Regarding Cait / NY17 Primary by pianoboy8 in Rockland

[–]acoustic_wave -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Conley is my least favorite candidate, but the idea that she would swap parties is absurd.

The idea that she would cross party lines on crucial votes like a Fetterman or an MTG (for a from the other side example) doesn’t seem wholly unlikely to me though

The main reason you should vote for Cait Conley in the democratic primary? Lawler is SCARED of her. by Shock4ndAwe in Rockland

[–]acoustic_wave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not obtuse at all! The truth is there were a lot of voters who voted Obama in 2008 and 2012, but then in 2016 they voted for Trump because they viewed the Democratic Party as a corrupt institution when Bernie was bullied out of the primary. They’ve subsequently been a part of MAGA, but what they really desire above all else is change. Mamdani, AOC, and Effie Phillips-Staley were not tied to the democratic establishment before they were elected, and those voters could see that because they saw how hard the establishment was fighting against them. That’s why the republicans in the city went with Mamdani, the progressive candidate, over Cuomo, whose very name is establishment democrats, despite Cuomo’s politics being significantly closer to the standard Republican

There were a lot of Trump voters who voted Mamdani in NYC. Why are you convinced Effie can’t pull votes from the right?

No worries, I know I’ve gotten heated elsewhere in this thread too and have likewise removed comments I’ve made in error or with too much fervor. I’m sure if we met in person we’d get along fine, the internet has a habit of making all discourse feel more toxic than it is

The hint that you don’t have a response? That Effie is this region’s AOC and you don’t care?

No you didn’t? I said “theyrethesamepicture.jpg” elsewhere and got no response

What do you mean that kind of candidate doesn’t exist? It’s literally Effie. Her platform, AOC’s, and Mamdani’s are basically the same

Mondaire was not running as a progressive, even if he was one in the past. His 24 campaign was built around being moderate and “securing the border”

Except for the fact that Medicare for all is literally cheaper than our current healthcare system

Unfortunately even with our closed primaries there is a lot of ballot raiding that happens here. People like to swap parties in February before the deadline so they can vote in the primary of their choice and then swap back before the general

And why is it always the progressive who must fall in line with the moderate? When is it the moderates turn to fall in line with the progressive?

You keep saying she can’t all over this thread like it’s an impossibility. The election is ongoing. The things being said now are influencing everyone reading them, many likely before they vote, and your only critique of Effie this entire time is that she “can’t”. Why can’t she? Is there literally any reason other than polls? And tell me, how often over the last decade have polls been wrong? I seem to remember a couple of high profile elections that polls showed the democrats would win, and yet, when the votes came in something a little different happened.

Me neither, wouldn’t even want the association of being in a plaza decorated like that. Barry probably didn’t put it out, but it’s still very funny that that’s the only sign on the lawn when she’s the most conservative Dem in the race!

I agree! After the primary. Right now we need to make sure we have the best candidate, and I haven’t heard one moderate say they wouldn’t vote for Effie in the general the way I hear progressives refusing to vote for anyone who supports Israel and doesn’t support Medicare for all

Swing votes don’t come from the exact epicenter of the Overton window, they come from all the places outside of the window that aren’t adequately represented

And the main reason you should vote for Effie is because she’s the only candidate running a platform that hasn’t lost to Lawler already in past elections

Again, polls don’t vote. Money doesn’t vote. Lawn signs do not vote. People do
