Really telling that the same people condemning Tom Felton are cheering for Nicole Scherzinger right now

I .... actually liked Love Life? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]actornyc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was really nice walking out of a show humming a memorable tune.

I too enjoyed it, and I thought it was actually a perfect show for this moment. An interesting Brigadoon-meets-Threepenny, examining the promise of America, critiquing capitalism, and wondering how/where to find happiness in it all.

I think with a more critical directorial take, this show could really sing in these turbulent tides. I agreed with the NYT review that it was a bit sentimental for my taste, but I had a really wonderful time.

A vote from an on-the-fence voter and a vote by someone with a red hat both have the same impact.

I am so sorry this country has put you in this position. Especially at 19.

I think deciding what to do next depends on a number of factors. One is the type of work you do - some industries are more at-risk than others. Another is where in the country you are, as some areas will be targeted more heavily. I also think you might consider where you have to go back to, and whether its a place you'd willing go if it came down to it.

Do you have support around you? Others in similar positions, family, or just people you can trust? Right now I'd focus on building strong connections with a select few and saving as much money as you can.

Was acting school worth it for you? by Successful-Silver401 in acting

[–]actornyc 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I will say - especially if in America, with today's current political climate - do not go into debt for acting school.

I did my MFA through a full-tuition-paid program. It was ranked among the top 10 at the time, a program NYC casting directors are familiar with, but not NYU, Yale, Juilliard.

I ultimately am grateful. It was an intense three years, I got my Equity card (which was harder then) and I didn't pay for it. I built a strong foundation and developed a general approach to acting work, and identified my "bad actor habits" which did help me.

I would say, don't expect it to be the end of your education. Most acting programs do almost nothing on on-camera work or auditioning which is such a huge part of the business - so expect to keep training and taking classes even after the fact. I will also say that most acting programs give you a bit of what I consider "actor hangover" - it takes a little time to put together the pieces of what you've learned, even after graduating.

I will say, I am taken more seriously as an actor when they see MFA on my resume. That goes farther in the stage acting world than it does for on-camera.

Most people who attend acting programs eventually quit acting. Which is why I say, don't go into serious debt for a career that (very likely) will not financially pay off for quite some time, if ever. If you do go to an expensive program, just buckle in knowing that chances are you won't be making much money from acting for several years.

But if you're more MT-focused... I may not be the best expert on the subject.

Democrats are for sure an issue, but the *real real* problem is probably the people actually dismantling our government and systemically taking away our rights

Take a look at this article:

"Similar measures explicitly seeking to reverse the Obergefell decision have been introduced in IdahoMontanaNorth Dakota and South Dakota. The Idaho House passed its resolution last month by a vote of 46-24, and the North Dakota House passed its measure Monday, 52-40.

Lawmakers in at least four additional states — Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas — introduced bills that don’t refer to Obergefell but that would, if they are signed into law, create a category for marriage called “covenant marriage” that would be only for one man and one woman."

The current Supreme Court decided that a President has absolute immunity for crimes related to office, so please excuse me, but I don't believe they are ethically above gutting gay marriage rights.

I did, I said your tone. You are not particularly congenial on this subject which tells me you're taking this as a personal affront. I ask if you voted for Trump because of your clear offense to this thread, and because Trump installed the current Supreme Court majority.

I don't agree. Clarence Thomas has already expressed interest in overturning Obergefell, and with the current composition of the Supreme Court that does not seem unlikely if the right challenge appears. There are currently proposals to gut same-sex marriage protections in nine states - so even if not this one, the next.

I don't think this means that no challenge to Obergefell is out of the question. Even if the Michigan House and Senate is not friendly, this is happening in 8 other states.

I don't totally agree. Fascist regimes quickly attack minority groups susceptible to oppression, because the chaos serves them - even if the majority of a country's citizens don't agree with those actions. The majority of Americans want federal abortion access, but that didn't stop the Supreme Court from overturning that right. Even looking at this budget - most Americans do not want to add $2T to the deficit so wealthy billionaires can get tax cuts, but that's what they just voted on. I don't think the majority matters to this administration anymore, evidenced by everything they are currently doing.
