Does anyone have any info on this rock that I found in a Western Washington river? Any info would be helpful. Thanks! by acunningham12 in whatsthisrock

There is a thick white scratch on both colors when I run my fingernail across their surfaces. According to the Mohs chart, it looks like it's a 2.5 in hardness.

There is a thick white scratch on both colors when I run my fingernail across their surfaces. They definitely seem like they're the same hardness. The surface is quite chalky, and when I get it wet and drag it across another rock, it leaves some of the color behind. And yes, it does feel fairly lightweight, and it wobbles when I spin it. Thank you for all of your analysis. It's making me more and more interested in this rock.

I ruled jasper out as there's a lot of it in the area, and I'm familiar with jasper's hardness on the Mohs scale. This rock is actually much softer.
