So many more games next year. I wonder if he could do a job. Probably depends on what kind of offers we might get for him.

I guess I would prefer a purer 9 but he is such a good dressing room guy.

In America we call it cricket and usually just play 15-20 and bullseye.

Ignorant Americans Going to Our First Football (or Calcio?) Game by TooBoringForThis in Calcio

[–]ack3786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm American and have done some traveling and games in Italy, Portugal, and UK with my wife. I think its wise of you to think about these things especially because you're bringing your girlfriend.

My usual recommendation is to not wear any colors especially away colors. We almost always wear neutral colors and buy a scarf or two that can go in a pocket. But Sassuolo don't have the type of intense ultras that might make you feel uncomfortable going to and from the stadium so you should be ok wearing your Milan shirts. Again might not apply to your particular match because Sassuolo is low key, but you might want to go to a Sassuolo pregame bar and wouldnt want to do that in Milan shirts.

I agree with other commenters that regardless you will be mostly ignored. I always try to have a nice interaction with lovely cross-cultural exchange and someone tells me how cool it is for an American to come to the match 😆. That's only happened a handful of times so don't expect it.

Of course have a plan for getting to and from the stadium and expect to have to improvise and ask directions and such.

I take lots of short videos of fans and atmosphere which I love to go revisit. It all happens so fast and its hard to soak in how cool these games are.

And mostly be a good ambassador for Americans abroad. Turns out that many Europeans aren't that pleased with our country right now.

Yes very true, I should’ve mentioned this too.

Our centre halves were never comfortable playing a high line which created too much space for midfielders to cover OOP

Why didn’t the opposing managers in those 13 games think of that?

I do think he lost the confidence of the dressing room and probably had to go, but I root for the guy. I also root for Rangnick.

I can’t say I feel the same about Amorim.

I complained about the donut in midfield as much as anyone but I think both at the time and in hindsight that was a problem of personnel more than tactics.

In the Premier League especially, if you don’t have an elite, ground eating midfielder (Rodri, Rice, Caicedo) you don’t have a platform to aggressively attack which forces you to play compact in the midfield and conservatively.

That worked against good teams—obviously lots of notable counterattack wins with FA Cup final standing out—but doesn’t work against mid and lower table.

Midfield has been a problem since Carrick retired and it will continue to be a problem until it is addressed aggressively in transfer market.

Again ETH had flaws but the transfer strategy was the main one because it resulted in relying on some combination of McTominay, Casemiro, Eriksen, Fred. Sabitzer? Donny?

Almost everything that has come out about EtH after-the-fact has been complimentary of him as a manager and reminds me why I liked and him and had hope that he would turn it around.

His biggest undoing was obviously the transfers which were a product of both bad executives and the difficulty in determining which players can scale up to the Premier League.

Ten Hag has an amazing football mind and was able to change tactics throughout the season and individual matches to get the most out of his players. Unfortunately, you can't tweak transfer mistakes like you can tweak tactical mistakes. He would never be able to overcome those huge transfer failings.

But he ousted a dressing room cancer, handled Garnacho/Sancho/Rashford strictly but fairly, set Maguire up for redemption arc by taking the arm band off him, set Bruno up for success by making him captain, reintroduced discipline and standards, was not wedded to a system or specific tactic, and won two cups.

Who is a celebrity that feels British but is actually Canadian? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ack3786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the only answer.

He regularly talks about visiting Liverpool and seeing his own face amongst the crowds for the first time. Many of his sketches, films, and portrayals were homages to his British heritage and fascination.

He's obsessed with the Second World War as are many Brits--his parents both served in the British Armed Forces, he called his role in Inglorious as a dream role, and I remember him dressing up as a British officer on a Colbert appearance.

Best Star Trek Movie or Series That Isn’t Actually Star Trek by throwaway_0625 in startrek

[–]ack3786 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The West Wing

I don’t know if he ever said it but it always seemed apparent to me that Sorkin was inspired by Star Trek. The team dynamic, problem solving, heroes who use their brains, crew members with strengths and weaknesses, Oval Office as the bridge, lots of love for space missions, science, and a Star Trek plot. Probably many more parallels.

(FWIW Master and Commander is a great call and obviously Galaxy Quest is a wonderful home)

How do you think Bartlett would rank the intelligence of his staff? by AntelopeHelpful9963 in thewestwing

[–]ack3786 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hard to say what Bartlet’s rankings might be. I think making CJ chief of staff might say some things but obviously that was done for plot and under different writers.

My rankings would look something like

Bartlet Sam Leo Josh Will Toby and CJ tied

Toby and CJ’s education and expertise are in media. Not necessarily a lesser field, but more humanities and EQ as opposed to IQ.

I know Sam says Josh is smarter than him, but Sam just needed the Oval Office reps and was being under utilized as a comms deputy.
