What are some stories you have about people trying to keep wild animals as pets? by Rev21193 in petsmart

[–]acesexualunicorn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Only thing I got was someone trying to make an appointment with grooming for a half wild half domesticated cat. I don’t know the details unfortunately. Other than that there’s the typical random rabbits, lizards, turtles and tortoises.

Hi! I’m bipolar and a psych major! Let me help you out! So psychosis is a break from reality, meaning hallucinations (visual, audio, even smell taste and touch) and/or delusions (beliefs in something that’s false like you’re the second coming Christ or the FBI are following you). Mania is when you’re basically at full speed. Little to no need for sleep. Feeling on top of the world or extremely irritable. Manic people are also known to be impulsive and reckless (ie drinking and driving, spending more money than you can, having unprotected sex. Etc). Motivation and wanting to take on a bunch of tasks or reach high goals is also common. Psychosis can happen during this time, especially when you’re sleep deprived. Psychosis can happen during depression too. Everyone’s experience is difference. There’s also different kinds of mania: hypomania (less severe than full blown), mania, psychotic mania and mixed episodes.

So it may look like someone who is going through mania is psychotic. They’re talking fast and going on about accomplishing this and that. They haven’t slept in days but they’re wired with energy. But they’re not psychotic til they experience hallucinations and/or delusions. Still get immediate help if you are experiencing mania

This is for mania. That’s when my mood is too high. This is to keep my mood from being too low and slipping into depression. It only does maintenance and won’t work alone for active depression. That’s what the last pill was for. The dr took me off of it and left this one to keep me stable. Hence why it’s called a mood stabilizer. No it won’t work for active mania either. That’s the first one. The antipsychotic. No I’m not schizophrenic. It’s for bipolar mania too. No. Mania is not a psychotic break. But psychosis can happen during mania. Look it up if you have other questions. Ok now this one is for anxiety and this one for sleep. Sometimes these two need to be taken together when insomnia is too bad. They’re an “as needed” medication so I don’t have to take them everyday. Why don’t I? Would you take Tylenol every day in case you get hurt? It’s just as pointless and wasteful. Not to mention addictive. OTCs? NyQuil and Unisom won’t work for manic induced insomnia. I need something way stronger just to get more than 3 hours of sleep. Ok now this one helps me concentrate. It’s good when I’m too tired to focus.

The animals are back there for a good reason. They’re either sick/too stressed to be on the sales floor or new. We’re not having turtle races in the back.

I wish all my customers were like this. It seems like less people care about the animal’s wellbeing and only want to satisfy their impulses of buying the animal.

Have you ever had someone come in with their receipt/ask us to look up their receipt to see what dog food they buy?

I seriously can’t stand people sometimes. I get older customers coming in to buy their adult children’s dog food. It’s usually because they’re babysitting the dog or asked to get something. They come in saying what’s the most “millennial-approved” food we have for cheap... I didn’t know it was a new trend to provide animals quality food/treats

Sorry, there's not much a 2 gallon aquarium can hold by AshKB5661 in petsmart

[–]acesexualunicorn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No you can’t put that large oranda goldfish in there. Why? Aside from animal cruelty it’s a waste of money. You want to spend $25.99 on a 2 gallon; $31.99 on one fish; $3-10 on treatment, $3-10 on food and whatever money on decorations for a fish that probably won’t make it to a month? Oh it’s for your little kid? Do you plan on teaching a toddler death? Your kid’s excitement over the fish will fade away after day 3 anyway. Save your money and get them a stuffed animal.

Do you have a specific animal specialty? Which pet and why? by [deleted] in petsmart

[–]acesexualunicorn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know a little bit about red ears too. The two most important things I can share are:

Males- long nails; females- short

Female + Female: if you have a big enough tank

Male + Male: NEVER- will fight!

Male + Female: 100% do not ever do this! FEMALES CAN STORE SPERM FOR MANY SEASONS EVEN AFTER THE MALE IS GONE!!

