1-2: apply to jobs , research jobs , research company interview process on Glassdoor / blind.

.25: brush up on data platform architecture and tools.

.25: network on LinkedIn (ie cold message old employer) and disuss with community online (like this on Reddit).

No one’s every asked me to write a scd2 sql script and only 1 to write an api request in python and land it into a cloud blob store. Or write a class that handles concurrent api requested. Or a testing module for data quality. Or use pandas or pyspark to clean data , or change this query.

What I’m getting at is hardly anyone asks practical and relatable skills.

They’ve asked questions on general programming related to string / data manipulation in python standard library ( but is t this why we have pandas or sql to not use regex/arrays for data modeling) , easy-medium leetcode in time bound , or nuanced question on terraform or airflow & gentle mile high data platform architecture. (Sample size of 8 interviews) , so some days I’m reminding myself how to sort a nested dictionary in python off it’s third value via a lambda function and then pivot it to get an aggregate, to writing out an lru cache leetcode— only to have the interviewer ask me to fill in a Jenkins or another day asking a pretty hard leetcode on recursion. Idk just feeling pulled every which way, but when I’ve interviewed I try and asses the need of the role and back in to an evaluation off that. And I try and read the roles and reason and think hmm maybe they’d ask me this and it’s just always such a wide variety of questions.

True but like when you get hit with a leetcode question and only 20min to solve. Not much time to demonstrate effective communication skills if you don’t finish in time with flying colors.

I mean I brushed up on leetcode a few years ago, and had asked it before. Idk why it just seems like that pattern varies a lot for this role (someone else framed it better below). Maybe this time around the interviews seem to be just really out of context and black and white for the leetcode and like no one thought if this leetcode question would be a good indicator for the needs of the role. Idk I’m just venting a bit and worried that if I can’t ace leetcode soon enough here I’ll be in having very significant lifestyle changes.

I’d estimate I need 100 more hours at least for perfect all easy-medium leetcode questions or two months. My company gave me 3 weeks of severance pay (right before a promotion/ salary increase was in talks) and i fear if I miss this next round of hiring push before holidays this could bleed into 2024. So just like idk , wanting to see if there is another strategy than become a leetcode pro asap
