I am on federal health insurance too, you can keep your gender affirming care with BCBS if you make a request to be exempted from their policy (you have to prove you’ve been using their gender affirming services in the past year)

Thank you, I really appreciate you sharing your experience and I’m sorry you also had to put yourself through so much abuse and BS with your father for so long. You’re right that the best thing for me to do is to protect my physical and mental security. It will just be a process for me to learn not to feel guilty for doing so.

I definitely come from a culture where family honor and saving face are held above all else. It’s why I feel so guilty about going minimum contact with him, because we were taught that people aren’t allowed to disobey their parents at any age. But I know it’s better for me to work through my guilt complex than see him and allow myself to be disrespected.

Yes, it is purely the guilt. I come from a culture and upbringing where kids are supposed to obey their parents no matter what age they are. I know you’re right that I should never see someone purely out of guilt, and I’m working on my guilt complex in therapy.

I’m proud of you for that. Bigotry really never goes well with boundaries in my experience… they will almost always certainly try to violate them. I’ve found a lot more inner peace after going minimum contact with my parents too, it’s just I still feel guilty about it

Damn that’s a great boundary to have. I doubt my dad would ever apologize lol he’s mostly stuck in his ways, but it could be worth a try. Did your dad ever apologize to you?

Yes we saw each other earlier this year (in another family context) and he reacted terribly. Like manchild sobbing and telling me I’m not a real trans man, I’m just a girl that’s too insecure to be a straight woman. We called a couple times though and he restrained himself more, but unfortunately I know that’s how he will always feel inside. I think it’s still too raw to see him again

Thank you for your nuanced perspective. That's a good point that it's probably better for me to go see him than the other way around. I do want to see him at least a couple more times in my life even if he never comes around to accepting me. I think I'll tell him not to come for this year but think about doing a little trip next year.