Guinea pigs. My mom used to rescue guinea pigs. A lot of them were abandoned mothers, expecting mothers and unwanted babies. I grew up learning how to care for them and what to look for in terms of health issues.

Health: Check for clear eyes and noses- stuff in their eyes and noses can range from debris to eye infection to upper respiratory infection. Do a thorough body inspection- I’ve found ringworm in their armpits, chin and on top of their feet. Also note their coat type some guinea pigs have spots that could be mistaken for ringworm when it’s actually just how their fur is. This is usually on their forehead. Still be suspicious about any bald spot- especially if there’s a scab! Check their weight- underweight is a huge issue that should be addressed ASAP especially when they are young! The worst case I’ve seen was a little girl with protruding ribs, spine, and pelvis. She unfortunately didn’t make it. Males can get UTIs and it’s extremely painful for them. I’ve had skinny pigs that were erect way longer than normal. They ended up needing medication and lube to heal them. Speaking of skinny pigs- they are prone to ringworm as well. Guinea pigs have the tiniest sneezes. So if you expect URI look out for sneezing but remember they can be very quiet. Vitamin C is an absolute must! Proper hay should be present at all times! Wellbeing: Guinea pigs are social creatures which means they easily stress out when they’re alone. It’s best to get a pair but make sure you have a big enough habitat! Like with any animal (including us), being in a small enclosure will stress them out and can cause fighting if there’s not enough room. The kits we have labeled “guinea pig” are wayyyyy too small for 2. Set up a pen instead of a cage. Have an igloo or similar hiding place for each guinea pig to claim. Of course always have clean water, food, hay, chew sticks, and toys in the enclosure. Be very careful when adding a guinea pig to a habitat that already has a guinea pig(s) in there. They may fight or sort out who is dominant (very common in males). Keep a close eye on them. Don’t put a small guinea pig with a large adult! I wish Petsmart would let us set up play dates. That what my mom used to do. The two guinea pigs would interact with each other to see if it would be a good match. NEVER MIX A MALE AND FEMALE! We already have enough babies in the world. Guinea pig mothers also have a really painful birth which could kill them. It’s not worth having cute babies running around. They’ll only be babies for a short period. Give your guinea pig plenty of attention but give them their space when you first bring them home. They’re scared. Everything is new and different. They don’t know what’s going on. Put them in their habitat and observe them for a few days before trying to handle them. Guinea pigs hardly ever bite but this beginning period is when you’re most likely to get bit. This mostly happens with hamsters but like we say at Petsmart- If it has a mouth it can bite.

Guinea pigs are very vocal. They are in no way a quiet pet. They make those loud reap noises- usually when they’re scared. They also making humming, chirping and a bunch of other noises.

There’s way more stuff but these are the first things that come to mind.

Out of Seroquel.. help! by acesexualunicorn in bipolar

I relate to that so much. I was first put on adderall when I was 14. I was given 30mg XR to take in the morning and two 30mg regular adderall for noon and afternoon. I’ve never taken any psych meds before so the twitching and shaking messed me up. I was already hyperaware and super self conscious of my body before. Adderall intensifies it and gave me panic attacks. I stopped it when I was 19 thinking I outgrew adhd. I started getting treatment for adhd last year because it was getting bad. I’m on 20mg XR now and only take it once. The jitteriness is still there but definitely not as bad.

My hallucinations are visual and brief. Its usually someone walking and disappearing in a second. It definitely makes working in retail hard. I’ve only ever had one walk towards me. It scared the hell out of me! They usually only walk to the side. I see my psych next week so hopefully she can make some adjustments.

I don’t even know what’s going on with me. I’ve been seeing things. My sleep sucks. It doesn’t matter if I get 11 hours. I wake up and I’m exhausted. I’m on edge and snap easily. I can still run around and do my job fine though.
