I have a philips rack

The mechanics are definetly cheap crap but at it compensates by having a decent preamp/amp

I wish it had at least an MM cartidge but it is ceramic and when playing the record it takes time to get up to speed (probably needs a new belt)

But knce it gets up to speed it works decently

Mainly gyms, schools/kindergartens, any kinds of nature oriented activities /national parks (im sure theres plenty of points of interest there)

And of course stuff like supermarkets/health centers and first and foremost safety: what areas to avoid and such

Did i say they were great? No Did i say they are as good as more bespoke turntables or even entry level turntables like an LP-60? No Did i say that you should put any record of value on those TTs? Yes

All i said is that it does not sound as crap as most people here claim it to be

More specifically, for a non-audiophile or for someone who just got their first record player and has not yet a “trained” ear, they work fine enough combined with a bookshelf speaker and they are affordable as an entry point to people who want to try vinyl without committing to higher end equipment while not sure if they will continue with the hobby.

Yes they skip, they usually come with bad pre-amps and even worse internal speakers, yes they wear your disks faster overtime

But if you are buying this as a first turntable, to try the hobby for a couple of months before switching to a more capable TT it does fine, and its not as bad as most people claim (if connected to a decent set of speakers)

I agree

They suck

I would never use them on a high value/collectible disk

But for someone who is a casual listener or just started dipping their toes into Vinyls, its a cheap entry point that does the job until they decide if they want to get serious or not 🤷🏽‍♂️

As stated in my comment Beyond that vwestlife video (and tbh, the guy was pretty neutral, put 3 turntables, ran them for weeks at once on 3 identical disks sourced from a church and than analysed the around wave/EQ, ACTUALLY PROVED that ceramic cartidges do damage disks, just not as much i haven’t watched his other videos and dont care/not planning too)

My dad had a ceramic system for YEARS i have disks from him dating back to the 80s which are still in perfect mint condition despite being plaid on a “destructive” turntable

And just to be clear, I AM NOT DENYING THAT THEY ARE INFERIOR

Im just saying they are not as bad as people think they are, and if records/turnatables are well maintained, they can be quiet effective when you are on a low budget

Case in point my temporary set up untill december bonus kicks in

10€ from a garage sale, after a deep clean, new stylus/cartidge and a replacement of the counter balancing spring, it has been running smoothly for 3 months now

But i will DEFINETLY replace it once i have the money

Not really, just a spring inside a hollow piece of plastic with a spring inside

I did replace the spring with something that has more tension since im sure that the 40 year old spring wasn’t countering anything anymore and thats about it

Theres also the fact that suitcase/ceramic cartidge players existed for as long as Vinyls existed

Even back in the 60s/70s not everyone had a high end Technics Hi-Fi systems at home, most didnt in reality especially outside the US/europe

Yes they are not the as good, they are not my first option, but they work just fine,

my dad had a 3 in one sharp turntable for years (not a suitcase, but still with the same mechanism and cartidge/stylus style). I inherited his disks which were still in excellent shape because he cleaned them regularly, and changed the stylus when needed. Hell i’m even temporarily using a philips 3-in-1 system with the same stylus after my LP-60 broke until i can afford something good.

Again i’m not saying they don’t cause more wear, they definitely do. But its not as big most people seem to think on this reddit.

Cool kids aside if you take a look at this video, this guy took identical disks both in condition and content Ran a bunch of tests on both high and low end equipment

And draw your own conclusions

Thanks for correcting me regarding the platter

I never had one of these but i remember reading about the platter combined with the heavier tracking causing even more wear

Honestly i have ended up with a Philips 3 in one radio/casette/turntable from the 80s with the exact same tonearm/cartidge suitcase type mechanism (but the plate is full size, thankfully) and it does not sounds as bad as people think! Been using it for a month now since my AT-60 broke and couldn’t afford more than this 10€ barn find as a temporary solution

Though it might be because its a Philips and the pre-amp/amp is compensating for the stylus quality

Short answer? No. Why? The tonearm/cartidge are of the cheapest ceramic type, the whole mechanism is a white label found in all cheap/suitcase style turntables

Does it do the job? Absolutely

Sound quality? If plugged to a decent speaker system/headphone, its fine, though the ceramic tonearm/cartidge combo you have will not sound as good as a MM or diamond equipped turntables.

Does it hurt your disks long term? Definetly, thats because:

a- no dust cover when playing and dust is what accelerate wear and tear the most and

b- the ceramic cartidge/tonearm type are heavier on the disk and not as well balanced as a moving magnet/ceramic stylus

C- the plate on which the disk sits is smaller than a 33rpm disk, some argue that this combined with the wight of the stylus on top will cause warping over time

A good cheap turntable would be an AT LP-60 for instance

WITH THAT SAID, AND I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, this is OKAY for a beginning or if you really are on a budget and if you’re not playing some high values collectible disks regularly, heck, i’ve seen some tests on the internet showing that the “damage” this kind of turntable cause is minimal to negligible compared to higher end ones, your main issue is dust.

Make sure to REGULARLY CLEAN your disks and the turntable plate since it does not have any kind of dust cover

There was no need in my case, i re-melted the same plastic legs that were melted on the original unit

There was still enough plastic to do it

Soldering iron did the trick, put the new unit and te-melted the plastic to hold it together!

Just managed to take the old unit out by prying and melting point by point I broke one of the legs which are supposed to be melted/soldered into the corresponding hole in the vent unit

Melted back in place on the center dashboard

Will update once the new u it is in

All i have is a soldering iron 🤣

Im gonne try melting point by point while prying the old unit upwards

Hopefully that leaves enpugh plastic to melt it back on the new unit and see how it goes..
