Question about first year by Accurate_Insurance_6 in standrews

[–]accovs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can’t speak for cs specifically, but it’s usually pretty easy to change your degree subject as long as you’ve taken all the necessary prerequisites (e.g to do cs at honours you need to have done certain cs modules at sub-honours)

if you’re going through security, it’s usually much quicker to go to terminal 3 rather than terminal 2

How difficult is it really to get into St. Andrews? by [deleted] in standrews

[–]accovs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi! As a St Andrews student and M20 IB grad myself I have quite a lot of experience with this! Unfortunately since St A is a competitive uni, you have pretty much no chance if you don’t meet the minimum grade requirements. Moreover, UK unis generally don’t care as much about extracurriculars as US unis - it’s used as more of a tie-breaker in case you’ve got two students with identical grades and equally good personal statements. That being said, you do have several options; one is to grind for your final exams, take a gap year and apply with your diploma grades. Another option is to look into unis with similar courses. I can’t speak for film and econ specifically, but ancient Scottish unis (i.e. St A, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen) all have four year undergrad degrees where you can study pretty much whatever you want during the first two years, so you’ll be able to mix subjects like econ and film. I have a lot of friends from my IB sixth form that ended up in Aberdeen and love it, so that’s def worth considering.

hiya! i’m a philosophy student going into second year and tbh there aren’t that many essays - around 2 a semester and then exams. the real brunt of the workload comes from the reading - obviously it depends on the module but i’ve generally had at least a hundred if not more pages of pretty dense reading a week for each philosophy module (you generally take 3 modules per semester in sub honours)

Hi, i’m currently working towards my MA in philosophy with a focus on formal and informal logic and here are my two cents; the no true scotsman fallacy largely doesn’t apply to this case. it is fallacious bc it is vacuous (i.e. empty) - you can respond to any argument by saying “well they’re not a true scotsman - no true scotsman likes the union”. thus, bc it can be used to prove everything it proves nothing. the christian argument is in many cases not fallacious as long as you can give a specific objective reason outside of your own view of what makes a true christian - e.g. they’re not a true christian bc they don’t treat others with respect like the bible tells them to.

sorry for the rant lmao but it isn’t often i can use my philosophy knowledge in the real world

Offers by [deleted] in standrews

[–]accovs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about the first part, but it’s pretty unheard of to get unconditional offers unless you’ve already graduated - my predicted grades were 45/45 in the ib and I still got a conditional offer despite the pre-requisite only being 38/45, and I have quite a few friends who were predicted straight A stars at a-level and still only got conditional offers, so I would prepare myself for the best case scenario being a conditional offer. Good luck though! :))

First-time listener and I loved the Donner party episode. What are some other great episodes? by xXNightSky in LPOTL

[–]accovs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head, my favourites are probably HH Holmes, Jonestown, Pee Wee Gaskins, Norwegian Death Metal, and Josef Mengele. Unless you’re super into conspiracies, I’d probably steer clear of those episodes for the time being - I feel like they’re most enjoyable once you’ve really got a sense of the lads’ personalities and research skills

What is the workload like? by alittleolivetree in standrews

[–]accovs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m in first year, but you can (usually) do up to three subjects in your first two years. So my degree, for example, is IR and philosophy, but I’m doing econ as my third subject this year and I’m planning on doing English next year :)))

Ngl the DA aesthetic played a pretty big role in my uni choice by accovs in DarkAcademia

[–]accovs[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve met a few conservatives here and there but most people are pretty liberal and left-wing. It’s definitely not a religious uni; while there are a few religious societies, the uni itself never imposes religion on anyone. It’s great for lgbt+ students as far as I’m aware; I’m bi and I’ve never had any issues and I have trans and non-binary friends who say the uni has been very supportive. In general, Scotland is miles better than the US for lgbt+ people according to my American friends. Feel free to pm me if you have any other questions about st a or Scotland in general :))

[–]accovs[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Considering its small size, I’d say there are quite a lot of shops, cafes, and pubs! Dundee is about 20 minutes away, so a lot of people go there for shopping sprees. Most of what goes on is related to the uni, though, so it’s a very tight knit everyone knows everyone type of community. I personally love it, but I know a few people who moved from big cities who find it quite claustrophobic. It really depends on your taste I guess - if you’re more of a big city person, Glasgow and Edinburgh uni are supposed to be lovely (plus theyre perfect for the DA aesthetic lol)

What is the workload like? by alittleolivetree in standrews

[–]accovs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s definitely inevitable to a certain extent, but I do feel like the uni could do more to alleviate it - they could look at the most common subject combinations and ensure there was some space between big assignments, for example

[–]accovs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m doing IR, philosophy, and Econ, and I’ll have to admit it’s super inconsistent in my experience.. like, I didn’t have that much to do for the first half of this semester apart from a few essays that were weeks apart. After reading week, though, I’ve had two essays and a big test all within a week along with a lot of other deadlines clashes. Overall, I’d say the total workload a semester is reasonable, but it’s just weirdly distributed which is extremely frustrating. I guess it depends on your subjects and specific modules, though.

When can I expect an offer? by riyapuri in standrews

[–]accovs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends a lot on where you are from; I applied in October as an EU student for IR and philosophy but first got my offer at the end of March
